is there any reason to believe therell be NPC miners?

There's been NPC miners for a while, or at least NPCs with a special blue laser that shoot at asteroids (and since Beta 2, shoot at asteroids with their normal weapons too) and drop minerals when shot at. Presumably their behaviour will be updated to fully comply with the now-complete mining method.

NPC miners are already in the game in the resource areas I have been visiting.

As seen from screenshots, there will be mining lasers.
And im asuming that its a module you can fit on your ship.
So every ship who can fit the module can mine.

I'm afraid we'll be disappointed. Doubt it's gonna be a module. You'd have to make a choice and sacrifice a weapon slot or two to fit Mining laser/s. You can use Mining lasers for combat of course, just won't be too efficient.

From what I understand is that we equip any ship with a mining laser and then start shooting at the rocks

Well the Dev's can limit which ships can mine by requiring the mining laser be fit to a class 3 or higher slot, thereby excluding smaller ships from mining.. Which makes sense..

Just double-checked, and I can confirm this is the case. No self-respecting station will buy your ore unless this requisite step is completed first.

You will need to give up a weapon slot for the mining laser and an internal slot for an extraction module - or at least that is my estimation of where you would have to put them.

On the 28th of October, you will have the capability to mine them for profit. You will need two items to do this – a mining laser and an extraction module. After scanning for possible profitable content, you will set to work on your ‘claim’ with the laser. This will separate chunks of rock which you can scan, and then use your cargo scoop to secure those most worthwhile. Once it is safely onboard, your extraction module goes to work separating out its valuable contents. There is a big variation between the individual asteroids, even within a metal rich ring or belt, so once you have a good ‘find’ keep mining it until your hold is full!

So if I have to choose between mining lasers and a weapon, the mining laser will win every time, it's a no brainer. I would rather mine than engage in combat. I like credits.

just a idea, what if you could deploy mining robots, you could mine multi places at once, then go collect them (group at a time) cash in the minerals, collect your other group of robots, cash them in etc...

if anybody steals your robots while they are mining, you are entitled to request full payment from them or kill.
