The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Something like the artists pics we saw early on with the Cobra flying to a docking pad and buildings in a rocky landscape would do nicely.

Stuck out their for weeks the inhabitants would surely welcome dekiverues of Lavian Brandy and Onion head? :)

I sometimes use that PIC as wallpaper for my desktop. Its a nice PIC and I feel it portrays nicely what it might be like if they pull it off.

Can my thread also be separated again.

There were something like 16 replies to my death related question which have now been buried in 65 pages of replies to other unrelated questions.

That sounds fair enough. Sorry response to thread I started are now mashed in with yours.

Please let planetary atmospheres look like these. Not to much to ask for is it ? If you don't strive for greatness and all that !

The best and barely only interesting moments of this movie. But I digress.

Yep, I know it will never visually be on par with these screens, but I really hope they'll manage to get as close as possible to the awe-inspiration they provoke. Just like my first docking in station was, and still is.

Simply wow!!! Stunning pictures...

The pictures are beautiful but it would be unfair to expect ED to generate scenery realtime to the quality of a film pre-rendered using professional animation software.

I am sure we will be suitably impressed with FDs offering when it arrives.

Fps/mulit crew/planetary landings

Hi was just wondering if there are any updates on the above listed? Thanks for any info.

Planetary Landings et al

I know you guys at FD are probably very busy with the upcoming 1.3 release (which looks like it'll be great by the way!), but we haven't heard anything on planetary landings in a while, so is it still something you are planning to release at some point?
_
And if so is it being worked on now or is it just "on the list"?
_
I see a lot of posts around from different people talking like its a done deal, but there's been nothing from FD AFAIK since this newsletter last year.
_
I'm just worried it's found itself in the "too hard" basket alongside Outsider.
_
So come on guys, throw us all a bone here, the silence on this is starting to feel a bit ominous....

Planetary landings and walking around your ship/stations/planets have always been cited as paid expansions.

I'd be surprised if we hear anything about these before the end of the summer.

I've no doubt that the early stages are already in production however.

Did I read something about Frontier contracting the 1st person expansion to an external company or dev group, at least in the early development ? I might have my wires crossed on this one.

It is going to be a paid expansion, like walking in your ship/stations. I wouldn't be surprised if the first paid expansion would come in 2016, or maybe at the very end of 2015. I don't think they got past the very early stages of work for now.

I agree with you: as so many hype was built around PP, some news could also be released to those players waiting for something more consistent like Planetary Landings.
This not means that we want PL now; this means that we would like some info about it and about dev status for this feature.

I think first expansion will be after XBox One version release, so end of 2015 or q1 2016... It will be walking in your ship, maybe stations too! Planetary landing is very far from point to talk about it.

They have said that they are working on paid expansions in parallel to the core game:

Our first commitment is supporting the game with regular updates. This won’t just be the fixes and tweaking we’ve provided since release but will also add new features and content. Examples of this are Wings and associated multiplayer features, as well as the additional ships mentioned in recent newsletters. We’re proud of the fantastic game that we released before Christmas but intend to keep growing and developing it. To make this happen we’re expanding the team working on the game so that we can maintain a regular schedule of updates as well as working on paid expansions.
From the first Dev Update.

As for them throwing a bone...this snippet below is probably all you are going to get. ;)

Maybe - but like any feature it's bang for buck and there's other celestial stuff we need to do first.

Michael
And what "other" celestial "stuff" are we talking about? ;)
Planet surfaces spring to mind :)

Michael

That was written just two days before the Dev Update quoted above mentioning them expanding the team so they can work on paid expansions in parallel. So I would say it's a done deal ;)...I also predict some sort of planetary landings is part of the first paid expansion which most likely will come at the end of the year.

I realise it's a paid expansion, but I'm still interested to know if it's something that is being seriously considered for release at some point. And since it will be such a big addition to the game I'd be interested to know if it's actively being worked on now as it seems to me it would need to be even if it's not going to be released until 2016.

Thanks for the links Tinman, but the dev update was at the start of the year and the only timescales mention in it are updates "in the next few weeks". Plus, the planetary surfaces thing could just as easily be a reference to their ongoing enhancements to the rendering of planets when in orbit, e.g. city lights.

DBOBE talks about it - its an old vid but still an interesting overview of their aims:

Jump to 2:18 if the link doesn't take you there.
