Community Event / Creation Thrustmaster Warthog Configuration & Sheets

I'm the proud owner of a new Warthog … except I don't know what to do next. I see three main choices and was hoping there'd be a general consensus as to what's best.

1. Use the Warthog controller definition built into ED.

2. Use Keyboard and Mouse in ED and then Target with Thrustmaster's pre-built ED configuration.

3. Use Keyboard and Mouse in ED and then Target with someone else's pre-built ED configuration.

What's the view here. I'd really prefer not to try all three and make up my own mind (due to lack of time). If there's an obvious right / popular choice then I'd prefer to go with that.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

PS: I tried a training mission last night (with option 1). I think I may actually suck big time.

What I'm doing is starting out with the default Elite Warthog settings, modify while learning, once I run into limitations I'll start using Target. It's hard enough to remember what does what anyway since I play with the Rift on (can't look at cheatsheets).

Definitely try the default setting it out yourself to get at feeling for which buttons you constantly find yourself clawing for and which ones you do not find necessary in the beginning. Biggest problem with the default setting is that it has no yaw for fine tuning the aim, so I highly recommend setting that to thumb button left/right on the joystick.
All functions you cannot live without you should place within a finger reach (target select, boost, fire group select, yaw, roll pitch, primary and secondary fire). All others should be dedicated to actual hand movements.

Later I found myself constantly reaching for landing gear and supercruise and placed those closer to my hands as well (throttle china hat for SC and landing gear on the left-most stick throttle handle)

Try the defaults first. Modify the defaults as you want.
If you want a little more then look at a custom profile using the TARGET gui.
If you want the most options available, look into a TARGET script profile.

The script method allows you the most control. You can enable sequences on a button, multiple commands on a button, map an axis to In game buttons, button modes etc.

e.g.
The pinky switch on my throttle sets the three different FSD modes (cruise, normal, hyperspace) with the left throttle button engaging the FSD with a long press or engine boost with a short press.
I have the friction slider set to scroll through the scanner range settings.
Utilising short/long presses enables all the targeting commands on the stick target management hat.
All the UI controls on the throttle mic/comms switch.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It seems the clear message is to start with the FD defaults, tweak from there, and only getting into TARGET once I really see the need for it. Makes sense to me.

I should have said in my original post that I also have the Saitek Pro pedals, so yaw is sorted. (In theory). In practice I find I often have my legs not straight without realising it. I guess that, and all the various Warthog movements and buttons, gets easier the more I try it.

Hopefully.

Just wanted to share the current configuration I'm using in Elite with these joysticks. I'm loving it so far :) Thanks for the all the info on this thread. #18 is for Fuel Scoop, just noticed I didn't put it in there.

P.S If there if anyone can point out more useful toggles that I can map out to the unused ones, let me know :D

Hi Net-burst, I've not been playing much since the last update but I'll give your config a go tonight and see it looks... I like some of your choices, especially the Yaw on the stick.

Thank you one and all for the profiles and info.
I bought ED yesterday, so it is all very new to me.
I already have the warthog.
So thank you once again.

Thanks. Yeah, I fly quite a bit in FA Off mode and anogue yaw is a must! I don't really understand why everyone bind rudder to digital input... Ideally, you need rudder pedals, then you will be able to bind slew control to lateral and vertical thrust, but without pedals its better to utilize slew as a rudder. Either way, you can always create a toggle that will switch axis mapping for slew control :)

Hello and welcome to the forums. It seems that all of Warthog topics are not maintained anymore, so if you have questions about Warthog usage in ED, you can freely PM me about it. This goes for everyone :) . When I came here, it was major issue how to configure Hog for this game in a way, that will be most comfortable. In the end, I was forced to study aviasim forums and made my own config from scratch using fully modular design. Furthermore, I have some ideas about improvements that I will implement in near future. I accidentally flipped "jettison all cargo switch" and now want to add 5 sec delay till execution and some kind of warning sound :D

using TARGET scripts...

This is specifically RE: loading Net-burst's TARGET profiles, but if anyone else can give me a hand it'd be appreciated!

When I try to compile / run the .tmc file in TARGET Script Editor, I get a compile error on line 4, which line is just <!DOCTYPE html>.

I think I have all the .ttm and .tmh files in the right place, but I'm pretty new to my 'hog and have only spent a handful of hours messing with it.

thanks!

I tried to reply to your PM, but you have full inbox. My scripts are for Target Script Editor, not Target GUI :) . Use it to load script and it will load fine. Also, about absence of optimal throttle on boat switch: it proved counter-productive in combat... I was forced to constantly to switch to full-range, so I removed optimal from binding. I just left it in script, so that anyone who needs it can easily use it.

Thanks for the reply, Net-burst. I think that as a new commenter there are some holds on my PM happening, sorry about that.

I'll try it again when I get home (about to leave work) but I'm pretty sure I tried to load the .tcm in the Script Editor, and got that error. I'll PM you with the specifics and hopefully my newb commenter status will allow me to receive messages by then (I actually have ZERO messages in my inbox, the only message is one that I sent to you...).

I basically tried this variant: Use Keyboard and Mouse in ED + ED's Warthog controller bindings. The problem with #1 (i.e. starting from ED's Warthog bindings) is that it misses a lot of keyboard keys. Therefore, the best of both world is to start with the default Keyboard and Mouse bindings, and then add in Warthog bindings. This can be done either inside the game, or use Notepad. Obviously, there are something that require command or toggles or LEDs that you will eventually have to do in TARGET (i.e. #2), but editing the binding files in Notepad is pretty fast so it is worth the first try. BTW, ED's built-in binding files are in [install directory]\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1001\ControlSchemes, so you can either save yours there, or in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Dont save anything inside [install directory]\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-100[1-5]\ControlSchemes! Game will delete any modifications to install directory on update.

I actually had a question, I've been using the binds OP posted(with a few modifications) for a few weeks now with no issue besides the fact I can't use my keyboard for anything. So if I need to respond to hails the only solution that I've found is to open the menu, switch to KB+M, and then respond, switching back to my HOTAS binds when I need to fly again.

I'm probably just a noob with these sort of things but does anyone else have a solution that allows keyboard use while using this particular T.A.R.G.E.T profile?

Erm... TARGET is not prohibiting you from using keyboard. You only may need to bind some actions on it, if they all are bound to DX keys in profile.

I'll give that a shot! Currently I have nothing bound to my keyboard, everything is on the throttle or stick. Thanks!
