Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I've been figuring this game a bit, reading tutorials and watching videos mostly. I've owned the game since it first came out, never really had the chance to play it properly. And now events in my life kinda have me want to play calmer games. I figured ED's exploration and trading mechanics can keep me invested in something without having to risk getting too wound up from combat.

Indeed. You could trade like a loon until your eyes fall out or embark on a non-stop, never ending exploration extravaganza; forge your own path, to coin a phrase.

Or mine like the crew from "Armageddon" and amass so much money you could become an FC salesman.

What am I up to? Well I got my Corvette last night - finally! - so this evening will be heading off back up to Colonia in the Cutter (then ship the Corvette and my Clipper up to myself, as can't get them locally). No idea how many jumps the Cutter will need to make the trip - have only done it in an Asp-S and an Asp-X previously. Will strip it back to D rated modules/empty slots and fit a class 8 fuel scoop. Have a Guardian FSD booster and an engineered FSD but still think it's going to be a very long haul... Starting in about an hour. Plan then is to stay put in Colonia. Had to hang around to pick up a Corvette first as can't get one up there. Conscious that it won't be cheap (over 1bn cr, I fear) to ship that and a Clipper all that way, but only way I could see to get myself and those three ships up there. Already have various smaller ships there. Fun to have a specific project to follow, gives my gameplay some focus.

At the moment Mat Farming. been fighting to many npc and matting the ammo back Completly forgot to check the mat resources until it was almost nearly too late. :)

Two suns : anyone want a sun tan.

Installed EDDiscovery and loving it. It works really well on a second screeen while exploring. My main interest was valuing the exploration data I was returning with. Not quite enough for making double Elite as it turned out. Currently at 83% Pioneer. Feels like a bad miss.

EDIT

Did I mention I'm currently on a 230,000 ls trip. Yawn. Engineer unlocking mission, didn't see it coming. Thanks for your help @Para Handy.

I've got a Corvette and a Krait MKII stationed in Colonia already. I flew the Krait out there and then shipped the Corvette. I recouped the transfer fee later, when I got back to the bubble, by doing some mining. That was quite a while ago. I built myself a second Corvette and another Krait to have in the bubble, and I built a long-jump Anaconda to use the Neutron Highway. My idea was to make it easier to go back and forth whenever I felt like it.

But so far I haven't gone back. It's been on my mind though. Soon, perhaps :)

Anyway, enjoy your trip out there. I made my first journey in a T6 with 30-something LY jump range. I guess it was a long trip, but all I remember is enjoying it :)

At the moment I'm in the beta goofing around with a Carrier. I named it "Credit Flush". I told it to jump to another system as a test, and so now I have to wait 15 minutes until it actually jumps. Even though it's just 30LY away in this case. Meh.

I want to test the thing out a bit while in beta to decide if it's now worth having one. I'd kinda like to take one out to "my" system, out near Colonia, and base myself there for a while. I call it "my" system because I have first-discovered and first-mapped on all the bodies, and there is an earthlike world and a water world there. My CMDR will probably retire there one day :)

Yes on my one previous trip I flew up in an Asp-S and back in an Asp-X (partly to try them against one another). Novelty factor (never been that far before) and the fact that the two legs combined netted me Elite explorer gave me many reasons to love the trip, as I treated it as dipping my toe in proper exploration rather than just a journey. This one might feel a bit more grindy (Cutter isn't my first choice for jump range!), but I hope not as I do like exploration and am deliberately taking both fighter hangar and SRV bay with me, despite otherwise stripping the ship back. I have my Asp-S (explorer), plus a Python (future miner), a MkIII Cobra (mats gathering), a T6 (just my favourite ship, use it when I want to!) and a T9 (trader - funded the other Colonia ships!) up at Colonia already (bought and outfitted during my last stay), so will add a Krait to that on arrival and have a fun fleet, particularly once the Clipper and Corvette arrive. Tried to plan ships and Engineer pinned blueprints etc around this move being my final one, at least for a long while. Hopefully have thought of everything, this time, as any future long trips I'd rather head further out than back in. Haven't done Beagle Point, either, so that's now high up the list. Like your long-range Anaconda idea. I stripped mine back to hull to outfit the Corvette last night and have left it in the Bubble. Need a plan for it at some point, that might be it.

Interested to hear your views on Carriers. I can't quite afford one, even if I cashed out, and from what I have read I wouldn't get enough use out of it to justify the cost, but am really excited for when they start popping up in the real world and we can all see them knocking about. Should add an interesting layer of gameplay. So I love the project even if I'm not participating. Fantastic picture!! And cool ship.

And in an extreme bout of laziness, in light of my post above - I never did get around to mining, but having seen the numbers other are pulling (and wanting to experience all gameplay) I plan to start mining at Colonia. I have a Python ready for the job (it's being stood down from armed trader role once the Cutter arrives). So if anyone has a mining build for a Python they'd like to post, I'd love it... No idea what sort of mining to start with, or whether it's any good up at Colonia, but I mapped some worlds with various hotspots last time I was up there and the Python seems a good ship for it, so will give it a go. Any builds or tips for Python mining at Colonia welcome.

There are a number of guides on YouTube etc. It depends a lot on what you have available/want to do in terms of engineering etc and what type of mining you want to do.

Edit: Here is a typical starter unengineered build for laser mining.

Yes thanks I have seen many but there seem to be so many conflicting opinions that I was hoping someone I trust could point me at one. YouTube and Facebook didn't lead me to any consensus at all. In terms of which sort of mining, I don't know which is which but the one which appeals most is the one using hotspots which show up in planetary rings when you surface map them. In terms of what I have available I have a Python, effectively unlimited budget and have all the engineers unlocked to G5 (although obviously am limited by pinned blueprints). It's only a plan for my early days at Colonia as it's my biggest missing game element at the moment. I'll trial and error it if noone has a handy build. All part of the fun.

I put an unengineered starter build for laser mining in the edit of my previous post. All forms of (relevant) mining use ring hotspots. Laser mining benefits from overlapping hotspots, that is why everybody is in Borann at the moment because of the triple overlapping LTD hotspot.

A starter engineered laser mining build would look something like this.

Edit: Then you have personalised builds that are going to depend on personal preferences, mining technique, etc. for those of us who are particularly crazy (like myself). This is my mining Python. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is tailored to my personal mining preferences and ability to streamline my own mining process and maximise my mining rate. I also have a 5A fuel scoop and size 5 FSD booster lying around in a nearby system for the times when the high-sell station is out of my operative range.

For reference. I do not like that the PP is too heavily engineered (grade 2 overcharged would have sufficed) and I can live without the shield boosters. Otherwise it is very reminiscent of my ship apart from the collector/prospector distribution and that I threw out the fuel scoop for the reasons mentioned above. I remember suggesting the core mining equipment in the stream where he built it.

Edit: Also, 6 collectors are too few to reliably keep up with three lasers, at least for me. Sure, there are times when my 7th collector sits back and does nothing, but it is participating in collection at least every second asteroid or so.

That's incredibly kind, thank you. I'll build up my Python along the lines of the first, unengineered build, then add in what engineering I can between my pinned blueprints from the Bubble, plus what the Colonia engineers can offer (don't know whether they have anything mining-specific up at Colonia, will check on arrival). Then head out to some rings and give it a bash - I have marked a few good planets with good rings on an earlier exploration run. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.

(And your personal build reminds me just how far advanced some players' ships are - once you get into Gauss territory I just think 'magic'. Inspirational stuff.)

I will be sure to look him up, thank you for the tip - I basically don't use any extra-game resources (aside from the odd daft question on this forum!) so tend to miss that sort of thing.

Like a German medical doctor (and comedian) once said, the liver grows with its tasks.

Just start with any ship in any mining build. You can then see how that ship fits to your mining style and capabilities, where you will need a little bit more and where you can safely use a bit less. For me personally
  • it has to be a Lakon or a Krait. Nothing else has the cockpit visibility I want
  • I don't want to spend hours (or even one hour) in a ring, continously mining, therefore I don't need a T-9 (or T-10)
  • I prefer explody (core) mining over laser mining
  • especially after the last balancing run, low loads have a better chance of meeting high payouts
So, my (core) mining ship is a DBX. 3 cores to fill her up, and less than one hour round trip per run. I haven't built or used a laser mining ship since I last unlocked Selene, and that was something like 3 years ago.

---

Edit: Correction. I did use a laser mining Krait Mk.II in the last beta, just to check how easy/difficult it would be to mine Tritium. But I didn't invest any effort in the build, just grabbed what was locally available.

Thank you very much, interesting food for thought. I'll start with the Python as that's what I have, but take your point on visibility. And isn't that the chap who sends clowns into hospitals to cheer up sick kids? Read a piece on him a while back.
