The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Thank you CMDR Murf,

those stars belong to Messier 6, the Butterfly Cluster. It is also known as NGC 6405 and has some 80 stars in it. It is located in the constellation in the constellation of Scorpius. Its name derives from the vague resemblance of its shape to a butterfly. One of its more prominent stars is the B-type binary V970 Scorpii, which is also a strong x-ray source.

The first astronomer to record the Butterfly Cluster's existence was Giovanni Battista Hodierna in 1654. Charles Messier catalogued the cluster as M6 in 1764 and it wasn't till the 20th century that star counts, distance, and other properties were measured. The cluster was also surveyed by Henry Draper, who added several of its stars to his star catalogue (thus, the denomination HD).

It is already included as a cluster in the Galaxy Mapping Project. However, as the entry lacks a screenshot I'd like to add one of yours to the POI entry, if that is okay for you.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, I was wondering what that cluster was called, I guess maybe I should have filtered the map right lol.

Anyway, feel free to use any of my screenshots :)

- Desired Name: Jo Ella's Flares (Feminine of the Hebrew name Joel. Meaning "Yaweh is god". Also the name of the discoverer's wife.) I'd like to keep the spacing, but the actual name is Joella, so if you feel it fits better use the latter.
- Point-of-interest: Categorization: [Possible Tourism Candidates] Subcategories:pulsar (x3), Black Hole (x1), Stellar features.
- Star System reference: GRU HYPUE AA-A G4 (200 ly away from the deep space outpost of GRU HYPUE KS-T D3-31)
- Description of the phenomenon: A system of 4 bodies: 3 pulsars and a black hole. Of particular interest is the binary orbit of the black hole with the closest star: the orbital period is only 5 hours and the semi major axis 1,500,000 km. They are really close. Being relatively close to one of the outposts to Colonia it would make for a nice stop for any passenger liner, having both a black hole and a fast spinning pulsar extremely close together making for a beautiful sight right on the frame shift drop point.
- Screenshot(s): Imageshttp://imgur.com/a/fdEdW

The closest pulsar has extremely bright and wide "Gravitational wave cones", also they emit light at very fast frequencies. For lack of better words it flash like hell. It's not like most pulsars i've seen. Also his arg of periapsis is 4°. Anyone has more information on why it behaves this way?
Also the black hole seems not to distort light as usual, having the black hole in front of the star produces no visual effect at all (see images). Again, any idea?

Name of the submission :The Satsuma Nebula
POI type: Planetary Nebula
Star System: Screakue ZE-R E4-1264
Description: Called the "Satsuma Nebula", Screakue ZE-R E4-1264 was named by the Colonia Council to honour all the hard work CMDR Satsuma does for the community. The nebula is a pretty faint, small beautiful planetary nebula that has a purple and pink blob of cosmic glowing gas cloud surrounding a black hole, it was first discovered by CCN Exploration Wing.
The nebula is thought to have begun its life about 45 thousand years ago, its halo is undergoing “recombination”, a late stage in the life of a planetary nebula whereby atoms that were previously photoionized by radiation from the central star as the black hole forms recombining the electrons into neutral atoms dramatically decreasing the neubla's luminosity.

Jthorpe4 - I thought

we really don't want to encourage naming POIs after players - its something we've tried to avoid from the very beginning (even though one or two slipped through the net in the early days).

Who decided on all these names after Cmdrs? You alone, or is this C3E-related?

Screakue ZE-R E4-1264 was named by the Colonia Council
Who?

Hmmm, I'd like to know that too.

@ Jthorpe4 This is the first I've heard of CCN members naming things after themselves... tell me this isn't true!

Either way, can you come up with different names for those submissions please.

Jason named them after prominent CCN members, nobody has named any after themselves.

Cheers for clearing that up Souv. [up]

@Jthorpe4 the sentiment is nice as I know how hard the CCN Council has worked in bringing Colonia to life, but naming things after commanders opens a can of worms for the mapping team, one being that some people have paid a lot of money to FD to have things named after themselves. We don't want to step on those toes.

Since the project began there's been a stipulation not to rename non-procedural POIs, or name procedural POIs after players (although there are several from the early days that slipped through). And even though the GMP isn't official it does carry a lot of responsibility now as some names become Canon via FD, and thanks to the playerbase adopting some of the names and incorporating them into their projects, blogs, and exploration diaries etc (like Beagle Point, Rendezvous Point, Colonia, the Conflux, Hawking's Gap).

I wasn't aware of that rule, and as a member of CCN was naming smaller objects after CCN character from our lore, not players.
But I understand where you are coming from, give me a list of the ones you want changed. If you still want to use them.

Satsuma Nebula
Djhato Nebula
Souvarine Nebula
Qohen Nebula
Vespera Nebula
Luigi Nebula

Cheers!

What about the description is it ok to list the first discovered by Cmdr? At least people should be honoured for their effort in being the first.

I dunno if this qualifies or not, but it's significant enough to have a Wikipedia article, so...
