The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Don't know why I never got round to clicking this thread, but glad I did. Amazing work guys. Wish there was still stuff left for me to contribute :(

I haven't found much unique/of interest on my trip thus far, but I'm just a few hundred LY now from NGC 281 (colloquially known as the "Pacman Nebula"), I don't think it's been mentioned. It's about 9,200LY from Sol on the Perseus Arm, not too far from the Heart and Soul nebulae, but VERY low (> 800LY) beneath the galactic plane. I haven't seen anything that far "down" before, so making a beeline towards it.

I'll post a screenshot once I reach it. IF I reach it, the stars are starting to get very sparse, with a ~29LY range I may come up short. I'm hoping the view from there should be immense.

I got to NGC 281 with my 26LY range Cobra, you should be able to get there no problem. I always thought of it as 'The Lungs' on my approach (coming from the Bubble nebula).
NGC 281 - The Lungs.png

There are pulsars in the game but I'm not sure how FD have modeled them so they may not spin at insane speeds. Like yours, Herbig protostars are the fastest spinning stars I've noticed so far.

Returning from my 2nd time in the galactic core I went to the Circinus Pulsar just to check out if they are rendered any different. Unfortunately it looks like any other neutron star.

Btw guys, keep the good work up! I have bumped into a few of you recently, and I have to say that I admire what you do :)

Thanks Anuranium :)

Circinus Pulsar, mmm... another addition to the map to be made, cheers!

Some potential POIs from my trip along the New Outer Arm. Only trouble is that your maps don't currently extend far enough south :)

NGC 1893
This is an open cluster of class B stars. As such it is nothing especially remarkable except that it sits within the sparsely populated rift just inside the New Outer Arm so they really stand out. The cluster is just beyond the reach of current ships.

ngc 1893.png

Exteriores Australis (should be Latin for "Southern Outer" but it's 35 years since I did any Latin so could be wrong!)
A relatively dense grouping of systems on the outer edge of the New Outer Arm and separated from it by a barely passable region. It extends from about 11,000 to 12,500 LY on the X co-ordinate and around -16,000 LY on the Z co-ordinate. As such it contains the most southerly systems in the navigable galaxy.

Shackleton's Star
Lyed KX-A C27-0
Situated on the edge of Exteriores Australis, this is currently believed to be the most southerly reachable system in the galaxy, 16,521 LY south of Sol. It is named in honour of Ernest Shackleton one of old Earth's greatest Antarctic explorers.

Hermit's World
Eolls Hypai LX-B C16-0
Possibly the furthest Earth-like world from Sagitarius A* at 44,802 LY.

Distant
Angosk DL-P D5-0
At 45,058 LY from Sagittarius A* this is one of the furthest reachable systems from the galactic core

The Betelgeusian brothers
Two giants (M5 and S3) in different systems only 0.84LY away from each other.

So, I don't know if this is "of note" or anything, but traversing the Formidine Rift is recommended to be done with a 30LY jump range, I've just crossed with =~ 20 LY jump range on my way back from Bovomit. Maybe I'm just in the "Low Navigation Risk" North-West region, it's hard to tell. Crossing here, at some times there was two, maybe three systems in range at any time?

Here's roughly the start/finish points either side of the rift (you can see a slightly denser star cloud here). The Syroifoe Oasis is in the middle of where the blue circle is, for reference.

Screenshot_0045.jpg

A cut-down version of the route I took is here (every 20th or so jump, =~ 400-500LY)

Eafosys GS-P b33-0
Eafosys MV-R b32-0

So yeah, I don't know if this is of any interest. At a stab it looks to cross somewhere in the middle of the rift, so maybe it's a safe route for lower jump ranges. Certainly moving north-west more (off of the cluster of stars in the middle) it gets way too sparse again.

Huemea region
POI type ; Exploration hazard (medium)
Parts of region so full of neutron stars and white dwarfs it will leave you with little fuel if you decide to plot a route through it.
Watch your fuel tank!

This thread is great, thanks everyone for your great work. I'll spend some time giving some rep to you all later. :)

I'm currently in the core and I thought I might head "east" into the 4th Quadrant. There's a nice nebula right in the centre of MAP-04 that's 15,000LY from me, so I thought I'd fly that way and see what else I come across. The nebula's procedural name is EOCK BLUAE AA-A H36, it's on the inner edge of the "middle arm"- I'm unsure from the map whether that's the Scutum-Centaurus Arm or the Norma arm.

I've got a "Buckyball Asp" with a long jump range, but only a 16t tank, so I'm unsure if I'll make it as far as the Carina-Sagittarius Arm, but I'll give it a shot.

Oh funny thing that!
I'm also on the way to map 4 and 5, hoping to find some data for the thread there!
Feel free to add me (CMDR KOLA2)

OK...after 3 days of crunching numbers and tables for the different projects here, finally I started to shape some areas covered by my expedition.

I have 10 zones identified. Hope you like the names and that the POI become of help and awe for others as well!

I will be leaking them as I go in the following days.

Lets take the first zone as an exercise as well, so I better know what to put and what not in following areas.

The Wetlands
Game map search ref: Byua Thae VH-I c23-7
Thru: Syraloa ER-C c13-20
POI Type: Statistical & Scientific
Expanding for approx. 4,000 ly, this area is relatively more aquatic than the close by badlands, what makes it stand out from the neighboring Eta Carina Nebula in terms of systems, .
The Wetlands.png

Some of the most interesting systems in the area are:

*Renegade:
Game map search reference: Byua Thae DS-B d13-8
POI Type: Statistical & Scientific
A Neutron Star that has managed to only have 0.73 Sun Masses, yet keeping its remarkable impossible gravity and heat.
The Renegade.png

*Distant Cousin System:
Game map search reference: Trailua Tn-B C6
POI Type: Touristic
With four inner rocky, four giants, and even a smaller at the far end, this system looks like a cousin of our Solar System. Instead of an Earth, it has a terraformable Water World.

*Rautila Taw
Game map search reference: Trailua WT-A d5
POI Type: Scientific and Statistical
At 3,600 Earth Masses, planet 2 is one of the most massive Gas Giants in the area.

*Chacao Aparcos
Game map search reference: Trailua BH-C d13-45
POI Type: Scientific, Statistical and Tourism
With 106 objects, one of the crowdest systems in the Galaxy.
Chacao.jpg

*Chacano Partaos
Game map reference: Syraloa SY-H c10-11
POI Type: Scientific, Statistical and Toursim
Second crowdest system in the region.

You both might want to keep tabs on my posts. I just reached Sag A* coming precisely from Maps 4 and 5, so you can take a peak on where to cover. Although I flew most of the journey, way high in the Galactic Plane, +1,500ly.

The Lighthouse
Game map search ref: Praea Aec YA-F d11-37
Thru: Praea Aec MH-L c8-8
POI Type: Visual & Touristic
This area consist on a main system with minor POI surrounding it. (I met CMDR Miss Anthrope in the area).

Some views of the Lighthouse area:

Sitting in the heart of the region, these powerful and young triplets can easily be seen from light years away, helping those crossing the galactic arms.

Wow! This is a truly awesome project going on here. Made me mothball my T-7 and jump back into my Asp hitting the wild, wild frontiers NOW! Hope to contribute something decent soon as the areas I explored earlier were either a) within 1k LY of Sol, b) well explored by others by now, c) dull or d) all of it :)

I just checked the Cat's Eye Nebula (have a calendar image of it) but it seems to be inaccessible. But maybe there's something interesting along the way, who knows? :)

Fly safe!

Hi Kancro, I’m back at Sagittarius A* at the moment – I hadn’t left the local area, so I popped back into the system to greet CMDR Alot at the end of his latest record breaking Buckyball Run. Have you left Sag A* yet? I think you were still there last time we were online at the same time, but I don’t think you were online when I met up with Alot.
I’ll be back online tonight to begin my long voyage home, taking a proper scenic route this time for some galactic tourism. I’m going to visit one or two of the POIs in the core from this mapping project first as I didn’t travel beyond Sag A* on my first visit. Then I’ll start heading east.
My initial destinations are all below the galactic plane, so I’ll probably cover different ground to your own expedition, but I’ll detour towards anything interesting that I spot through my canopy. :) I’m also determined to make sure that I rendezvous with CMDR Kola2 and any other explorers who’re travelling in the eastern galaxy.
My plan is to see how far to the galactic east I can make it, then to travel back along the Sagittarius Arm to the bubble. I aborted a much earlier expedition to the Crab Pulsar in order to get back for a race, so I may try to cross arms at some stage to visit there and the other Nebulae “south” of Sol.
The announcement of Buckyball 8, or someone beating my Asp record to Sag A* might cut short my expedition though.
I’ve tried “farming” Neutron stars, but the tedium of it really wasn’t for me. I’d much rather play the galactic tourist and contribute to wonderful community projects like this. It might take me much longer to reach Elite, but at least I’ll fondly remember touring the milky way, taking selfies and meeting other explorers like yourself, rather than say, "yeah I scanned 10,000 neutron stars!"

Hail CMDR Raiko!!!

Yes, indeed!! On Sunday, at 19:20 hrs galactic time, the EES Orinoco left Sagittarius A* to continue with exploration schedule and route. At the moment I am diving to an undiscovered (?) system...actually to three possible systems that are candidates for a major galactic feature if my conjectures are right. I should be reaching that first stop within the next couple of days.

Afterwards, Master Elite CMDR Erimus has requested the EES Orinoco to perform a survey of the Neutron Field which is not mapped yet for the initiative. I am still unsure how to best tackle this task as the region is huge and vast. I have gathered information on the many reports about the NF that everybody talks so much about but nobody has really put a finger to it in terms of defining boundaries.

My plan is to, to my best of knowledge and reported positions here in the forum, locate the most Eastern, Northern, Western and Southern systems in this region. Travel to them in that order, take pictures and report them as the official boundaries for this huge space. I will resume my way to the civilization after that. If you are willing to help with the task, let me know and I will share with you the systems intended once I identify them, but I hear you might be on a rush to civilized space so don't sweat it!

Safe travels CMDR!!! And see you in the verse!
