Anyone can find it, and more than once
It could be tied to those missions Braben says hasn't been triggered because the players don't play the game as planned (what players? What was planned when Cmdr Jameson himself stated he settled for money and fame?). If so, the "asset" might be triggered in a specific location by the specific mission given to the specific player, so it would be impossible to just go out and look for Raxxla, and still, it would be accessible to every player who can trigger it (if no other prerequisite it is still in line with the quote I believe).

It is, in my opinion, almost certainly tied to TDW. The key is to contact the esoteric circle of TDW, I believe. How ? I don't know.

Well, since we’ve diverted (hopefully only briefly! 🧐) from the Quest for Raxxla onto lore discussions, let’s clarify by considering a current event. Yesterday, 13 April, Galnet published two “news items” on the outcome of the combat in the Tavgi system, between Caine-Massey’s partner Tavgi Blue Life Inc versus Torval Mining Ltd, over the hunt for the alleged assassin of Caine-Massey’s former CEO.

Both sides are claiming victory in the battle, and both sides are claiming to have the suspect in custody. We, as participants in the ED universe, cannot know which side to believe because the gods-view absolute truth is being intentionally obfuscated. This just reinforces that NPCs in the game can, and do, lie. You have to be very careful what you believe, and ideally base that belief on things you can verify for yourself, or (less reliably) on multiple supporting sources within game (but they could still be mistaken/lying).

We are now in 3309. Now Raxxla was first brought to our attention in a novella written hundreds of years ago. That novella claimed that there is a mysterious planet named Raxxla which is controlled by a group of evil elites and which has on its surface an alien gateway to other universes with consequent treasures. Wisely in the current era we suspect, since there is no corroboration, that this is mere ancient storytelling myth.... however we do have a few religious sayings handed down from God (almighty Braben) and his angels (including archangel Michael) which we believe to be gospel & I have posted these sayings several times in this thread. I shall repost this holy writ, in the hope of gaining Braben’s favour and receiving further illumination. However I’ve made no sacrifices ( other than that of time, vainly trying to find clues in another more recent novel “And Here The Wheel” but finding the universe is significantly different from what it described), but I did have a rather nice lamb tagine with couscous for dinner last night, with a couple of sacred brandies..

Everything we know about Raxxla, all else is supposition:

(MB) “It’s in the Milky Way” and “you have to make some of it a tiny little bit obvious so people know what they’re doing”

Q: founder's world name?...Shinrarta Dezhra... I'm a tiny little bit disappointed they didn't call it Raxxla - A: (MB) “Raxxla is something different”

(MB) “FD did look at a story involving Raxxla, but felt that was a story that should be played out in game rather than as a novel”

(MB) “It’s something in the game world (not text) and very hard to find”

(MB) “It’s not a random thing”

(MB) “Anyone can find it, and more than once”

(Allen Stroud) “it is a topic within the Alien lore book” that we as players have no insight into

(DB) “Does Raxxla exist? There’s an interesting one. What a silly question. Of course....you don’t know what it is though!”

MB’s “Anyone can find it, and more than once” I find very significant. Not “can find it when the permit is opened” or “when the end game is reached”. IMHO it definitely indicates we can find it NOW!

If you include Ascorbius’ uncorroborated report (but IMHO believable) that Michael Brookes said at a closed Q&A (probably Lavecon17) the system where Raxxla is located had been visited and honked but Raxxla was not detected...then Raxxla can be found now...

There is more holy writ, with some pictures and a strange diagram given to us in The Codex, widely available to all pilots, but sadly my studies of it have not led me to Enlightenment, and I suspect some of it may be somewhat misleading.

Now, can we return to the Quest? 🙂
Didn't DB say something along the lines of 'it might be easier to find if more people scan for it' ?

Cant find the source for it.

Side note :
I still believe Cassiopeia is a prime candidate for exploration, here is why :
  • Cassiopeia is a constellation in the northern sky named after the vain queen Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda (I know, mother of galaxy/galaxies).
  • The appearance of the Milky Way supernova of 1572 belongs among the most important observation events in the history of astronomy, it was visible in Cassiopeia ((burning jewel)
  • Cassiopeia A is a supernova remnant and the brightest extrasolar radio source (burning jewel again)
  • α Cassiopeiae (Latinised to Alpha Cassiopeiae) is the star's Bayer designation. It bore the traditional name Schedar, which was first encountered in the Alfonsine tables of the thirteenth century. It derives from the Arabic word صدر şadr, meaning "breast" (brow, round, breast, mother) : https://inara.cz/elite/starsystem/27552/
  • It is visible from Earth circumpolar. Could it be the true meaning of a Dark Wheel?? An orbit!

FD confirmed such was not included in game because it did not exist in the catalogue they used. We’ve been here before. It is a perfect candidate, but FD stated it’s not in game!

Yes but no source, I might presume this was a misinterpretation from back when he talked a lot about exploitation, I feel it might relate to how dark systems were to be discovered, but it’s all 3rd hand information now so nothing is conclusive.

All we really have is the Codex.

where can I find what DB said about these missions?
Look in my signature for link to a thread I created to capture important information utterances from FD & the source link is there.
DB was saying that they expected players to follow the missions & they were intended to guide you around the universe....most of those missions are within the bubble, but passenger missions take you to scenic views at long distances.

This was reported by someone within this thread, cant remember who, but I never found a source for it and I believe he was the only person that reported it. I have repeated it a couple of times in the thread in an effort to jog people’s memories, without result. The trouble is that it rings a very vague bell in the depths if my memory. I seem to remember some livestream where someone asked DB about Raxxla and his answer was that it might be found if enough people honk it so might be best found by a wing. Some of the very early livestreams were deleted from the FD YT site, perhaps in one of those? It would have been between mid 2015 to end 2016, when I stopped watching livestreams (at my age life is too short!). Whether this is memory or imagination I do not know. Nothing similar has ever been repeated, so even if he did say it then it might have been misdirection? It may also have been retconned!!

Well, doni forget Mother Gaia-main faction in Sol, the birthplace of humanity. Gaia created the Sky, which contains all galaxies! Also a 20th Century astronomical research satellite.....

Search this thread for my hypothesis about Dark Sirens, neutron stars, black holes, supernovae etc. I did a lot of exploration but found nothing and got burnout from the travel. There are several RL supernovae remnants that are not implemented in game, several quests were attempted to find them. MB said they weren’t in the star catalogues that were used to build the ED galaxy.

I read this in Jorkis Summary:

David Braben:
“There are missions out there I know almost no players have seen,”....I wasn’t making friends with the minor factions.

I accepted a mission by TDW today .
i was asked in a message to do a "chaos" mission and kill 20 civilian ships.
so I asked myself what if becoming enemy to a faction triggers events in game?

Try it and see! 🙂
(If your moral compass allows you to kill civilians, and if you don't think that will count against you in some way🧐)
P.S. Ive pointed out in the past that TDW are described in Codex as “adventurers and treasure seekers”, and in the Elizabethan era “gentlemen adventurers” was used to describe pirates! 😎

I can forgive myself.
and I know the difference of a videogame to real life... :)

a new question from me:
is there anything special about marlins reach?
i am asking because of this

That's Merlin in Ross 154
Merlin is a Arthurian Wizard
Ross 154 was the starting location from Elite II Frontier (On Sirocco Station)
The Elite II Gazeteer describes it as a Fishing Planet, specialising in fish-based food stuff
Ross 154

A very small system with little to attract any interest. The only reason it is mentioned here is the curious ecosystem on the ice world Merlin. All the indigenous life is beneath the ice of the vast salt-water ocean, which covers the entire world. It exists in large pockets of gas, trapped beneath the permanent stable ice sheet, and in the oceans themselves.

It wasn't until 2775 when Burt Hackrington-Smythe made the series of documentaries "Heaven Under the Ice" that it was understood how such a world managed to sustain the large shoals of merlin fish found here. The ecosystem is based on a lichen which grows on the walls of air-filled chambers under the ice, living off the weak red light which filters through from above. The lichens produce oxygen to give a mixture surprisingly breathable by humans, and they form an insulating layer. Typically the temperature inside can be as high as 20 degrees Centigrade. heated by the thick layer of rotting vegetation which floats on the surface of the sea below. A whole host of other species graze on the lichen, lighting the cavity with their various glowing body parts, and species such as the Merlin Plesiosaur with its fierce red glowing eyes (much valued for its silky hide) travel between these oases, eating a few of the grazing creatures at each stop.

The life cycles of these cavities is tens of Earth years. They start as little high-pressure bubbles deep under the ice, and can grow up to about five kilometers across, giving the truly beautiful panoramas depicted by Hackrington-Smythe. The cavities slowly migrate to the surface as the ice above them melts, and their eventual death can be quite spectacular, when suddenly a crack forms in the ice above the cavity and the pressure is released. There is a long rumble as water floods the cavity, then rushes up through the hole formed, forming a giant moss laden geyser on the surface above. The shoals of merlin fish rush to the sound of rumbling, to feed on the debris which falls into the sea below, and it is for this reason that the fishing industry on Merlin was so easy to establish. No fishing fleets are needed - each factory simply releases an explosive charge in a man-made cavity below the reprocessing plant, and an hour later it is full of fish! Strict controls are enforced to prevent overfishing, since the early private fisheries almost wiped out the stocks in only four years.

The only surface settlement is the windswept Sirocco Starport. It is built directly on the ice sheet, and is used to supply the numerous fish processing plants built under the ice. It is also through here that the huge tonnage of fish is exported to the surrounding worlds. The seedy starport diner, The Ecstatic Gourmet, serves an excellent dish called Merlunch which is a pie made with pickled merlin fish. It sounds off-putting but regular travellers to this area make a point of visiting the diner just for this, rarely risking the other fare.

D.B.

I don't think you can land there though, because of the atmosphere.

Famous explorer missions. Most of which are reputation locked. Passenger missions can further be locked based on cabin type and/or size requirements.

Back to basics.
So whilst mining ive been looking back at my Journey, where it all started with that Novella.
When Robert Holdstock wrote it, the Alien World must still have been on his mind as it was only four years after and i am assuming that the complete guide was the first ever mention of Raxxla.
So IF, IF!!, he had that universe in mind when writing 'The Dark Wheel' we already know where Raxxla is and how to get there (admittedly vague).
Bare with me.
Raxxla is in the Green section (A) depicted as a swirling galaxy, we (The Milky Way 12) are in B the Human sector divided from it by the Frontier and Samarandara's Pearls.
The book clearly states that Ahmed navigated his ship/probe through the Urgenirk Darks, (a line of Black Holes) and reached the Raxxla sector.
The Dark Wheel is described as a galaxy inhabited by Human type life forms and fabled by the Narathnu, it also tells of a Human Generation ship that discovered that region.
Still with me?

So its still my belief that Raxxla (as such) is not in game because its not in the same Galaxy, BUT the way there is, we just haven't found it.
For me it still hinges on Black Holes and a way to travel intergalactic.

However there is a huge flaw in my plan Blackadder, the Universe depicted in the Alien World doesnt tie in nicely with Elite
At the time of publish (August 1980) the book lists the year as 10674 AE, which would make our current year (3309) 10716 AE meaning we invented space flight 10k years ago, obviously not right.
The book also lists the first stellar age as 2987 AD - again doesn't fit the ED timeline.
My conclusion? i have none, i would love to think that Holdstock's vision of the Universe was Elites, but im beginning to think that only the Idea of Raxxla was put into the game and maybe im barking down the wrong rabbit hole.
