Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I recently noticed I was was playing in 1600 resolution rather than 1920 as I switched from SMAA to FXAA anti-alaising. The latter really makes a difference.
Hmm. I'm using SMAA. I might try FXAA and note the effect (y)

I'm about to jump to Nervir where there is, apparently, an abandoned settlement called "Crowther's Rest". I shall explore this then look at the markets again - prices are a little low for some stuff at the moment.

Bought a joystick. I had a Microsoft Sidewinder Standard in the '90s but haven't had one since then. I had a short list of criteria in mind:

  • sturdy construction
  • does not look like an android's personal massage device
  • a lot of hats
Enter CH Products Fighterstick USB. So far this is exactly what I imagined it'd be. Bonus points for the control software being really thorough, even allowing scripting for live sensor data manipulation. I think I'll buy the rest of the set from next salary.

I also got to re-enter all bindings as the game had forgotten them overnight. Thanks to @Para Handy for writing a forum post in 2019 mentioning the location of the preset file - now I have a backup!

Really good choice - I have used the Fighterstick for years. People moan about no twist - no need for that*; people moan about it not having hall-effect sensors - not a problem, the pots seem good enough quality; people moan about it being 8-bit - so what, you really need more than 256 point accuracy? Seriously great piece of kit, built like a brick outhouse with industrial grade switches and no stupid cables breaking with use.

I have used CHPro for many years in flight sims - rudder pedals and yoke are really old and still work with no issues. I also have the CHPro Throttle and for me this is the best throttle for Elite - stacks of HAT switches and buttons plus an analogue mini-stick for thrusters (that needs a good deadzone as there is just a small throw).

* As regards yaw - I have the pinky button on the Fighterstick set as a push-to-hold for "Yaw-to-Roll" - so when held in the x-axis produces yaw rather than roll - it is amazingly easy to get used to and stops me using my pedals in Elite as that was messing with my flight co-ordination in flight sims. (I also set fore and aft on the Mitre HAT [thumb hat] to give stepped yaw right and left - gives big digital steps in yaw rather than the precise analogue from the x-axis.)

Finally, can I point you to this bindings renaming and backing-up post - it will save you no end of grief if you do the renaming:

Congratulations on your stick, hopefully you will have many years of fun with it.

Did you look at the Logitech Extreme 3D pro? For a budget stick, it's pretty impressive although temporarily out of stock on Amazon.

I have one gathering dust in my junk-box, got it to try having twist axis for combat - found it horrible compared to the CHPro Fighterstick - if it is your only stick, fine, it works (until the twist axis pot gives out) but seriously it is even worse than the T16000M and that is saying something.

any manufactured/encoded mats to collect?

Hmm.
Finished at the Guardian sites for now, jumping back to San To to pick up the Python and do the Fujin tea run for Broo. 14 jumps, and there's the problem. Every jump, when I drop into the next system, the star's exclusion zone is taking up to 5 seconds to appear. Considering I'm in the DBX and really need to get crack on with the scooping it's very annoying and slowing me down.

Whoops, too close, drop out! Grrr.

Well, all this moaning about San Tu getting flipped, it's empty, nobody home. :(

Quoting myself now like an egomaniac but I should've also pointed out that I use Alt-Z for taking screengrabs via NVIDIA because F10 stopped working for me a while back.
AFAIK, SMAA is supposed to be better quality than FXAA, but takes more time to process (Less fps).
Have you started out on your journey into the void yet?
I'm currently enjoying the balmy weather on this beauty! I stuffed one of the molluscs down a steam tube and I'm just wating for the timer to ping!

Just hit an area where I'm coming across too many unscoopables. Third jump made without a scoop. Checked the GalMap and have seen an M-Type nearby. Astrogation giving me lemons again! There's a Y type on my route further up. Don't think I've seen one of those, so I'll take note and replot to it when I'm refueled.

Maybe I used to have it this way before something randomly messed with my setup but switching to FXAA was like Roddy Piper putting on the sunglasses. So much better. Even in the menu screens. Though I know at least part of the damage was due to my tinkering around this week.

What ship is that, again? It kinda looks like a little insect.

And yes, I have Just left. I'm right behind you!
