I'd like to add my thanks too, Zieman. I was rolling like a refrigerator being thrown out of an atomic explosion. Couldn't figure out why. "Roll Axis" has solved that, and now I'm dancing with the stars.

It's the stick.
I had the same issue with sensitivity with my sidewinder.
I retired it and bought an x52.
Actually, if you set left and right independently, you wind up with digital control. That is to say, you have either 100% full left, or 0% left, when you push left. It has to be axis control, its not a matter of sensitivity unless the stick truly is horribly broken. I doubt it would register at all in that case.

New to game, after joystick advice.

Ok so im new to the game, recently started playing on saturday. Ive been playing using keyboard and mouse which is good, i find it fairly easy to control though at time trying to strafe, adjust speed and turn all at the same time can prove to be a little messy using the keyboard.

Ive been looking at a few different youtube vids and i saw one showing a dual joystick with pedals setup which left me in awe. Im not 100% sure i need the pedals but 2 joysticks looks and sounds amazing so i was wondering if anyone could recommend some good joysticks for a dual setup. Bugets isnt a real issue but id rather not go over the top, aslong as they are good enough to have no issues.

Thanks!

why not go with a hotas? i have the saitek x52-pro (like many other cmdrs, i believe) and it's absolutely amazing. especially the throttle... i'm kind of surprised why people replace that by a second joystick, what do you do with it exactly?

They was using the right stick to Yaw and roll, and the left stick to pitch and directional thrusts i believe with pedals for the throttle. I cant remember the exact setup but it was something like that and looked very controlled.

Just to add a few thoughts here....

I started off with a simple Thrustmaster T16000m playing both Star Citizen and ED. It's cheap (€40/$50) and VERY accurate. The Hall sensors are basically the exact same module as a X55 or Warthog stick, both of which cost way more. And the T16000m has twist, which is very handy for yaw. The disadvantage of the T16000m is that it's plastic, buttons are not great, and ergonomics is compromised because it is intended for both left-handers and right-handers. But it makes up for that with the accuracy, zero drift, zero deadzone.

In my opinion ED is absolutely made for a stick, and I'd recommend keyboard and T16000m as the minimum to really enjoy the game. However, the keyboard does have disadvantages if you want to map UI, power, strafe, throttle, targeting to your secondary hand while just holding the stick (which means 4 buttons and 1 hat on top of the stick). Tips there include:
- Map strafe up/down/left/right to the POV hat for landing.
- Map keys on the keyboard for 0%, 50% (best manoeverability), 75% (perfect supercruise speed to ensure you don't overshoot a destination) and 100% throttle forwards, 50% and 100% back. This is more efficient than trying to juggle throttle speed in an analogue manner with a keyboard.

That said, I recently augmented my T16000m with a CH pro throttle. I didn't want to move "down" from the T16000m hall sensors to potentiometers in the X52/X52-pro, so I had to choose between the X55 HOTAS or just keeping the T16000m and adding a separate throttle. Given the reviews of the CH particularly for the quality of the mini-thumbstick, I went CH.

The CH has enough hats for power, UI, strafe forwards/backwards and a whole bunch of handy utility functions, and I use strafe up/down/left/right on the thumbstick. I never need to touch the keyboard, just the throttle, stick and mouse for galaxy map. It adds to immersion, avoids the need to look away from the screen to reach a key which isn't close to hand, and the analogue throttle and strafe axes are very nice (once you get used to them).

Despite this, I'd rate a stick as "essential to enjoy ED" and a throttle as "optional to make life easier". You can get by fine with the keyboard and buttons on the base of the T16000m.

Sorry, I forgot to add T16000m dual stick information but couldn't edit my previous post.

The T16000m is the only affordable stick around which can be used left-handed. I've tried dual sticks with two of them and indeed you end up with:

  • Primary stick for roll (X axis), pitch (Y axis), yaw (twist stick), targeting and weapons.
  • Secondary stick for strafe left/right/up/down/forward/back (using X, Y and twist axes), throttle (using the throttle slider on the base), UI.
You need to use many of the buttons on the base of both sticks with your secondary hand for power management, UI and misc functions. Gets quite complex.

How well does it work? Well right now I don't think strafe is powerful enough in ED to really get a huge amount of benefit. Having used dual sticks but also used HOTAS I would say a good throttle with many buttons/hats and a good analogue strafe joystick is a better solution.

Joystick Recommendations

Hi all.

Very new to Dangerous, but a rusty old dinosaur who played the original back in the 80s. Running Dangerous (beautifully) on my new PC, which is on Windows 8.1.

I'd like to hear any recommendations for the best wired USB Win 8.1 compatible joystick/throttle combo for Elite Dangerous. Had a peek at Saitek's X52 Pro Flight Control System, and would love to hear any thoughts on it, or anything better (within reason, pricewise). I must emphasise that it has to be fully compatible with Windows 8.1.

Thanks in advance.

Charlie M.

Hello Charlie M.,

just like you, I'm elite since 1985. and haven't played with a joystick for decades, but after I bought e:d I got myself Thrustmaster's T.Flight Hotas X and I'm completely satisfied with it. I have Windows 7 and didn't have any problems, since the joystick is Plug & Play.

The best would most probably be Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/09/flying-in-style-with-thrustmasters-450-warthog-joystick/) if you can justify spending 450 USD / 300 GBP on a joystick. ;)

Hi, C M, I bought the CH Fighterstick and CH Pro Throttle for this game and have been very happy. There is a downloadable profile for this game which is for the CH Manager software that comes with the products. Basically all functions are on the Throttle or joystick buttons no keys required. Particularly useful is the small thumb joystick on the throttle which controls vertical and sideways movement, great for take off landing. Yaw is on the Joystick under your right thumb which is also terrific for maneuvering. Highly recommended.

I decided to try the X52 Pro as i can always get another stick to match with it if i end up deciding to go with dual sticks. Only problem is now, is finding someone in the UK with stock who can deliver next day lol -_-

im just using an xbox controller - works fine and is cheapo !

Out of curiosity: How do you do power management, UI, and fit 7 degrees of freedom (pitch, roll, yaw, throttle, strafe up/down, left/right, front/back) onto 4 axes?
i.e. what functions work on the controller and what do you need to lean over to the keyboard to use?

ED supports key combinations and conditional functions, so you can map several functions to the same button or based on if your landing gear is out and stuff like that.
If you look at how Crab did it (my signature) you'll see he pretty much mapped all important functions directly to the Xbox Controller.

When I tried my PS4 controller using Crab's, I could play entirely without touching my keyboard, with the exception of navigating the galaxy map. Just so much easier typing your destination :)
