To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

what a nice strawman argument... does not matter how big the space is, when someone is actively looking to crash into you.

[edit]
Also by that very same logic, PvP could not happen, since space is vast so actually hit anything with weapons would be very rare...
If they actively trying to crash into someone it's not gonna work. Simple. That is the point of disabling collisions. To make griefing by that impossible.

Which is probably why players can't restrict the movement of other players by getting in their way while on foot in dock - Frontier foresaw the consequences of giving players the ability to restrict others' movement.

Elite is obviously conceived as a multiplayer simulation, in the age of multiplayer games. With an option to go solo.

Au contraire.

Elite is obviously conceived as a solo game with the added option of multiplayer.

Why?
Because other players are purely optional. There is nothing in game (no mission, no objective, no story) that requires the presence of other players to be able to be completed
Sure, playing in multiplayer (co-op mode in a Private group) can sometimes make things easier. Not always tho. Sometimes it just complicates things.

This. Any demands for Open-only or Open buffs "to make BGS fair" simply demonstrate ignorance of how the BGS works. Therefore, making BGS "fair" can't be the real motivation. Therefore, the real motivation must be something else.

That's arguing in bad faith. It's not a way to be taken seriously or gain agreement.
Careful .. those who assume others are in bad faith, are automatically themselves in bad faith.
Your logic is also flawed:

Any demands for Open-only or Open buffs "to make BGS fair" simply demonstrate ignorance of how the BGS works.
NO, it demonstrates a point of view different from yours, nothing more, nothing less.
Therefore, making BGS "fair" can't be the real motivation.
Woah! If you really want to know the motivation, ask!
Therefore, the real motivation must be something else.
Which is something in your mind, not theirs

maybe because pvp harder than non pvp?
Actually its not.
Ive spent many years doing both PvP and PVE, organising Raids in Everquest back in the day makes PvP look like a day out in Animal Crossing.

But staying with Elite, if your trying to convince folks that taking out a trade ship with a wing of engineered combat ships requires any sort of skill, sure knock yourself out :ROFLMAO:

BGS? the thing specifically designed to be an indirect asynchronous competitive play between platforms, modes and timezones and with a 24h cycle?
I thought the BGS was designed to make the Galaxy 'dynamic', as opposed to the completely static one of E: D's predecessors, and the competitive aspect is solely a player agenda, made possible because the BGS is all too fickle, PP probably being designed more with the asynchronous competitive play in mind.
But what do I know. :) 🤷‍♂️

You're aware that there are other types of PvP activity, rather than just popping trade ships, right?

Tbh I don't even know how you would measure it, but blanket statements don't help.

Many PvP games do it too. It just is disruptive to the core gameplay.
but most other PvP games players are not huge in size, like 15x21x5 meters for a small siderwinder up to 192x111x33 for a Cutter or 168x87x28 for a Corvette... it will take some time to move through one of these ships...

Most PvP games have human sized avatars,
But World of Tanks do appear to have collisions enabled... and tanks a fair bit bigger than a human...
Same with World of Warships, that have even bigger things for us to control...

so when you player representation in the game is small, is far less disruptive to remove player collisions, but as your player representation gets bigger, issues related to the increased size crop up more and more.

I have yet to see any real argument for how this is going to work without breaking the game or allow abuse of the mechanics.

and brings other issues. please tell me how this will work in practice... do we get bouncy castles? we know the physics sometimes is real wonky, just look at players getting jettisoned into space when trying to ride an SRV ontop of a ship... well that is no longer going to happen, when collisions is turned off.. forget about players walking on another players ship, as we have turned of collisions... and on the list goes...

Try to picture the following 2 scenarios

1) the mail slot of a busy station.
Two player owned Cutters get through eachother while entering/exiting the station at the same time.
It's beyond silly. Some may say gamebreaking.

2) A Cutter, havin inside it 3 FDL nicely stack ontop each other.
I might think i attack a sitting duck Cutter, only to have 3 more ships "exiting" from it

1) Silly isn't game breaking.
2) The first real argument.

Does not compute. If this situation would occur, it woud be a PvE instance, so PvP would not happen.
