I found that when i tried to use my F.L.Y 5 stick after M+K i couldnt fly for ****. This almost put me off buying the x52 Pro, thank god it didn't! Within 30 mins I was flying better than with M+K, my combat skills hadnt caught up tho, that took a few extra hours but I am at the point of being a lot better than when I used M+K now :)

I feel your pain. Did exactly the same thing. I've NEVER used a joystick for any game. Not only did I have to relearn the game but had to relearn a whole now hand-eye coordination. Having said that I would never go back.

Bought this Hotas 3 months ago, great hotas for price, but yeah took me a while fiddling with it. added voice attack and Headtracker IR5 ,
Makes flying so much easier. Now would not fly without it. Good Hunting
Cheers!

Just being curious about the typical HOTAS setup (flightstick and keyboard here):
How do map the Thrusters? Does the Throttle have 6 buttons? And (because the Extreme 3D Pro is like a poor man's hotas)
are they aligned in a way that makes sense, spatially?

Atmospheric effects

It's nothing like a flight sim. The forces on your craft are based on thrust alone. There's no "lift" gained from forward motion, the craft doesn't stall. Even gravity doesn't work - you just slow down when you're near a massive body. You can't (for example) slingshot around a star. Newcomers might be overcome by its complexity, but it's nowhere near as complicated as a flight sim.

Surely you wouldn't expect to have "Lift" or "Stalling" in a game with no atmosphere?

I'm currently using a xbox 360 controller and its perfectly serviceable. It's awkward to me trying to fly with flight assist off the way the throttle controls work. I started out with a mouse and keyboard and had no major issues there either, although I can see where the set up with a Hotas style joystick would make everything much easier to control. It seems the game was really designed for the Hotas type controller.

I'm using joystick and mouse. I've got my mouse controlling headlook and I've got the wheel on the mouse as a secondary throttle. Comes in really handy during combat. Also using the extra mouse buttons for chaff and shield cell.

I used a controller once, but quickly reverted back to mouse and keyboard. If you are used to using a keyboard for gaming in general there should be no problem using that in ED as well.

Joystick, yes or no?

Hey so I just got the game and have heard that the way to go is with a joy stick. Now I've been looking and many seem quite expensive, do you guys have any thoughts on the matter?

I play with an xbox 360 controller. It has 2 analog sticks. It may lack some precision but just equip some gimballed weapons and you're fine. Then if you like you can upgrade to an expensive stick an throttle.

It entirely depends on your preferred style of playing. I have a joystick and throttle control, while one friend likes the gamepad, and another is very good using the mouse and keyboard. When you play other flight/space simulator games what control method have you found easiest (and most enjoyable) to use?

I am using a Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas with throttle control (the two sticks can be separated), and it cost me £34.

T16000 and CH products pro throttle is my pick.

Logitech Extreme 3D is a good choice for the budget minded...

Z...
I use the T1600 with mouse and keyboard and works just fine. I tried with just keyboard/ mouse and did not like it. The joystick adds a better feel and overall experience to flying. I love landings.

for my setup, I have a logitech M570 5 button trackball, and a Logitech extreme 3D pro 12 button stick plus hat switch.

Without those, for me it would be unplayable.

docking I got trackball set up for roll so i hit the dock call up comms panel get acces, then trackball just slightly enough to match roll and cruise right in.

hat switch is set up for slide left and right and altitude up and down, so landing at a docking parking area is cruise in at 45 degrees down from the back, slow to 2 meters/sec at a few meters up when she's pinging red circles, pull up nose level with the stick, and hat switch down, locked, no problem ever.

My stick was i think 35 dollars or so from Best Buy in US. Not more than 45. Trackball about 30. I like the precision.

And I use every button, and switch on my rig.

If this game was like the old 84 game keyboard only?

no way i'd last here, i'm 49, with bifocals, and arthritis. My thumbs work well though.

- Agree 100% I love this logitech joystick. better even than my old thrustmaster stick. Plus it has rotation yaw. I'm almost tempted to see if I could get another one, and do two sticks, like flying a helicopter setup, for this.

Logitech 3D pro for me is a great stick. played this game for 10 hours til my install broke. Only drawback to the Logitech 3D pro is the grip is set up for right handed. if you are left handed, it's a little awkward to use the thumb button.

I'm thinking of writing to them to see if they got a stick for left-handed people. I bet they do, or could make it happen.

Wow thank you for all the replies! I'll definitely look into the many options and I think I'm going to get a stick from what you guys have said. Thanks again and see you on the battlefield!
