Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

Sounds nice, but is definitely not the reason for the galaxy split. The Kingfisher incident tells me FD is going to blow up the bubble in four days and leve 3.8ers with the rubble...

No it isn't the reason for the current split. The current split basically overrides one of the objections that previously existed to FD doing this.

The point is there is a group of PvPers who state that the BGS and other activities should be open only. Powerplay, community goals, etc. Anything where anything can be competitive should be open only, because in their minds the only real competition is via PvP. PvE competition isn't real competition and somehow not right or cheating. They complain about how people can work the BGS (or powerplay, or do CGs) from the safety of PG/solo, because it means they can't pew-pew them to "win".

So, if FD said, here you go, your own separate open only server, your own BGS, your own powerplay, your own CGs, go to it!

And they should be happy right? Right?

Mainly i'd just love FD to do it and wait for the caterwauling how hardly anyone plays on this server and open is empty and no point doing anything and nobody to shoot.
I have to say though: CGs (and Powerplay by association) would certainly be more uncertain and more interesting if there were more contra forces- Open only is a quick and dirty 'fix' to that (since its really defining an ad hoc arena for players)- at the very least I'd love FD to make NPCs in Legacy have full engineering and make the galaxy properly hostile.

If as developer you were planing on shutting down the game, than you wouldn't bother with next-gen console.
But you would instead create a legacy version as a first step for Offline version of the game. And the timing is perfect. We are 3 weeks away from 8 year mark. This is exactly when i would start preparing Offline version of the game.

How long has it been since they added a new ship, in a space ship game? EvE Online as example have over 400 ships and keeps on adding new.
Their plan for 2023, is just to re-do whats already in the game. We could be seeing the first signs of the end. They will probably run with a Narrative for the last 2 years, to finish off their promissed 10 years, and than Offline. Braben is gone, and with him the dream of keeping this game going.
Yep.

I'm pretty sure many NPC ships are already engineered, while sure many of them are as soft as butter and I've been attacked by pirates that didn't even have shields, but on the flip side, you come across particularly high ranked and mission related NPCs that are as tough as nails!

They already cheat is many ways, so i don't think we need to give NPCs any more help!

For example, they're absolute bullet sponges in CZs, can fight on at 0% hull and powerplant health, seemingly never run out of weapon energy or ammunition and if you seriously damage a named NPC but they manage to jump away, when you find them again, they'll be magically back to 100% hull like the previous fight never happened!! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚ .

About the only change I want to make to NPCs is to stop ship launched fighter crew taking half your combat XP, even after they hit max rank, while similarly I wish flying in a wing or multi crew didn't take some of your combat XP also, they should increase it to encourage players to fly together! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ˜€πŸ€˜

So, I caved in and decided to try Odyssey through GeForce Now on Xbox and it works surprisingly well. The graphics are pretty bad though, some of the text is hard to read, but overall everything is fairly responsive. So now my question in regards to next week's update. I did a console profile transfer in September and just last night accessed that profile with Odyssey. Since September I have been playing my Xbox profile off/on, so when this split comes am I going to have three profiles? My current Odyssey commander, the mirror of the Odyssey commander in 3.8, and my Xbox profile with the little bit of progress since September?

While many NPCs have engineering, there are precious few on a level to a player, and no NPC has the full gamut of engineering players can do.

For example, if FD varied NPC wings and randofied engineering it would make life more interesting because currently I know exactly what NPCs rock and provide interest for combat players.

Does this whole Legacy/Live account situation mean that I can potentially introduce yet another Pilot's Federation Representative Corpswoman to my narrative without affecting the progress of my recent console-to-PC transfer of the star of The Nain Logs?

You don't go backwards as a PC player, only if you're a console player who transfers now, then plays on console for a bit before coming to the PC CMDR.
Which makes total sense due to the fact that they are now two separate accounts, a point you are not stating clearly. It's like this; if I work on a document, make a back up to another drive, and continue to work on it, then my HD dies and go to the back up, any progress on the document since that back up would be lost.

When it comes to the console transfer, which account you choose to take forward is your own decision but one account will deviate from the other no matter if it's the console or PC.

Just to leave no doubt; the console to pc process duplicates the console account to a new PC account that is now completely separate from the initial console account.

Does Odyssey Geforce Now still have all the standard GFX settings that you do on a standard PC copy? I guess it does as it's just a remote PC, right. Well you might want to turn FSR off, it's turn on by default and makes the text blurry and the graphics subpar.

Unless they decide to/can spend €2,000 on PC that can run Odyssey/"Live" mode, or even want to play on PC, or "God" forbid Frontier shock us all and release the game in full on next gen consoles, indeed yes I believe those carriers will sit there doing nothing until they're either "rescued" by their owners or their upkeep runs out and they're decommissioned! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ©²πŸ˜€πŸ€˜
I am pretty sure you don't need a €2000 PC to run Horizons 4.0.

When people are saying 4000 series graphics cards are struggling to do so, it seems you need one to run it well!

Not that I've any interest in PC gaming, there must be a big reason many people say their PCs won't run it, lack of expensive parts seems to be the primary reason why! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ˜€πŸ€˜

I've run Odyssey from the alpha to U13 on an RX470 and an Athlon X4 860K and the space game ran just like Horizons (all set on High), while the on foot game went from slideshow to decent throughout the updates (but I play casually, so none of my gear has ever been top tier).
In practical terms, the GPU was barely above the minimum spec, and the CPU barely below (basically, just like swimming with one nostril above water and one below).

Some people will cling to any excuse to complain*. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

*there are also those who are able to provide solid and sensible arguments.

Depends on if you want it to run or to run well. Ryzen 7 5800X / RTX 2060S / 16β€―GB RAM here, and I see a noticeable performance hit between Horizons 3.8 and Horizons 4.0.

Go ahead and sacrifice all of your console progress into the aether rather than using a free process to transfer for a later time, that'll show Frontier.

I'm a console player. Neither do I have or want to have PCs in my living room, where we use to play. Console players do have another rig, and I will definitely not change my (life-, play-) style for FDev. If they let ED die on console, ED is dead to me, it's that simple.

"...it will be reintroduced in Q1 next year.

The version of the process that we reintroduce will not be as comprehensive as before and will only copy the most essential profile data related to player progression."

I take it this is the situation you are facing right now?

If so, I think StuartGT's suggestion is probably the best, start the FC carrier decomissioning process and talk to Frontier about crediting you the FC balance once complete to your PC account. The FC part is just credits at the end of the day, it's the progress/skins etc.. that's most important to bring over.

@Bruce G Would the above be a possible remedy to the situation this CMDR and others are in, regarding the time-frame to decommission Fleet Carriers?
