Update on Communication

Wow, this merry-go-round never stops! I'd reiterate again that if you're on console (as I am) and not interested in getting a PC to play EDO then your/our options are to enjoy EDH if you still can, or find something else to play. The past 7 months have shown that FDEV is not influenced by our begging, pleading, threats to quit, or any other appeals. Odyssey is a paid expansion and, as with any business, if they want our money they're going to let us know!

For me personally, the ball is in their court. I'm not spending money on ARX only because I go through spurts where I'll play EDH for a while and then I move on for a bit to something else and then come back again for a bit. If they want me to shell out $50 they're going to have to give me something worth buying. If they don't, well here's hoping that StarField is more substance than hype and that the Switch version of NMS is multiplayer so I can play it together with my son.

TLDR: Console CMDRS, FDEV drinks your tears and doesn't care about your feelings. If they want your money they're going to let you know. Enjoy EDH if you can or move on to something else if you can't.

Personally, if you'd have asked me 4 years ago what I'd have wanted I'd have gone for atmospheric worlds (as we have) but with SRV gameplay being fleshed out much more than it is. The whole of Odyssey has a feeling of someone biting off more than they could chew and now here we are with this added dimension of being on foot, which still doesn't seem to mesh together fully yet (sphere of combat, anyone?).

I'll quite happily run round settlements shooting rockets into the face of anything that has one or collecting stuff on far flung places to go build or sell things, but I could do that in other games. No other game I've played does what ED Horizons does in terms of flying a ship or even bouncing an armed moon buggy into/over craters for that matter and I don't think anyone should get particularly worried about something that doesn't build on that.
Absolutely and resounding YES to this.

Maybe you touch on something that bothered me since the release without being able to put my finger on it - Elite Feet feels merely like a different camera angle of the SRV (and simplified at that of course, because the SRV takes some skill and practice to master, unlike "holding forward/W" to walk forwards). EDO on-foot feels in a way claustrophobic to me, because the environments are so limited in scope and frequency: you only need feet to visit the (small, single room) concourses, settlements are about 500m x 500m in size max, and to get out of the SRV/ship to pick up a mat/good at POIs, or scan a plant. That's pretty much it - unlike ships where the scope of the area of meaningful gameplay content is just so much bigger (in and around stations, around planets, SC, asteroid rings & belts, USS's of various types), and for planets we already have the SRV. And while you can of course walk right around an entire planet, it's something you can do faster (and more enjoyably so) in the SRV already, while scooping raw mats along the way.

The fact that EDO is exclusively bringing on-foot gameplay to the game without adding anything at all to the ship gameplay (apart from admittedly nice looking sunsets/skyboxes) is the most disappointing aspect for me. Not even a single new ship, or gameplay loop(s) - including upgraded Horizons experiences such as more detailed EDH settlements - that entices players who don't much care for Elite Feet to purchase the DLC, unless you really, really like aforementioned sunsets.

Well said. Sometimes it's best to just quit in life - in terms of the continued bemoaning, players like yourself are better served by playing something else, and I really do mean that in a positive way, not a dismissive way.

I've done my fair share of bemoaning, that's for sure! But, I recognized that it didn't change anything other than making me bitter towards EDH. A little change in mindset and I've spent that last two weeks in EDH. I think we look at the expansion as something better, which in some ways it may be, but it's not like EDH is bad. I also realized there was a lot in EDH that I hadn't done or didn't know, so there's still some discovery there. I have this sneaking suspicion though that when/if EDO is released on console there are going to be a lot of disappointed CMDRS saying "is this it?".

Honestly, if I was on console, I would've begrudgingly interpreted the ongoing non statements from Frontier as a "probably not gonna happen" after all these months and moved on, or if I was that desperate to play EDO just get a PC (not that I would recommend this as EDO isn't worth a major expense like that even after all the patching done imo), instead of going on "are we there yet" like kids on the backseat. It's really starting to grate at this point.
As someone who just moved from PS5 to PC … yeh, I probably wouldn’t do it for EDO alone. I went for a fairly meaty spec (12th Gen i7, 32GB RAM, RTX3070) and get 60FPS at 4K/Ultra with Bloom/Amibent Occlusion off and AA down to FX rather than SM … in space … on foot, it’s a little sketchy to keep up (50-60) so I dropped to 1440 which manages a steady 60FPS in all situations fine. But that’s a lotta power to throw at the problem …

Gameplay wise … I enjoy the on-foot stuff a lot more than I was expecting to - and the challenge is a decent one - but progression. Is far too slow. I only got a semi-decent start (G2 engineering) thanks to some help from a kindly squadron mate but I have no idea when I will ever get the mats required for further engineering as the grind is just crazy!

I think all your points are right there mate - a lot of people who got it initially were of the "is this it" mindset and I can understand why. It is what you make of it ofc, but all gamers are different and I worry there will be immense disappointment if it gets to consoles.

But it was reasonable imho to nag a bit about its console release in the early period after it was postponed (trying to choose words wisely!), but going on the same way for 9 months or however long it has been, will only serve to annoy everyone really, whichever side of the debate they fall on.

Which is a shame, as it's divisive at the very least, and creates resentment frankly. It's fine to ask every so often, I don't think anyone can begrudge that; but the constant 'kids in the back seat' style of asking is grinding on people I think.

Kudos to you mate for being a realistic person as a console player, and I think the huge majority of consolers are tbh. Not meant in a condescending way as several of my game friends are console users, and the cross play argument is a valid one too - one that as a pc player I support. But sadly I think it must be some sticking point, perhaps a legal one, and until someone shifts it sadly isn't going to happen - at least until they tell us (ironic lols!)

Cheers mate.

I haven't played much EDO, but I had my first legs at a guardian site with the sun low over the horizon. It was a great moment and I really enjoyed running around the site. I'd be inclined to say that if for nothing else, this made it worth adding to the game. It also seems a logical step in realizing the game as envisioned by Brebus.

Sure I also wish for more lore, game play mechanics, less grind, etc, but at least the game doesn't appear dead, and it appears to advance step by step. I sincerely hope they get EDO under control and add VR and console support too.

I always thought that EDO would never run on my Xbox one so I upgraded to the series X .
I don't think EDO will come to consoles for a long while , if at all ( I had thought just before Starfield dropped ) , but now I don't think they can .
And the silence is because they don't want more bad news in one year ?? In my opinion .
Yes the general shout for console news is much like the general shout for info since Christmas .
Yes it's annoying for some , but mostly I was after "what is optimised ??" A simple yet elusive question that still hasnt received any answer .
Fdev with their "top 20 issues" made it look that you have to shout out long and hard to get answers . And when some did this with questions about consoles they ignored them at first which riled up some and it got antsy then when feelings were running high some answers or questions took on other meanings and we became split PC and consoles . Each wanted their issues to be tops .
In the end I gave up, Fdev have managed to make me not care about EDO . Is it doomed ? nope , not by a long shot . It may be a chapter has finished and the hero goes on after he has lost his side kicks or best mates . But the game will still be there .

I don't want to knock the gameplay too much... sneaking around in settlements can be fun but... this is the kind of stuff I've done two decades ago in MGS1 on my Playstation, and the stealth mechanics in that were a fair bit more sophisticated (you got a proper sniper rifle for starters... claymores to set in strategic spots, etc. etc.) - I never really expected (by that I mean, wanted) that sort of stuff in a game about flying spaceships really, but it is what FDev deemed like a good idea so... yeah.

To bring my favourite comparison space game (I own NMS as well but that leaves me cold, even though it's a very competent game nonetheless), X4, into the mix once more - it has space legs (stations only, and ship interiors in a very basic but still very immersive way, and actual EVA with relevant gameplay attached) - not the most sophisticated stuff and no FPS/gunplay at all, and it firmly sits in the background as a 'nice-to-have', but what I believe at this stage is I think Frontier made a mistake pushing the whole Elite-Feet aspect as the USP for this particular DLC.

Again I appreciate that others like it, I don't mind it as such, but that's not really what I hoped for when FDev announced this DLC, the biggest one in half a decade, even though I tried to keep an open mind about it all the same, because new content for my favourite game is a good thing, right? Well.. it doesn't really work all that well so not sure about that anymore.

PS - as for the slow progress... I can only advise you to take your time, because once you're done, there's nothing left. You gather mats to engineer to improve your stuff, to gather mats better/more efficiently. It really does feel like a pointless hamsterwheel - unless you can somehow brush over it through roleplay and/or BGS (even though ship missions are much more effective with the latter), or treat it like minigames in a theme park - a nice little distraction but not much else. My motivation to keep playing (certainly the on-foot stuff, ships not so much as that is a very solid foundation and hasn't changed) has fallen off a cliff since, and there's no new content in sight (FC interiors are still about 3-4bn credits out of reach for me) by the looks of things.

There are so many ways to see this, but I often think of the forum as storm in a teacup.. :)

We work ourselves up into a frenzy over basically nothing.. Remember a few years back, when FDev concentrated on upcoming FCs and a future upcoming DLC? We had no galnet, no CGs, communication blackout, etc.. At least this time around we have it better!

And much as I dislike it, I think staying silent is in the end probably the best strategy. Just look at the latest outcry in the SC society.. If I've understood correctly they changed the roadmap and how it works, and now the community is on fire! Sounds familiar.. :)

And that for a game that isn't even published, and something more like an alpha test trying different things to see what sticks.. To me it appears completely normal that they'll have to change things as they develop them and realize that they need to do things differently or add other bits and bobs.

And of course there are setbacks, you went down a programming cul de sac and it didn't work, so you have to backtrack and get delayed, or something went wrong and your fps are no longer where you want them on all machines, that could be easy or a devil of a thing to figure out.

If you say nothing then it's an outrage for one reason or other, and if you do say something and it needs changing then you're a liar and possibly worse.. Thorny problem for a game company!

Not gonna lie, this was precisely my reaction when I booted up the game in May last year. WYSIWYG and nothing more. I hoped for stuff to do at Thargoid/Guardian sites, or the Horizons settlements, but nope. 100% ring-fenced content.

Sorry for being so obnoxious now, but I wish people would not just compare to Scam C... that other space game.. when there are are others like X4 which do still play things 'by the book' i.e. release a feature complete game, support it to the extent it's now rock solid and stable, and release DLC at fair prices that expand the game in a meaningful way. It's quite refreshing I have to say, and Egosoft are a much smaller outfit as well. They're already guaranteed my money once the new DLC releases in the next weeks/months as a result.

And about CIG changing strategy... I've watched Obsidian Ant's video about it yesterday (I only vaguely follow SC, mostly for the gossip at this stage) and it's pretty rich calling clearly (and from what I gather, rightfully so) disgruntled customers "noisy". But players get the developer they deserve and support at the end of the day.
