The Star Citizen Thread v5

Folks

Sorry to break up the party, but could we please stick to the topic?

Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen multiplayer got pretty epic. PVE, PVP, colluding, group warfare, treachery, backstabbing, seal-clubbing noobs - everything!

I think the point I'm trying to make is that despite the huge advances in graphics abilities, audio, connectivity, processing power and available audience - multiplayer gaming hasn't really changed - because players themselves haven't really changed. What a wing of RNGneer FDL's would consider "epic win" against a noob is exactly the same as a group of 4 Chaos players casting illusionary dragons against a noob and consider "epic win"

We had multiplayer games in the 80's :D

Some younger folk around the forums and Reddit can be quite disparaging about the 'forum dads' or '84-ers'.
I'm an 84-er and while I might be slightly greying at the temples, I still remember the pain and anguish of cassette players and impossible levels. Elite Dangerous is a far easier game today that those old ones. Defender on the BBC Micro drove me to distraction and I never reached Elite in Elite!

Question, though, and back on topic...is the PU going to be the same as the BGS? Does CR plan something similar or will it be bigger and better running on millions of servers across the world?

Indeed - that's when you dangle a couple of Titan X's at them for lulz

It doesn't seem to help in SC at the moment though - motion blur is terrible and the texture loading times are pretty nasty.

I think sometimes players make the mistake of assuming "opinion A" = "Age B".

I turned 47 this month, and am still doing my best to be superior in combat. ;)

You can turn off the motion blur easily enough. Texture loading taking excessive times - I haven't had those problems, so don't know what to suggest.

I'm only 40 and am still doing my best to be superior in completely avoiding combat ;)

As for texture loading - it's not the "loading" itself that is the issue - procmon shows files loading extremely quickly (install is on RAID 0 SSD's after all) but instead getting them to switch from low LOD to high LOD to render on-screen, sometimes a full second or two. It can't be lack of VRAM - there's 12Gb's of the stuff. It doesn't matter if I switch off surround and run off one monitor, or decrease the resolution.

In fact - for giggles I've just bought a Vulture and am going to head out and try this combat thing. Maybe I'll get beyond Competent lol

I learnt my twitch based multiplayer gaming on LAN. *buffs medals*

Ha! Noob. Got mine playing Pong with my sister (which also had a solo mode if I'm remembering right).
But it is something CIG will have to address: If everyone is forced into PvP, it's going to put some people off; any failings in the C&P system will put more off; and the fact that some people will have better ships (and LTI) because they paid more cash will put even more off.
This has the potential to turn into an epic flustercuck (even more than it is already).

So, what's handcrafty in current PU missions? Last iteration I have played was 2.5, but there were three mission types: ICC probe, which consisted of flying to a location, killing some pirates and pressing a button/picking up an item (I'm still not sure which it was) after leaving the cockpit; satellites, which consisted of killing some pirates, getting inside a satellite and pressing a button, and the investigation mission, which I haven't played yet, but I'm pretty sure it's about picking up audio logs onboard of a destroyed station. Apart from the last one, which is impossible in Elite because of the lack pf spacelegs (but which is roughly equivalent to scanning data nodes on a surface installation), those handcrafted missions don't offer anything that can't be found in Elite's procedural, extremely simplistic mission system, but there's no way they're cheaper to make.

Hm. Couple random ideas:

1) It seems to be standard advice to delete your USER folder (be sure to keep your control cfg file thought!) after each Alpha update, and let the game rebuilt it. Try that if you haven't.
2) You mention changing resolutions didn't work; I run in what I guess the game thinks is "native" for me - 1920x1080. So whatever your "native" is, maybe try that (though it sounds as if you already might have.)

If those don't work, I'm all out of ideas unless there's some other magic here that could help.

Pretty much everything. IE, I don't believe those 5-8 current missions were just all procedural.

You've got it. Leave the ship, float over and do something (click, etc.) You can also salvage cargo near one area, but it's not a mission - just credit rewards.

and the investigation mission, which I haven't played yet, but I'm pretty sure it's about picking up audio logs onboard of a destroyed station.

The investigation mission involves exploring several floors/rooms of an abandoned station. It's sort of a maze, and the goal is basically "find the object".

Any of the missions can get more interesting if there's another player in the vicinity, though. At some point, I hid inside a station waiting to see if anyone would come along and try to deactivate the security grid (and thus, try and shoot/stop them.)

Someone did eventually come along; they had enough sense to start by clearing out the rooms, not just blindly walk in aimlessly and wander around. I ended up being the (surprised) dead guy in a space suit floating away. Fun times. ;)

Well just played 2.6. I think it is a great step forward : The loading times are sooo much better now, AC looks better than ever and plays really smoothly on my old PC, and I like the new flight model.

I can't play Crusader on my system, my i3 isn't up to the task.

This video sums up why substance in a smaller world is more important then a huge universe full of nothing. SC if going the right route imo.

+1 Jim bringing in the pain truth again! Great video!

TotalBiscuit also did great in the last video of the year! Keeping big corporates in check these handsome devils! [up]

So I finally downloaded the game(took 2 days, I have crappy internet). Popped into play star marine, terrible just the worst fps gaming experience I've ever had. It reminded me of playing on dial-up but way worse, but it's pre-alpha can't exactly hold the terribleness against it before it's fully released. I don't understand why a engine designed for FPS would have such issues being a FPS? I'm not a coder, just a lowly tester.

Onto the PU! I pop in, seeing a connie out the window and I decide to take it for a spin. Getting into the pilots seat is a bit easier than the previous version of the game. Everything powers up and I go to take off. Nothing happens. Engines have power, shields and weapons are good, yet nothing happens. I wonder if the key map had changed in this new version, nope, taking off is the same as before. Can't get the ship unstuck from the platform, oh well, I head back inside and spawn my 325A. I get back outside and open the door. My ship disappears and appears to be spinning away at high warp from me. At this point I just exit, no point until the tech demo advances far enough to warrant another look at it.

I did notice they moved the missile racks from between the wings to under the wings, is that all they are going to do to the 300 series?
