The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

I think I wasn't clear - it's not that gradual motion shifting that you get in 2D. That's definitely turned off in VR (and luckily so because it would mean instant motion sickness :) )

The effect I'm seeing is a sudden 'jump' in standard position. As if I was pressing the HMD recenter button except it happens automatically randomly. For example, if I happen to be looking to the left, the left is suddenly 'straight ahead' so if I turn my head forward I'm looking to the right. It's just immersion breaking, and it seems to be a bug or a break in the tracking or something.

But yeah I think the CV1 is totally worth it. Even though I didn't pay for it (I was an original kickstarter backer) but I would have ordered one and I would have been happy with it. Elite is really well made for it, the attention of detail in the cockpits is amazing. They're so much nicer in VR. For example: I don't like the Lakon cockpits in 2D due to the basic flat dashboard, but they are amazing in VR with the super wide view with glass everywhere. I also love the spaceport and planet detail. I noticed the planet textures are a bit low-res in 2D but because the Rift is lower in resolution itself you don't really notice this as much, which is really great. I think this is a big improvement point in the current beta anyway.

No that's definitely disabled!! Gradual motion shifts not initiated by the user are extremely sickening with the rift so it would not be playable if this hadn't been disabled.

The 'Jumps' I'm seeing are not so bad in terms of motion sickness but they are just a bit disconcerting. It breaks immersion (by realising you're not in this cool spaceship)

I have to say though that my system is a bit slow for the rift and it constantly reminds me that I'm not meeting specs (I have a GTX970 but my CPU is one generation older than the one they require). Perhaps that is the reason.

Glad to hear they turned it off in VR. Wish they would do it for Trackir also but that won't be an issue very soon. The gtx980 is what FD is recommending for ED so it might be your settings are a little high for your specs. It does seem curious that it's a re-centering issue. I assume you've tried repositioning your sensor or changed it's usb port. Can't offer much help as I am still awaiting my Kit but perhaps someone else will chime in with a solution.

Good luck

Anyone using a CV1 with a 970? Is it playable?

My CV1 arrived but I'm trying to hold out for a 1080TI. Getting the back of my pc to rejig is a PITA.

Hey guys. I finally got my rift yesterday evening. I'm a complete noob with regards to VR so it took me several hours to get Elite Dangerous back up and running. Coming from not having tried out VR at all, I got to say I am blown away. :)

Let me list a few minor issues I haven't been able to figure out. Maybe you guys can give me some suggestions to try.

- The text being displayed. Especially for text that is somewhat far away (like the PIP display and the left and right UI panels). Text just seems kind of blurry on my Oculus CV1. Is there anything I can do to make the text more sharp and readable? I can kind of make out the text still btw, so it is not unreadable. Just wish it can be chrisper.

- Another minor issue seems to be for scenes with just a few sources of light, like logo splash screens. It almost looks like I am looking at it through a bottle (light is a bit blurry and dispersed, like the light is bleeding into the dark areas). I wonder if there is any graphics settings I can play with to improve this?

- Does resolution matter? The drop down only goes up to 1920x1080 which may mean it is talking about resolution for the regular displays I have connected and not the HMD?

- I turned off Blur and Bloom effects. I'm not sure if having those ON is making the "looking through bottle" effect marginally worse. I could just be imagining this. :)

- AA is enabled (SMAA) and I have supersampling at 1.0x. I tried super-sampling at 2.0 and my poor graphics card can't handle it i think. The scene is jerky as I move my head.

Anything else worth trying? Thanks again. If you have CV1 working quite well, I'd appreciate it if you could share your exact graphics settings. I am using NVIDIA 365.19 driver (latest) on a Titan X.

Edit: Cranking up in-game Gamma setting and dashboard brightness to max seems to make some of the text a bit better for me. I also tried playing with the NVIDIA DSR settings from control panel. It feels like it does nothing in direct mode since I cannot pick a resolution for the HMD?

I recall people changing their HUD colours to green. But I don't understand why green? I got a CV1 and it feels like I can see every colour well. Read text great.

It was because the DK2 was a pentile display with twice as many green pixels compared to the other colours, even though they're smaller. So like small green, big blue, small green, big red and repeat. So green was easier to read.

I think my major issue is the jerkiness when I move my head looking around. I'm using CV1, I don't recall this being an issue in the DK versions unless I have some graphic setting too high. How many others are experiencing this? Is there a fix for it? I'm running a 980Ti SC and running the game through the Oculus Store.

This has happened to me maybe twice over many, many hours of play. Windows decides it needs to do something RIGHT NOW. I've got an I7, 16 gigs, 980ti, and an SSD. I would look for things to kill in Windows.

I have the same specs as you. I haven't tried it today, yesterday was the first time I had the issue. With DK1-DK2 I never had problems. I figured it was a software issue with ED. I'll try it again tonight to see if I still have issues. It's really annoying and makes me not want to play the game. Hopefully you are right and it's just something running in the background.

Got the rift today and will install it this evening. Next to the install procedure is there anything in need to keep in mind to play properly Elite tonight?

The servers may not be back up ;)

other than that it is all easy

you may want to think about tweaking controls.... with no buttons needed for the hud panels you can maybe add them for something more useful.

Are you trying to run ss 2x?

The HMD's resolution is fixed at 2160x1200. Any changes you make in game or on desktop are only representative of your monitor. If you were expecting this first generation HMD to look as sharp as a monitor then you didn't do your homework. The light bleed (godrays) are known in both Rift and Vive. If you spend some time reading these VR threads you will find pretty much all your answers.

Thanks. And yes, I have been scouring the forums and internetz last few days. :) I just played a few hours with the 2.1 update and I can report I am pretty happy now with how things are looking.
- Text definitely looks better to me. I am getting about as much readability now as I used to with Supersampling set to 1.5. But now since SS is at its default 1.0, this allows me to crank up every other setting to max and run pretty smooth. Maybe a jitter once in a while, but it is rare enough to not bother me at the moment.
- Blur and Bloom still looks bad to me. I just turned them off. Don't seem to be missing much.
- Stars seem to look better with 2.1. Previously i distinctly remember them looking like smudges. :) Now they look more like points of light, which is good.
- MSAA seems to make text marginally worse, but station exterior (especially the mail slot) looks a lot better with MSAA enabled. So I have now settled on running with anti-aliasing.
- I am using a mild change to my custom HUD color now as many on forums have suggested. <MatrixRed> 1, 0.25, 0 </MatrixRed> Rest at their defaults. That seems to help a bit.
- Played around with both gamma and HUD brightness. I've settled on about mid-way on slide for HUD brightness.
- I can't seem to make up my mind about gamma. Sometimes cranking it all the way up looks best to me. Though it definitely makes space look a bit unnatural. Station exterior looks best (to me) with gamma cranked up.
- Sometimes cranking it up to about 3 levels from min seems to look best. (for example, station interior and starfields). But at the cost of some text readability and station exterior looks (and other ship views as well). I guess i personally just like everything lit up like a christmas tree. [yesnod]

Overall, with 2.1 i am finally back to enjoying the game and being immersed in VR rather than being distracted by the little imperfections.

Thanks for all the specifics. Even not having my Cv1 yet I noticed the graphics were tightened up a bit. I am on my way to NGC 7822. You start to see the star group at over 1000 ly. The change in sharpness
even without VR was quite noticeable after the update last night.

Maybe some of the whiners will give it a break now that they can see ED is working on it. If you look at the list of what is new and what is fixed and added you can't help but appreciate the work their doing. It is huge.

Try disabling motion blur ..

Just tried ED for the first time in my spanking new CV1. 'tiz rather good indeed.

The doom and gloom mongering on these forums had left me with a nicely low expectation so the actual performance is really rather good.
Yes there are some godrays, but they really aren't that bad. ED is by far the worst culprit as it has lots of high contrast visuals, but even at worst case it's not bothering me at all.
SDE is mostly (95%) gone, a very slight pixelation effect is left.

I can wear glasses in mine. It's not as easy to get on as the DK2 over specs but they fit, dont hit the lenses and are not uncomfortable in any way. Saying that I will be look at getting the VR lenses previously mentioned on these forums.

Overall - It's a good step up from the DK2. ED is improved a lot, but this game does its best to play to current VR weaknesses. Biggest improvement I've seen is with other titles like PRoject Cars and the Apollo 11 experience. There the gains are really large.
It has left me with a big chunk of respect for the DK2, it's actually a pretty good HMD even when compared to the first commercial releases.

So I ordered at release in January on a XXXX31XXXXX, and was rescheduled for a first week of June delivery, so it did arrive (via UPS) a week early.
And I'm really rather chuffed with it.
