Alpha 1.1 Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS Doesn't work?

Hey all,

I recently became a Beta Premiere backer, and thus have access to the Alpha 1.1 build. I was all excited to get started learning to fly, but ran into a hard brick wall when I couldn't get the game to recognize my HOTAS setup!

I have the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, and the Saitek Pedals. The game seemed to recognize the rudder pedals when I stopped on them in the setup, but when I try to setup the stick for Pitch and Roll Axis, I get nothing. The throttle does seem to be recognized as well.

Kind of hard to fly without a stick though!

What am I doing wrong? Is there some trick here?

In the Options, I selected Saitek Pro 55 as the controller, because Warthog wasn't an option for Alpha 1.

Haven't yet figured out how to move pilot's head to the side-menus. Yaw is mapped to the left throttle, so you have to separate the throttles.

So select the Saitek Pro 55 preset at the top?

My understanding is that in Alpha 1.1, Elite is unable to accept control input form multiple devices. I believe the Warthog's stick is a separate joystick from its throttle. (Unlike say, the X-65F which passes input form the stick through the throttle, and are considered different axes on the same joystick.)
I hear this got fixed in Alpha 2, but premium Beta people don't get that.
This has always been one of the major selling points for CH products for me. Their controllers can all be linked together virtually, and all of them report as different axes on the same joystick. This makes them functional for a *lot* more games that have half- their joystick support.
But I loooooves me my force-sensing, stationary stick. If CH products had one, I'd switch. But for now, my pedals are footrests in half the games I play.

Multiple controller device support was implemented in Alpha 3. You can only use multiple controller devices if you can merge them into one virtual device or wait for the final Premium Beta release.

If you want my TARGET script and instructions, PM me.

You can modify to your own requirements, and it will allow you to use all of the Wart's buttons (three levels, each with a "shift" so over 150 keystrokes potentially).

Hi

I have the Warthog too, and I'm a Beta user as well. The stick does work in Alpha 1.1, it's great in fact. :)

First of all you need to disconnect your rudder peddles, Alpha 1.1 only supports one input device.

Secondly because of the one device limitation you need to use the T.A.R.G.E.T software from Thrustmaster to combine your Throttle and Stick into one device.

I also use the T.A.R.G.E.T software to remap the buttons on the stick and throttle so they are all available as either Direct X Joystick buttons or keyboard keys. (Direct X only supports 32 buttons on one device, and the combined button count on the Warthog is about 50)

once you have created a profile in the T.A.R.G.E.T software, you need to run it and then launch the Elite program. Set up your controls manually rather than using a default profile. then you should be good to go.

Hope that helps

Cheers.

Yep this was my problem. The rudder pedals. Once I disconnected them, everything started working. Now i'm just working on mapping out controls as I Want them.

Though how i'm going to fly without pedals or a twist stick is beyond me :(

I think you need only fret for a month or so; the build with the alpha people is fine (ish) and I can only see it getting better. Hang on in there for 31 days...

I'm sure I can manage. Especially since yaw seems to have very little effect on the ship anyway.

Yaw has little effect during maneuvers, however it is essential for targeting, especially for fixed weapons.

I think that there are such settings for yaw in controls as "yaw on initial roll" and "yaw on low roll", which might be handy in your case.

How do you have your throttle bound? It should be the Throttle Axis. Do you have throttle range set to full range or forward only?

Do you have any devices on the throttle axis? The current Alpha only sees one device at a time, so for instance if you have a device on the Joy Z axis all other Z axis connected to the PC will also be bound to the same axis, so if you see "Throttle Axis: Joy Z axis" any other Z axis will be bound to the throttle.

On my setup as I have two devices with the same axis I have to move them both to get the full range.

Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update.

Heeey I have this same problem! I have My CH Throttle Pro, and my Joystick also has a small throttle slider type thing. I can only seem to use the Joystick slider for coontrol of the throttle. If i use the CH Throttle is only responds to minimum and maximum inputs. I really hope they can fix this soon.

I recently added the alpha to my second-round beta pledge. I have a newly purchased Logitech extreme 3-D Pro joystick.

I think I am experiencing a bug, but I wanted to ask here first. The alpha does not appear to be responding to the throttle axis correctly. It seems to behave in a full or nothing manner. I have checked its functionality with both the built in Windows calibration tool and the software that comes with the joystick. Both demonstrate that the throttle is gradual as it should be.

If this is indeed a bug I am experiencing, could somebody please point me to some information describing how to correctly report a bug for the elite dangerous alpha please.

I have this problem also, If you find a solution please let me know.

I have given you this answer in another thread:

As far as I understood you are using UJR, however I haven't seen the description of how are you binding your controls. In order to correctly bind controls in the game so that UJR axes were recognized you need to use Quick Bind Select followed by Quick Bind actions in UJR. Otherwise the axes are taken as they are assigned per device.

Hi there,

I havent been using the Quick bind function at all. Thanks for the tip i'll give that a go.

The description given in UJR might be not clear enough, so I'll give it a try to explain it so that it would be more understandable.

1. Open "Bindings" tab in UJR - you will see everything greyed out.
2. Check "Program Mode" box - this makes you able to assign key bindings
3. Bind keys to "QuickBind Select" and "QuickBind"
4. Uncheck "Program Mode" box in order to apply changes - everything becomes greyed out again.
5. Leave UJR open (I guess you already know that).
6. Launch the game.
7. Open controls options.

Now you need to do exactly the following, this is important:

8. Select axis you want to assign - "Move axis for ..." screen (popup) will appear
9. Press a key binding for "QuickBind Select" - you will hear peeping sound.
10. Perform a movement of the axis you want to assign using your controller device - axis will be assigned, peeping stops.
11. Repeat step 8 again.
12. Now press a key binding for "QuickBind" - you will hear peeping sound again and the axis from the UJR will be assigned (you do not need to move controller, UJR will simulate the movement the axis)

I guess that's all.

Thanks for your instructions, The UJR one's are definitely not clear.

Ok so i tried that, the binding seemed to work for the Throttle axis but in game it was no different, i had to use a combination of joystick throttle and CH throttle throttle, full speed and stopped is easy but anything in between is a nightmare. In UJR the slider on my joystick appears as "SL0" so i don't know why the game think's it's "Axis Z". Moving the joystick slider in UJR does not affect the Z axis at all.

For mapping buttons on my CH Throttle the binding system did not seem to work, i would end up binding the F2 key (QuickBind) to whatever i was setting instead of "button 13/14/15". Can you use this same binding system for the buttons? currently my button 13 comes up as Joy2 etc.

Anyway... As somebody mentioned in the Thread, the Alpha didn't support 2 controllers at 1.1, and the combat missions are Alpha 1.1, so i may just have to wait till the end of the month for the Premium Beta. Hopefully the Premium beta will be as up to date as the current Alpha and this won't be an issue anymore.

Try the following:
open the axes tab in UJR, press QuickBind Select and move controls for one axis. Then press QuickBind and you should see UJR simulating the movement along the same axis.
Does it happen?

Also do you perform movement during the beeping?
