Greetings from NM, I have the Thrustmaster cougar hotus. I have had this stick for about 10 or 12 years.
it is a high performance costly joy stick throttle combo. I have probably flown every flight or space simm that has been released since the early 80's. I Have had a Thrustmaster F-16 stick, the F-22 stick they made and now this cougar. thrustmaster has always had great service for me anyway, They sent me a complete rebuild kit for the cougar some years ago, I have not needed to rebuild anything, great stick great company..
I have never had a problem with this stick till now with this game.
I am having problems with sensitivity on the up-- down axis.I keep bobbing all over up and down.
I have never had this problem before with any other games, and in real life I have mid air refueled, so I am not a bobber , lol I can and have hit the target.
does anyone know how to set sensitivity in game, or is there a way? I have tried dead zones to no avail.
anybody else with a cougar out there?maybe trade some profiles?
any help would be great
Thanks

Are you sure that you set up your joystick pitch as analog? The following was taken from an earlier post by me: "When you go into options and controls, you'll notice a preset drop-down list at the top. I don't think it matters which one you choose because as soon as you start making changes, it switches to Custom. I assumed the left column was for keyboard and the right for joystick and that's generally true, but not entirely. If you hover your mouse over, e.g., the left column at Yaw Axis you'll notice that the pop-up box tells you this is analog input. If you hover your mouse over the left and right columns at Yaw Left you'll notice that the pop-up box tells you this is digital input. This is important! Keyboard and most joystick buttons should be set up as digital input; however, the joystick pitch, roll, yaw axes should be set up as analog".

+1 Rep for you. I had a similar issue in local flight only with roll, could not figure it out.

Converting old gameport joystick to USB

I recently finished converting my old Thrustmaster F22 to USB operation. I also wired in the pots on the Suncom SFS Throttle I got cheap on eBay reecently.
Full details - wiring, code etc here: http://gerryk.com/node/45

It was easier than I thought, once I used the inbuilt shift-registers that were in the F22 handle.

Now to wire in all the buttons on the throttle.

Please give me some suggestions to buy a joystick (Already did my research)

First of all, I live in Hong Kong and English is not my first language, please excuse my poor English.:(

I can't buy things from Amazon and send it back like many player in US, so I got only one chance to choose (unless I buy it again), that's why I have spend a week to do my research about joysticks for ED/ST (reviews on many forum and Youtube channel), here is what I find and what I concern about:

Saitek:
X52 - Outdated, why not X52 Pro?
X52 Pro - screen is useless, adjustable hand rest, not bad, but why not X55?
X55 - Lot of button, looks good, I almost decide to buy it, but many owner said it is too big for some hand, I am not sure whether it is suitable for me as I can't find the length between the hand rest and the button of the stick, can anyone provide the dimensions of the stick itself so that I can measure whether it is fit for my hand? (Comments on this stick are also welcome)

Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X - Seems the quality of this product is quite good, I have think about it...but it looks too cheap and it got only few buttons....
Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog - Too heavy and expensive and need to buy pedals, don't wanna think about it.

CH Product - Many user has mention this brand but I never heard it before in Hong Kong, the design of the stick and throttle looks like a toy, why would people suggest this brand...?

Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!:)

The T Flight is fine and a lot of people don't realise you can assign buttons so you can get extra mappings. For instance button 2 + button 9 = landing gear etc etc. I don't have to use the keyboard except for the galaxy map.

Famous you tuber Ishonia uses one so flight control is fine.

Ironically the CH product that looks like a toy is by all accounts the most durable and well built (with the exception of the Warthog) and the X55 (which I own) looks good but is basically plastic rubbish that I'm expecting to break at any second. My X52 Pro lasted 12 days before breaking, Saitek/Madcatz quality is very poor.

If you don't mind having the throttle on the stick base rather than separate, the Thrustmaster T.16000M is good. It uses Hall Effect sensors so is very smooth and does not suffer from a deadzone. The stick twists to allow yaw control to be bound to an axis and there are twelve buttons on the base (only 6 really usable as they are on either side of the base), an 8-way hat switch, two triggers and two additional buttons on the stick top. The throttle is rather short throw but is accurate enough (for me at least).

I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. I use the keyboard for throttle and some secondary commands.

Similar to Robert Maynard's but six programmable buttons on the base with additional buttons on top. Lots of options for firegroups and target selecting / management. It also has yaw axis built in by twisting the stick.

I see the advantage of HOTAS, but what I have works for me. It is good value for the money.

BTW, your English is much better than my Cantonese. :D

CH stuff looks simple but it's very well made and well respected. Do a quick google and you'll see a lot of dismantled pics, advice, and generally a lot of info available (www.simhq.com is a good place to look too).

It's true that the X55 isn't the best for small hands - and I really don't know about the others as I've never really tried them. I did like the feel of the trigger on my mate's X52, nice heavy metal trigger, a bit of a let down considering the X55 I have is all plastic. That said I've modded my X55 quite thoroughly, so I can't really comment on the mechanics/gimbal/centering.

VKB Mamba series are really nice too, and not very well known (Russian made, iirc, stock is a bit hard to get but: http://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/vkb-fat-black-mamba-joystick-for-eu-customers/), they do have a russian site with more stock, but finding it and ordering from it are said to be a bit... well, it's Russian.

I have a TM Warthog stick and a X52 Pro throttle and stick. Warthog is lovely but I need the yaw that the Pro can give so I only use the Pro. Wish the Pro was built like the Warthog though.

I had the TM HOTAS X for 2 years. Loved it. But then it Broke. Got an X52 Pro and realize just how imprecise the HOTAS X was. HUGE upgrade for me. Friend had the X52, and I liked it, but I feel the Pro is a step up in feel.

Well, i bought the X-55 rhino some time ago, after a good month of every day use, the device ALREADY showed some wear and tear.
The twist was extremely stiff, and needed lubrication almost on a weekly basis.

After a good month there was a slight deviation on the stick.
And the buttons require a push, actually way too much imo in order to work.

The ONLY plus i found the X-55 rhino has are lost of buttons, and a double pink switch on the stick
-----------------------
I returned it to factory and asked for my money back, and got that, so costumer service, i guess for me worked out fine.

So i went on a long hard search for a good stick AND throttle.

And came up with the Defender cobra M5 and the CH Pro throttle.

I would of bought the combat stick of CH products as well, but it has NO twist, forcing you to either use pedals, or something else, since i find pedals extremely cumbersome too use i bought the defender cobra M5.

Boy is that my best buy ever for a flight sim game, sticks are both awsome.
They are super precise, and the buttons are light too the touch.

True they do not look like modern sticks, but i take one of these any day over a perfect working X-55, and that is a fact.
The X-52 pro is probably even the better buy over the X-55, thrust me, i had that stick too, its better by a mile, and they both use hall sensors. (they do not wear and tear because movement is registered by magnets).

Go for quality, and not the flashy appearance of the X-55, thats my advice i want too give you, if you want more info you can always PM me.

So advice the:
-Defender cobra M5
-CH pro throttle

Kind regards.

I can only comment on this as I own it and have used it for Elite for the passed 4 months.

The throttle itself isn't bad, but for fine control when you're landing your ship it has a tendency to stick when trying to make slight adjustments to speed. Otherwise the only other thing that puts me off slightly is the amount of buttons. It could do with a few more on the unit itself, but i don't ever find myself wishing for more in a dogfight.

However it's got enough to control most things I use regularly and it will depend on your play style. I mainly hunt bounties, so i've setup the thrust controls on the throttle and put the power controls on the hat. With a few spare to user primary and secondary fire and the rest for shield cells and chaff. The ability to twist the flight stick and have rudder control is very handy, again a bonus at this price.

Value for money really doesn't get much better, for the price bracket its a clear winner in my eyes when you match it up against the Saitek family, but it depends again on how much time you're going to sink into the game. In fact i am planning to buy a Saitek as i only bought this stick to see if i liked Elite enough to sink money into buying a more pricey peripheral.

Whatever you choose, you'll probably never want to go back to mouse and keys after using one.

After spending a year with Saitek X52 pro I'm going back to ChProducts.

Quality and accuracy of ChProducts out weighs the good looks of the Saitek gear.

I'm pretty tough on this stuff and I still have ChP gear from ten years ago that works as good today as it did out of box back then.

The new ChP stuff has some features my old stuff doesn't have so it looks like I will be going shopping as soon as it becomes available again.

I use the X55 Rhino, it's the only HOTAS I've ever owned so I can't tell you it's better than anything, i can say I can't find a use for all the button choices, BUT, the switches on the throttle are awkward and make it uncomfortable sometimes to rest your wrist on it, also one of them shocks me constantly.
