The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

While traversing the Formidine Rift I found a cluster of unscoopable stars today. The "Very Welcome Scheau Hypue - Badlands". Normally such Clusters are to be avoided as they pose a high risk of getting stuck with an empty fuel-tank. But this one is quite welcome to the desperate explorer, who has been trying to traverse this otherwise low on stars and even lower on plot-able routes part of space.
After hours it finally made it possible for me to find a route to the Outer-Arm.

Name: The very welcome Scheau-Hypue-Badlands
Location: Formidine Rift, in the middle between the Heart and Soul-Nebulae and the New-Outer-Arm
Game-Map-Search ref.: Scheau Hypue HC-J b29-0 (The Entry system corewards)
Description: This small area of non-scoopable Stars provides a very welcome traverse-point for the desperate explorer, who thinks to be stuck in the vast Formidine Rift. Just scoop up what you can, CMDR, before you enter.

There's another one in the carina-scutum gap, amd i used it to to traverse. Whereas usually avoided, few explorers are atartimg to use those to traverse interarm gaps.
Interesting, so Erimus, still taking a brake or can we post? I'm holding few POIs charged ready to restart thread harrasment. (Main goal in the game right now) :)

If I understood him correctly, we can post unique POI here (if it is not 1.4 stuff), but he will not be able to take care of the data for some time. Which is o.k. for me.

Yeah just taking a short break from updating them. Hopefully find some time next week to add the lastest POIs.

Re: The Very Welcome Scheau Hypue Badlands ... may have to shorten that to something like 'The Welcome Badlands' as really long labels cover too much of the map (its best to keep them shorter if possible :))

Hi I would like to submit a survey of the first part of the Silentium Map submitting a region and 2 POIs. The region is a Badland in the gap between the Sctum Centaurus and the Carina Sagittarius arms. The 2 POIs are systems used as a start - arrive points in a route that crosses the badlands. But they are not beacon system, they are very interesting so this route is touristic.

CENTAURI BADLANDS: 4th quadrant, Silentium
(Navigational Hazard: Very High)
Everybody knows that almost everywhere in the galaxy there's a layer of unscoopable star at -30/-170 Y. But since these layers of unscoopables keep their density even in the lowest density areas, they become prominent. The gap between the Scutum Centaurus arm and the Carina Sagittarius one in the lower Silentium Map is one of the lowest density area in the game, and this makes your routes very convoluted. Now there's a slim layer JUST ABOVE the badlands where scoopable frequency is good, and star density too. This means that, keeping an extra eye on your fuel tank, you can actually use this badlands to traverse this gap faster. Here you can traverse with almost any jump range, but if you don't keep an eye on your fuel you could make the longest ratcall ever made...
Centauri Badlands 1.jpgCentauri Badlands 2.jpgCentauri Badlands 3.jpg
You can traverse where you want using the method described, i submit to POIs to add some sightseeing of weird stuff. Everybody that's been in the rim on the other side of the galaxy knows that ELW are super rare here, while ammonia is EVERYWHERE.
Look what I've found:

POI: Centauri Shores.
PRIA CHREA IW-N D6-19, 4T quadrant, Silentium, 51632.89 Ly from Sol.
POI Type: Scientific, Touristic, Historic, Nav Beacon.
This sytem has an Ringed ELW, Few Ice Balls, Few Giants... But it's a disguise, their sound betrayed them. One of the big Icy Balls was YET ANOTHER Ammonia World, disguised by a thick white atmosphere, and very big. On this side of the galaxy they don't let you drift alone. A system that can sustain both major life forms. But there's more. One of the gas giant is a Water Giant.
Now I have this project about planet sounds, Water Giants are rare, I didn't had the chance to hear one from a long time and... it sounded different, and had a different holo icon. This made me understand that our instruments change the way they percive reality (ehm, dev tweak stuff). So, becouse of this planet, I rewrote my guide from scratch, re-recording every object and reanalizing it.
From here, you can start to traverse the Centauri Badlands.
Centauri Shores 1.jpgCentauri Shores 2.jpgCentauri Shores 3.jpgCentauri Shores 4.jpgCentauri Shores 5.jpg

POI: Silentium Shores.
HYPHIELIE QH-K C22-0, 4th quadrant, Silentium, 58876.39 Ly from Sol
POI type: Scientific, Touristic, Nav Beacon.
If you want to just head north from Centauri Shores, you can end you route with this system. There's an ELW, a terraformable HMC, two Water Worlds, few Ice Balls, and YET ANOTHER Ammonia world that binary-lurks an Ice Ball, without even caring to disguise anymore. Now, in the last 8000 Ly I've found 13 Ammonia World, and only 2 ELW, that both have an Ammonia World in their system? Call me chilled. Note that, expecially in this area, this system is worth some credits, definitly a good stop if you are ascending Silentium.

Can't rep you more.
This thread is really a push, a reson to go for many of us.
And some of the namings have become regular exploration language.
Like the Formidine Rift, The Abyss, The Beagle Point, just to name few.
Sp even if sometimes you get discouraged by the no-love for exploration feeling, keep going!

I think its something that will become appreciated more with time, in a few years time new players to the game will hopefully look at these maps we've put together and see what the earlier explorers did and see how the 'story of exploration' unfolded. This is something I saw happen a lot in other games I played years ago (like Ultima Online), the players often created the most interesting content/history that newer players always drew inspiration from. :)

I'm not sure what plans FD have for the galaxy, but I was hoping by now they would have added some of their own official labels to the game map. Apart from out local region, they seem to have just left the galaxy as a blank canvass. :/

I'm crossing Solitude. Since now i made a 4k Ly route, halfway to the Permadesco Zoi system.
The only life forms I encountered live in gas giants. 4000 Ly, not a single water world, ammonia world or earth like.
A deep survey of the Galactic Map revealed that all stars are in Main Sequence, vast majority of them beeing cold M class. There's nothing out of main sequence (supergiants, NS, BH, White Dwarf, Wolf Rayet, C, S, MS, CN).
A very small number of TT stars have been detected in rare B class main star systems.
There's no nebulae, no star cluster, very low density of dust and stellar winds. Star density is very low, but still navigable with the route plotter (31,07 jump range)
Akira Masakari out.

Back in the days when I played Saga of Ryzom some in a guild made an awesome interactive map of the game world complete with different layers you could toggle to show eg. different resource sites, hazardous areas and the like. Building something like that for the galactic mapping project would be ideal. There are so many poi´s in the lists now that having different map layers, overview maps that you could click and zoom or a searchable database would be great tools.

It is also something I have considered with the maps I am making for the First Great Expedition - when I edit the raw map files in my image edit program I can easily turn layers on and off - and I would love to give this functionality to other users of the maps - but I lack the skill to make it into a web page...

Hey Erimus, another Permadesco system close to the one you found in solitude.
POI: PERMADESCO FRECKIE FRECKIE FG-Y D10, 4Th Quadrant, The Far Galactic Rim, Solitude, 63525.23 Ly from Sol.
This system has three Water Worlds. An odditty itself, and even more if you think it's situated a mere 2991,74 Ly from PERMADESCO ZOI, another system that has three Water Worlds. Both A main star system. Permadesco Freckie has a Terraformable HMC, and the closest Water World to the sun is terraformable too. All planets have atmospheres with heavy carbon dioxide presence.

On behalf of the First Great Expedition mission to explore the Sagittarius-Carina Arm, I would like to submit the following results from our mission to this date.

A total of 79 POIs have been logged in our mission POI registry. But it should be noted that this includes a few POIs that turned out to be allready logged here, and also that our guidelines for POIs are a little more lax that those found here.

You can follow our mission or explore our maps here.

The following are the POIs that I think should live up to the criteria here as well.
Contributed by CMDRs Argon, Corbin Moran, Dobbo, Draco, Ecthelion, Finwen, Hellhawk, Leifur Eiriksson, Marlon Blake, Matt Kowalsky, Mindwipe, Tyy'sun Eson and Vonner.

Major POI´s

Jewel box
Game map search ref. : CX Crucis
POI Type: Star cluster
An open cluster in the constellation Crux, originally discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during 1751–1752. This famous cluster was later named the Jewel Box by Sir John Herschel when he described its telescopic appearance as "a casket of variously coloured precious stones."

Eta Carinae
Game map search ref. : Eta Carinae
POI Type: Scientific
Binary star system. The primary is a peculiar B-star similar to a luminous blue variable that initially had around 150 solar masses and has since lost at least 30. Because of its mass and the stage of its life, it is expected to explode as a supernova or hypernova in the astronomically near future. This is currently the only star known to produce ultraviolet laser emission.
The secondary star is hot and also highly luminous, of spectral class O, around 30 times as massive as the Sun.

Woot, what an expedition!!!! Repped.

Face in the Nebula

Not sure if anyone has noticed this on the back side of Nebula BLAA HYPAI AA-A H68. I first noticed this traveling in the Blae Hypue sector traveling back from Sagittarius A. I am heading south and I was west of that nebula. You only notice it if you happen to be traveling to scan a planet and are facing in the correct direction and orientation. At first it reminded me a little of the painting The Scream but the face reminded me of someone I could not place at first. I would like to submit this as a visual POI if you are inclined to accept it.

My first view.
a Noticed.jpg

Traveled a couple hundred Ly to get a better look.
Closest.jpg

Then since this is space, I realized who I thought it looked like. Kind of funny actually but it fits.

Dr face.jpg

And finally, I was starting back on my journey and ran across an earthlike. I caught this by accident since I was not paying attention after I found the earthlike. I was in a hurry and did not stay to take more screenshots but it would be odd to see this in the sky. Added location for any others wanting to visit too.

I'm kitting out an Asp for exploration with mining equipment.

Happy to contribute to this effort, is there a particular part of the galaxy you want mapped?

Nice find Whoamus. Its definitely got a distinct look about it from that angle. I'll add it during the next update. Do you want to leave it as the Blaa Hypai Nebula, or do you want to give it a nickname too?

Best thing to do is check out the current maps and see where there is little data. I think there are one or two expeditions now making their way through the 4th Quadrant, but the far reaches are still vastly unknown. I think only Akira Makasari has reported back from there. The upper 1st Quadrant and the Abyssal plane are also pretty much unknowns at this point, but they're very distant. Depends how far you want to go really :)

Very far and a long-term project is what I'm looking for! Abyssal Plane it is, probably start in the next few days.

I think the nickname "The Screaming Nebula" would be okay. Anyone else may see a different face than the doctors. Even though I live in the US, I used to watch those old Dr. Who episodes on public television years back.

Greetings Explorers!
I'm migrating my game to my newly arrived super-duper-high-end-overclocked-monster-gamers-pc today :);). Download of ED seems to be endless. Time to go through my logs of the last two weeks.
There was not much to find on my way through the outer arm towards Bovomit. Endless class M-stars and icy-worlds.
However there may be one system of interest:

"Opposites"
Game map search ref. : SMAIDOU ZE-A GO
POI Type: Tourist / Exploration Hazard medium
One of the very few systems in the far outer rim in which you face a black-hole upon exit from hyperspace. So make sure to throttle to zero before the jump-countdown has ended. Having reached this far out one may no longer be used to the dangers of these high-gravity bodies. Oddly this system is despite of it's black hole host to two freshly born T-Tauri-Stars. Life and death are closely together here. An opportunity to refuel is provided by a nearby A-type-sequence star.
