The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I suspect it will be similar to changing ships in station, in that you are briefly rendered unconscious, only to find yourself coming to in the cockpit/bridge of your other ship, with no recollection of the journey between them.

In other words, seamless :D

Flunitrazepam anyone?

With a faint smell of chloroform in the air :)

Like how you get from the outside of outposts to the inside? Press a button and your chair sinks into your ship and slots into the SRV, which is stored in a hangar below in the belly of the ship. Hatch opens, off you go! Never have to leave the chair.

I like that idea, but are all the ships built with the cargo hold underneath the cockpit? I'm thinking T9 specifically.

I never got bored of the Wing Commander animation of running to your ship/canopy lowering? with alarms blaring. Well, thats what I remember, memory could be a bit fuzzy, twas decades ago :D

Direction of chair travel variable ;). I play in the Rift and ED makes more sense than any other game because your avatar is reasonably persistent and never leaves the chair. So for me I'm always keenest for any new mechanic to be handled in a way that doesn't require a change of the avatar's orientation or body position. And especially not a cutaway! Just immersion-breaking :) I can see my way feeling really amazing (especially if we could engage some sort of optional auto-landing and deploy over planets). Docking in stations etc. always feels great in VR. Floating disembodied in the air looking at yourself whilst buying things less so :/

maybe only ships with a certain mass weight....

I think FD confirmed that all ships could carry an RV, so I'm hoping that you can land on planets in all ships.

I wonder what happens if you land upside down and can't take off again, or get stuck nose down in a valley? I'm planning on having a few accidents :D

All? Even the ickle Sidey and slimline Eagle? I have my doubts....

I believe Braben stated in the livestream yesterday that every ship will be able to carry the Scarab. It is apparently going to be the smallest RSV, and it is also apparently going to fold up. But all we have to go on that is Braben's words.

Edit: an got ninja'd to a response.

The best thing about the PL (airless moons) is that this open up for a whole new kind of game play.
You can now have full battle planet side. I wonder if we can setup a FOB and deliver supplies, like ammo and fuel for an on-going war? that would be great as you will need to setup a logistical route from a station and transport it to the FOB.

Rebels can attack the convoys and all kind of interesting game play can out of this.

I also see a new level of running away from other players too. Players that have PL and are being hounded by a player, can run to an airless moon/planet and land. Log out, then continue on later.

I doubt there'll be that many players without PL after a short while. Considering the number of alpha backers, prem betas, and original lifetime expansion pass holders there's a lot who'll have it by default, and with the massive amount of interest in the expansion it's fair to expect most of the rest of the players to buy it pretty quick. That least the few stubborn ones that are either holding out till FD reduce the price and those who simply can't afford it (kids and unemployed mostly I guess) who will probably quit playing after a while. The core game's so shallow, and missing out on 50% of the expanded game would just be too depressing to hang around for.

The same as what happens when you buy a new ship.

You know? That amazing lengthy fully motion captured experience where the pilot climbs out, heads into the dealers office and sits on a chair for half an hour drinking some coffee from the machine while he waits for some guy to bring him some forms to fill in.

And then you have to sign all 500 pages of the bill manually with your mouse... I remember all this, yes. Yes I do.

The Scarab folds up like a transformer or something when you load it on a ship to save space. Which is why all ships can carry it.

Imagine later when they add some other cool feature that has nothing to do with planetary landings but is still in that season. No reason to skip seasons IMHO.

The sidey can carry 4T of cargo and DBOBE's already said the SRV will take up cargo space. I can't see a single person moon buggy and launcher weighing more than 1 ton, can you?

Uhh yeah, that's kinda where I was going with that. In a short time after it's released there won't be too many people playing without PL. Most people will get it, and most of the rest will prob stop playing.

Someone posted on one of the [infinite] Horizons threads here that the Scarab weighed 4 tonnes. But I've no idea where they got that info from.

Can't see that happening, unless the thing's made of lead. :)

Doesn't really make sense to me either, but who knows where that rumour came from?

Then again, the Python is maybe half the size of an Anaconda, but only 12.5% lighter, so maybe the Scarab is made of "Python stuff". I think the game does take some.. liberties.

It would be quite limiting if it does weigh 4T, it'd mean if you're flying a Sidewinder you'll need to use 2 of your 3 internal compartments for cargo racks if you want to bring back any mined materials etc.

The Eagle is the same size as a single aisle airliner (think A319/A320) Sidewnder is only slightly smaller. Nothing ickle about those ships :)

Eagle and Sidewinder SRVs confirmed!
