The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

So question. If you get to a POI (Say a Nebula) whose main center star say has previously been discovered, but other planets in the system or other stars have not shown as a "First Discovery" can you still submit a name for that Nebula? Or are you required to have your actual name on the System as the "First Discovery" in EDSM first to make it count?

I know many nebulas say here have had "First Discoveries", but aren't on EDSM yet. So not sure on the rules with this (didn't see them listed in the first post)...

You can submit whatever name you wish (with in reason and good taste) if you are the submitter of the POI. Who has tagged objects in the system does not matter for POI submissions.

Great (I do have my name on the water world in the neighboring system at least, not that it matters as you stated).

Name: The Allium Nebula

Game map search ref: Umbaists XJ-A E6237

Description: This is a small Nebula located in a less congested travel area of the Near 3kpc Arm just outside the main galactic highway from Sol to Beagle Point. The single star nebula is comprised of a 296 million year old neutron star whose children contain 6 ringed gas giants and a single high metal planet. This purple nebula radiates almost to the point of encompasing the neighboring F-Class Star in UMBAISTS WE-Z D1365 and it's terrestrial water world where you can see excellent views of the Allium Nebula from the planatary surfaces of the moons in this system.

Looks good! For future reference, screenshots of size 640x360 are preferred - these are equivalent to imgurs "large thumbnail" option.

Quick question: are all of the surfaces features mentioned in the Geysers and Fumaroles thread eventually going to show up as surface feature POIs, or should discoverers of surface features make separate submissions here? Should we submit only our favourite surface POIs here? Just curious if there were plans one way or another.

Thanks for everything you fellows are doing. The hunt for new POIs and surface features as well as visiting gems found by others is my preferred game mode.

I submit all the ones that are in specific place or looking good here. Geysers and Fumaroles thread tried to organise a contest, but i do not see it working, so I went rogue :)

Monoceros Passage

POI type: Minor route/crossing
System ref.: Jongoi MG-N C20-0 (Northern Base Camp)

Description: The Monoceros Passage is a route across the deep Perseus Fade between the Perseus Arm and the Outer Arm. It was established in June 3303 on behalf of the Explorers Association and in conjunction with the Monoceros Beacon in this near-void region of space. It was accomplished on an unspecified mission by Commanders Andrew Gaspurr and Domaq.

The passage is tedious and sometimes difficult to navigate. It's advisable only for dedicated, engineered exploration ships, and currently a minimum jump range of 109.36 light years on whatever premium injection or 'fumes' is required to make the crossing successfully. The passage has attached several "Green Systems" with all materials for FSD synthesis to facilitate navigation but it's still advised to stock up on Jumponium prior to setting off.

Additional resource: Monoceros Beacon and Passage Route Log

Monoceros Supply Line

POI type: Jumponium-rich system(s)
System ref.: Jongoi KF-A d0

Description: The Monoceros Supply Line is a number of systems that are all "green" by Rock Rat standards, which means they all have the necessary elements for synthesizing all three levels of FSD injections. The systems were specifically surface-scanned during an undisclosed expedition in June 3303 and they were meant to support and facilitate the Monoceros Passage, a tedious 'on fumes and injections' crossing of the deep Perseus Fade between the Perseus Arm and the Outer Arm Vacuus.

Individual system information can be gathered here:

1. Main Depot A: Jongoi KF-A d0
2. Main Depot B: Jongoi OL-Y d0
3. Northern Auxiliary: Jongoi EZ-S d3-0
4. Southern Auxiliary: Eorm Aip FQ-G d10-1

Given the large influx of Geyser/Fumarole POIs recently, I would prefer if we got only what people thought were the A+ best (5 out of 5, so on). We're going to add a whole separate map option for these features (separate from other Surface Features) because we are adding them rapidly.

POI name: Blue Whale nebula
POI type: planetary nebula

Galmap ref: Kyloall CK-A e7540

Small nebula with a single system based on neutron star inside orbited by class G star and 11 bodies including a water world. One place to observe it would be nearby Kyloall IA-Z d318 system with nice iron magma geysers on 2EA 45.92 46.94 or a black hole in Kyloall BF-A f678

POI Name: NGC 2440
POI Type: Planetary Nebula
Galmap Ref: Faust 1521

Desc: "NGC 2440 is a planetary nebula in the Puppis constellation. It was discovered by William Herschel on March 4, 1790. He described it as 'a beautiful planetary nebula of a considerable degree of brightness, not very well defined.' The nebula is red and green, and lit by a lone Wolf-Rayet star with no planetary bodies.

The host star was originally believed to be one of the hottest stars, but recent observations show it significantly cooled."

Can we get more details about this, please? The only other instance of this behavior that I know about, is from a gas giant at 8 ls from a neutron star.

Sorry, I was wrong, it is actually 74ls from the main star, thank you for pointing it out, I mixed it up with class B star in the same system.

Maker's Dozen has been added.

Traveler_GG, do you have more info on that system, such as the different types of terraformable worlds (WW, HMC, etc)? It would make the POI entry better.

I've been asked to add this system to the list of Galactic POIs:

It has 12 (twelve) Terraformable Candidates in one system. Just add water for an instant Empire. I'd like to name it "The Maker's Dozen"

It can be found at:

STUEMEAE ET-F D12-7473

POI Update for: Rosette Nebula

Desc update: "The Rosette Nebula (also known as Caldwell 49) is a large, roughly spherical, H II region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The open cluster NGC 2244 (Caldwell 50) is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula's matter. The Nebula is quite large in appearance from Sol, and would be as large as the full moon if visible. The actual size of the nebula is approximately 100 Ly vertical, by 80 Ly east-west by 60 Ly north-south. The nebula is 5300 Ly from Sol.

Due to the size of the nebula, several different NGC designations are given, and various names are associated with discovery; credit for observation and cataloging the Rosette Nebula can be attributed to at least Lewis Swift, John Herschel, and John Flamsteed."

and if you're quick I left 3 moons untagged.

After Pirin pointed out the bleeding obvious to me - could we please name this System as Cyrannus. (BSG home system)

Now he HAS pointed it out - I'm so enamoured with the idea I'd even like to put it to FD to get it named on the Galactic Map. Now we know where the Galactica set out from to get to Earth :)

I mean haven't we already talked about how the escape pods work? Everyone knows there's a resurrection ship somewhere nearby ;)
