Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I propose a third mode - Legacy Rebooted. Reset the 3.8 servers back to day one, no discoveries, no PMFs, no fleet carriers, everyone in a starter Sidewinder. It could be fun!

I'd prefer if legacy mode allowed third party server connections and fdev opened the api up and allowed anyone who wanted and had the ability ...to create a third party server system. fdev would host an "official server" but anyone could fire up their own version with augmented rules, system overlays, narrative, etc. This could also be hosted off your own computer (if someone was nice enough to create and distribute such software)...and give players an effective offline option.

Downloading the Galaxy for Offline mode might take a bit of Disk space .......
that's not how this game works.

edit: your client generates the galaxy. It isn't stored elsewhere and you download it or something. The server side database only stores the stats you can associate a cmdr name with (name, timestamp) to a coordinate location that the stellar forge generates that is associated with any given stellar body that it creates. And it only needs to store those for the systems and stellar bodies that have been visited (no empty sets for everything possible). There are certain overrides/overlays to certain systems ...but those are few and far between.

Overall, the server side of things is likely not that big of a database in terms of the current state storage needed. It's not clear what kind of transaction log is kept etc...but that kind of stuff isn't strictly necessary for the game.

So console players are basically getting 6 days notice for what is pretty much the end of the console profile copy process in its current form?
What happened to the promise that this process would be around "for the foreseeable future" and that "plenty of notice would be given" before it would be withdrawn?

Heck, even outside of transfers it's really short. The devs for EDSM, Inara, EDDB, Jegin, etc, etc, now have 6 days to figure out how to either filter out the "Legacy" data, or somehow sensibly store both copies, and get their sites updated for it.

We are in touch with third party tool developers to help with this transition and answer those sorts of questions.

So with giving console players less than a week notice that you're ending full transfers, and it takes a week to decommission a fleet carrier, so CMDR's who transfer now just lose 5+ billion credits?!?
This is the exact problem I'm running into. I was able to transfer 99% of my bank account off and sell off the modules, but the decommission time is 7.5 days. It's like they did this on purpose.

I just want to see if I get an actual response first.

Yeah but IIRC, there won't be "the" carrier, but two carriers, one in each universe, and if a player stays in one universe, the clone of their carrier will just end up being abandoned clutter in the opposite universe.
Exactly. The other carrier will be there should I decide [shiver] to ever log back into 3.8.

Well, if I may politely ask that "there" be an empty system (in the Bubble, out of the Bubble, whichever), that sure would be swell. Fleet Carriers have destroyed the system map, but if all the unused carriers were moved to uninhabited systems, then something good can come out of this "Legacy Mode".

Very unfortunate for console players as they will no longer be able to participate in BGS play or CG play going forward... it's a real shame that those versions for all intents and purposes are absolutely abandoned now.

I realise the on-foot stuff isn't going to happen on console, they can't run it fair enough but is there no way that Consoles could be brought up to Horizons 4.0? It's a shame if we lose our console player base entirely.
"Frontier Developments - Fragmenting its player base since May 2021". They can feel free to use it as a new tag line in any of their promotional advertisements.

Well... as you asked nicely... name the system and I'll move mine, so long as it's not a lifetime to jump to.

I am actually surprised by all the complaining going on. FDev is doing something that not only did I ever expect but something I never saw any other live service dev do: provide a copy of the game's setting for free so that players who don't like the (apparently big) changes coming to the game can choose to opt-out and continue to play the game the way they liked it. This is the opposite of what the doomsayers have been saying: instead of shutting the server down, FDev is adding an entirely new server!

And people still find a reason to complain....
