Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

Looks to me like it would be best to make Elite a PvE game with solo mode and a star citizen style Arena mode for PvP people. With tweaks to balance such etc.

Also make powerplay a "proxy war" with players competing with each other though who can deliver more cargo or who can who can kill the most ammount of npcs

Both responses i presume are sarcastic and neither is a good idea. People who want PvP can do it.

FD need to work out what type of game this is and put the other group out of their misery. Market it as one or the other not both as half the player base will be disappointed..

Frontier decided over two and a half years ago what type of game this is - then pitched it successfully with Backers putting in over £1.5M because they liked what they saw. It has always been marketed as a game that can be played solo, with friends or with everyone else:

Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter said:
Our galaxy. Its an awe inspiring, beautiful, vast place; with billions of star systems, planets, moons and asteroid fields just waiting to be explored, and exploited. The triumverate superpowers of the Empire, Federation and Independents dominate their core system volumes and constantly skirmish to outmaneouver one another on their frontiers. Outside their influence, in the vast majority of the galaxy, anarchy reigns supreme and spectacular discoveries await the bold.

Its dog-eat-dog out there – you need to keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Whether you want to trade for profit between systems, take part in multiplayer co-op mission alliances, free-for-all group battles and team raids to bring down planetary economies, even tip the balance of power in the galaxy (for your own advantage, of course..), or simply explore the wonders of the galaxy (and who knows what you’ll find out there..) is up to you.

Your second-to-second actions could have you taking the roles of trader, pirate, bounty hunter, leader, team player, opportunistic assassin, grand schemer, and more. You are at the centre of the action any time, any place and any way you choose – each action has a consequence, and influences the galaxy around you.

Starting with a few credits and a basic starship, carve your own path through the richest, largest gaming sandbox ever created, set against a backdrop of raw anarchy, galactic powerplays and intrigue. Do whatever it takes to upgrade your ship’s hull, engines, weapons, defences, cargo hold; constantly improve your capabilities and influence on your journey towards the most coveted rank in the history of gaming - ‘Elite’.

Fight, trade, hunt your way across a giant galaxy of billions of star systems, starting with a basic starship and a few credits. You can make money from trading goods between the many star systems, by destroying pirate ships (and collecting bounty), or even by attacking traders and collecting their cargo (which in turn will get a bounty on your head!). There will be missions too, and exploration. Most people will do some combination of these things. Upgrade your ship and specialise in one activity - have a trader with a huge cargo bay, or use the space for weapons and maneuverability.

Real Freedom - Go where you like, be what you like - pirate, bounty hunter, trader, assassin, or some mix of all of these.

Trade - Buy low, cross dangerous space lanes, evade or destroy pirates en route, then sell high, if you make the journey!

Fight - Take on the pirates or be one yourself

Progress - Get your pilot rating all the way from "Harmless" to "Elite"

Explore - Head out to the far reaches of space and discover amazing sights

And the best part - you can do all this online with your friends, or other "Elite" pilots like yourself, or even alone. The choice is yours...

This is one thing I can't really understand, a totally different platform not being interactive at all but being able to affect my game.....

It's a core feature of the game - every player affects the same galaxy.

So far i have to get my adrenaline part flying in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, and everyone who knows how it works will know what i want.

Not every player is seeking adrenaline or emotional stimulation - some just want to relax after a hard day in RL.

in a few years EVERYONE will be playing together regardless of format.

Hopefully (but probably not for games where rodents reign supreme as the controller of choice....).

I tried to join no one got back to me :(...

What about those who want interaction but don't want interaction that means their destroyed without their consent? There is nothing for us.

I don't mind handing over some cargo to pirates and enjoy the challenge of avoiding them but don't want to be destroyed for no reason. I can't play it my way...

I wonder why....

A thread was started requesting an Open-PvE mode - it would seem that the PvP players are against the proposal.

Unfortunately, I don't think all the 'naughty' players want to play only (or even at all) with other naughty players, and therein lies the problem.

Exactly - there are those who see all other players as their content and get annoyed when the latter choose not to play with them.

I don't see the explorers complaining, nor the solo / group players .. I suspect they are all satisfied.

It's just the PvP players who object to the other ways of playing as they don't have as many target to shoot ;)

You know, you might have something there....

More points/merits for stealing cargo from or killing players. PP needs better balance anyway, 15 merits for killing a target in sc, but only 1 for doing it in a war zone? 1 merit per ton of stolen cargo? It's pretty time consuming to take cargo.

Increasing the incentive to attack players changes the PvP / PvE balance - given that DBOBE has stated that he considers PvP to be a rare and meaningful thing, I would not expect players to be made even more of a preferential target.

RE: SC t sound like it is also trying to be something for everyone. I have the feeling it like ED is a start up type so they need to try and generate as much money as they can..

Yes, they are also trying to grab as many folks as possible - but Freelancer did bring a fair few folks together and it's by the same guy (I loved FL, one of my all time favourites).
As for raising money, that is not a problem;

sc funds.jpg

Also, just a quick update for those wanting "interacts" so badly;

mobius count.jpg

There you go folks, that many people to "interact" with in every way possible minus the baby seal clubbing.
So anyone saying they are not a baby seal clubber, see you in there? Otherwise, be honest over what you want :p

not with me they wont!. IF you are correct and we get some Orwellian type future where everyone can always see and interact with everyone else and we do not even get to game our own way, then I think I shall be moving to Alaska or some such place and will become a recluse!.

I sometimes game to be social with friends, but even then, my closest friends, as often as not I game to unwind after a cruddy day at work, and I want to interact with NO ONE. I sit in my room, on my own, put my rift and my headphones on and just escape in my own headspace....... maybe with an audio book on if i am exploring or heavy trading. This is why I adore elite, it is pretty much the perfect game for me.

but force me to play with others, esp others i do not know, then my time will be done!.

edit... the more i think about it the more i think the prediction willow made could be made into an episode of Black Mirror!.

I know I am more introverted than many when it comes to gaming (which is odd as I am quite outspoken when it comes to the rest of my life) but everyone is different and have different wants. for those who want constant interactions there are tons of games out there. ED is a rare breed these days

LOL... the irony is excruciatingly delicious.

Less ironic and more "trying to maximise the herd" in my opinion. By keeping all players who like the benefits of Open (being able to meet and play the game with other players) and take subjective penalties (e.g. random PKing for no reason) as part of the "experience" in a single Open mode, opportunities for PvP are increased....

I was going to post something like that over there, but I figured I'd best not. As it would end up being merged here.
But I completely agree with that sentiment. None of this has anything to do with "balance", "being fair", "improving (or fixing) the game" or any other such rubbish.

Those arguments were shot down long ago.

Posts stating the network solution is wrong or that DBOBE is a liar when he says things are balanced (without any proof of either) just show how badly people are scrambling for any excuse no matter how desperate it makes them look, to force non-open players into a style of gameplay they do not want.

I do think FD trying to make a game "for everyone" is setting the bar quite high for themselves, but fair play to them for trying something new (new again! in DBOBEs case). I hope it pays off and I hope everyone can find their corner of the galaxy to be happy in.

imo if you think the complains are loud now, it would be a complete muck storm if FD did an about face and screwed over the mode switchers and solo players.

This is true - honestly I'm enjoying the game, play it for fun and don't expect any big changes. I would have preferred if FD gave a little more thought to the design of the multiplayer aspects of the game so it feels more social and MMO-like (because other players, nice ones and not so nice ones, are really the spice of gaming), but it is what it is.

I still consider the "play how you like" in a competitive multiplayer setting a failed design concept. It introduces far more problems than it solves. It may sound good on paper, but in practice... this thread? It's going to outlive the game, however long that takes. :)

It was "play it your way" I think - which to me always meant "play it your way (using the methods we've provided)" rather than "play it your way (and we'll change the game to suit you)."

To be honest it seems more of a throwaway marketing phrase.

Glad that you're enjoying the game - I am too.... :D

The encouragement to "play the game how you want to" that has been given to us from the beginning was, I believe, a large contributor to the success of the Kickstarter pitch. Without that £1.5M of potential player backing, we may never have seen the game.

While some players like their gameplay particularly spicy, others prefer something a bit more palatable with a breadth and depth of flavour - without an overwhelming spice spike. With the choices that we have available to us in the core features of the game, i.e. three game modes; the shared galaxy; mode switching, we are permitted to season our own experience to our liking - it's not just a single pot of "take it or leave it"....

Could you explain this please?

I cant understand why that feature unbalances the game and why people who play in solo affect you till make you suffer and feel that the game is terribly unbalanced...

Find any MMO that has PvE and PvP with active forums.
Read those forums for a while.

You'll notice the exact same lines / arguments from the PvP crowd that you get here. They want non-PvP people enticed/forced/encouraged or outright blackmail into playing PvP.
And most of them don't want to fight each other, they only want to fight those who either won't fight back or are not skilled enough to fight back. As soon as someone becomes skilled enough to fight back, the attackers move on.

So, the balance issue is that the bullies cannot bully people. And that's just not fair is it. ;)

The excitement of Wings !!!
The excitement of Piracy !!!

The excitement of Player versus Pla.... oh wait! Not a single human was harmed in the making of this video;

Oh spoiler alert;

The video contains "interactions" between players while they bounty hunt and pirate in game.

(The lack of spoiler tag is on purpose)

"Rare and meaningful" is a completely subjective term, some find pvp "common, but meaningful", others find it "extremely rare/non existent and meaningless", who is correct there?

My idea while making pvp more common will also give it meaning. It can easily be argued that merits can provide extra meaning.
