The Star Citizen Thread v5

Virtual servers have several performance issues which doesn't make them ideal for let's say server/client roundtrip management. Thus I don't believe twitch based game like SC will be able to do it fully virtual. There will be dedicated servers, and it is pointless to argue if they will be in Google/Amazon data center or they will be their own hosting hubs.

Am I missing something, or is the whole cloud hosting discussion a moot point? I thought that using Lumberyard locks SC into an AWS solution anyway; they may not have the luxury of choosing another option.

Edit: oops - completely wrong here. Read another post instead.

AWS have dedicated server option. All of cloud offerings have.

Pretty much. The main problem there is that Amazon is pretty forthright about AWS not being suited for persistent games. If you're making something that's session-based or that just handles some kind of persistent unlocks and stats tracking, then it works (but you're still not looking at anything like EA/DICE); if you're looking for something to back-end your MMO, you might be in for a bad time…

In other news, these things seem to be all the rage, and this was a particularly good one…

Do they offer "The Dream" server option. Where data flows down gossamer threads, and hundreds of thousands of commandos can fly about in their love chariots at one time?

Amazon aren't into LSD/Meth sales last time I checked :D

I suspect if there would be such option it would cost gazillions, considering dedicated server option costs comparingly like first hit on street vs regular dosage after one week.

A lot of unhappy campers in that thread ... The tides of opinion are certainly changing .....

Not sure who GW is , so that is lost on me ..

Games Workshop – makers of all things Warhammer, famous litigators, and universally known for screwing over and overcharging their customers every chance they get.

Ah, heard of them from my D&D days ..... And the fact there is a shop in town. Was unaware of their rep however.

Yes it really is, 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 seamless km3 is what I call a large map

Really, the Milky Way, which a certain other game resembles is around 6,650,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 km^3, a rather bigger number :p.

Seriously though, if the seamless map of yours is 10^20 km^3, it is equivalent to a cube of around 1.5 ls on a side, i.e about 7.5 times bigger than the Sun (1 star). Not that it matters too much: I've always thought it good fo SC in a way that they can design totally unrealistic star systems that just suit gameplay purposes better than realistic systems, unhindered by any peretense of realism

…not to mention that SC doesn't have a “100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 seamless km3” map — it has a world that's (somehow) 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 km long. And it has loading screens, according to CIG. It also apparently doesn't have maps at all. So it's got to be like the world's most tedious runner game. :D

As for the 100 sextillion km³ misreading, that's still 20,000 times smaller than Betlegeuse — pretty tiny as space goes.

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is.

Unless you are playing Star Citizen.
In which case, it is not.

Wow, if each of those km takes one kb of data storage isn't that 99999999999999.98 terabytes?

I hear those maps don't compress too well either.

I wonder how these "super maps" will be delivered. Surely not as downloads, nobody will have the bandwidth let alone hard drive space. Streamed maybe, using the revolutionary netcode that's going to allow all of this whilst serving up the real time sim packets of up to 1000 other players?

Sounds like they don't need to bother much with the game. They'll make a killing of this magic tech alone :-D

Indeed. Or they could sell the tech to fund the game.

Now, if I was into trolling Reddit, I'd start a thread asking why they aren't doing this. But I'm not. So I won't. And I sincerely hope that nobody else does...

Haven't seen that variation, don't know which one is the "original" one but there's several around the web all mildly humorous:

The VR Navy version

The "Buy an Idris" Version

The "Team 6" Version

There's probably more out there, fun stuff.

Yeah it's not really about how the "size of the map makes for a better game" but more about the technical achievement that allows for the game developers for less restrictions when designing the worlds we play in.

If there's something that NoManSky showed perfectly is that people don't really care about how many planets, galaxy's, solar systems you give them if there's nothing interesting to do in them. Quality over quantity all the time. After all The Witcher 3 only needed 136 square kilometres to be considered GOTY. :p

For what Star Citizen we can expect what they showed in the Gamescom/Citizencom demos. Big worlds but with detailed HUB's of interest to get quests and several interesting hand-craft stuff spread around those planets with distinct humanoids, aliens and fauna to engage.
