The possibility of ship weapons being more effective against troops

Is it intentional for cannons with the experimental effects Force Shell and High Yield Shell to NOT be effective against ground troops? Their description, especially for High Yield Shell, reads like there would be an effect (because of the addition of low yield explosives to the projectile). If this is intentional.....

Would it be possible to add new experimental effects to existing weapons or new weapons especially effective against troops on ground? I've recently been exploring/testing RP gameplay in support of Odyssey missions/working at settlements and think there is some room for growth. If the mindset at Frontier would be strictly have explosive weapons used in those situations, maybe adding a fighter or two with missiles or cluster bombs. An SRV with Artillery Rockets.

If they were to go the route of new weapons for ships, maybe adding an energy weapon that strips shields of CMDRs in an area of effect (AOE) watch out friendlys... An explosive weapon with wider AOE, slower rate of fire and added shrapnel (either naturally or as experimental) that causes a stagger effect on troops. Cluster bombs for ships (class 1 would be sufficient). Projectiles with HE (High Explosive) effect and small AOE.

HE could also become an experimental for existing Projectile weapons, to include Multi-Cannons. Rails could have a variant with AOE or experimental effect modification for the same.

If anyone reading this has their dream weapon additions for ground combat/troop escort, throw it in the comments! I would love to get this seen.

I also would be interested in some more options to bring ships more into play for ground combat in as fair/balanced a means as possible, be it a SLF that's air to surface focused, or allowing full sized ships to equip better anti personnel options than just rockets.

back during the announcement there was the below statement.

"The Sphere of Combat

Experience intense first-person combat, kit out your character with an array of weapons and gear, and coordinate with teammates to master a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge."

Right now it feels like the only place for ships in that sphere of combat for settlements, is to take down reinforcement shuttles, and i really feel like we could add a lot richer gameplay by adding more options like OP suggested.

Its not about enough, its about having options. Do they work? Absolutely, can't argue that. Would I like something else besides? Also true.

Really the thing that got me looking into it was the description of the experimentals. But people in general, like options. Look at all the different ships we have.

I don't think ship sized weapons that deliver that level of kinetic energy are going to be target specific. There's a case to be made for those things hitting the ground having the same effect as an explosive weapon.

While I have no ideas, or suggestions, I won't hide that I find railguns failing at point-blank range funny and outrageous at the same time.

Absolutely spot on. Not going to waste my time on something as immersion breaking as this. Sticking to exo and whatever onfoot activity there is where things make sense.

Even multicannons, which do piddly damage per round, are supposed to be nominally explosive - that's what makes them cannons instead of merely machine guns.

So doing some testing, I also want to point out that even said reinforcement shuttles, seem like they're normally not unlawful/hostile so if you shoot at them, you end up with a bounty/fine.

Unfortunately yes. Maybe the shuttles are independent taxis or something. Sub-sub-sub-subcontractors.

This would be way to OP. Lets be a tiny bit serious here.

Do you even realize your Cutter is bigger than the settlements? Why can I not just wipe the whole settlement with my Cutter cannons? Or crush individual buildings with the nose of my ship.

Do this mission without setting oft the alarm. WHAT ALARM?

If they weren’t de facto associated to the pirate faction in the system upon dropping in (but apparently remained lawful) I’d buy it.

I just guess Frontier did this because god forbid players nuke the dropships consequence free, instead of dealing with the scavengers (also consequence-free). My most recent favorite way is using the ship’s nose as an impromptu hardpoint to kill them. Or that one time I actually positioned perfectly to have the idiots land right on top the ship and I simply hit upward thrust. Think one of the scavs survived as combat music kept playing, but I never saw them again before I finished up.

Thing is, a Cutter with 7 advanced missile racks is lunatic levels of OP. The issue isn't about the ability to massacre a settlement with fiery ship mounted death in moments, we can already do that. The OP just wants a different flavour of death to throw about.

This exactly. I would like to be able to choose the way I bring carnage. Lots of friendly troops in the AO, bring my A-10 of a fighter and it be effective. Don't need target selectivity? Cool, blow it up with explosives. I think the majority of us like the options we currently have for alot of the gameplay loops, I'm just suggesting/begging for a few more of those options.
