Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Found a large container on a planet. Used the arc cutter to get into it and open some crates contained therein. Filched the goods - some things called "hush" and "infinity". It appears most of the stuff I just scavanged is illegal so my Odyssey adventure could get interesting.

Still, I learned how to use the arc cutter today. And how to get stuff from my backpack into my SRV inventory. I also made 500k from carto so when I get blown up by the narcs, I'll be OK on rebuy and be able to clear my name.

O-Ren Ishii's such a scamp.

Did you see that someone found a Thargoid Sensor on the ground in Odyssey? Amazing how it looks up close:

It's from this video, by CMDRs Will and Kate. They make some interesting vids.

The first 3 minutes convinced me this is not the game for me.
I hear you.

For me, though, I'm quite looking forward to it; it will provide a greater bariety of "stuff" to do.

However, they do need to sort some stuff out and the release of 19th May feels somewhat ambitious:
  • The bio scanner may still be there, albeit changed
  • The gal- and sys-maps need streamling
  • Performance needs a great deal of optimisation
  • Getting stuck on objects needs to be sorted
  • Suit night vision
These are just the few things I can think of off the top of my head - I'm sure other CMDRs have stuff they'd like to see.

PS I'm trying to place the accent of the lass in the video

I might agree with you if that was all there was to the game, but this new stuff is just additional. Planetary crash sites and stuff have been in need of some refurbishing for some time. I'm glad to see new stuff added there. And none of it is mandatory, nor will it interfere with anything I currently do in the game. It's just more options for stuff to do.

I'm not much for FPS gameplay, myself, but from what I've experienced in the alpha it's not that bad, and most of it can be avoided anyway. It IS cool to be on foot, though, just for the feel of it. You get a great sense of scale. And I do like stealth gameplay, so I might lean toward sneaky missions which require no combat. More likely I'll just go exploring :)

I'm mostly looking forward to the graphics changes, planetary vistas are going to be quite exceptional, and I will be able to fill my hard drive with amazing screenshots that my wife won't care about! :p

Hehe. I have TBs of space on my storage drive just itching for screenshots :D I wonder what high-res ones will look like? Haven't tried that yet!

I'm also looking forward to phase 4 when I can walk around (outside) my Beluga just to get a feel for the size. And I need to get underneath my 'Vette as there's strange plinking noise of something coming loose. I need to lock it down and get it tight.

This frame from that video shows why I am not too happy about this "space legs" expansion:

I seriously couldn't play a game which involves that. I can pretend that destroying pirate ships leaves the scum in an escape capsule, I can't pretend that I would actually take a human life. Just that image in the video gave me a physical feeling of revulsion in my gut.

I really hope that GFX card supply improves soon as I think I will be spending a lot more time in MSFS.

I suppose it does depict a certain degree of violence that may be construed as gratuitous. In my opinion though, they are trying to do the same to you so it's sort of self-preservation.

At least it's not the hyper adrenaline, over-caffeinated getsomegetsome violence of ludicrous gibs in ROTT (original version).

Does this depiction of death need to be in ED though? It's an interesting question and thought provoking.

So, in the far future of the 4th millennium, the accepted practice when you discover the precious archaeological artifacts of a lost civilisation from over a million years ago is to deploy your automatic weapons and blast things to pieces so that fragments of it can fit into your cargo hold.

I'm glad you've said that, it's roughly where I am. I have also extended myself the escape-pod interpretation of ship-explosion. I'm not saying I'm not going to go popping bullets into npcs, I'm just not interested in shooting at pretend people. Hopefully FD don't forget to keep it interesting for those of us in a seat.

Good luck with that. I don't see the situation improving until at least the crypto-currency bubble bursts. The manufacturers seem to be doing their best to limit the scalpers and the miners, but it's a continuous arms race. From what i can tell, you need to be persistent and lucky to get your next card.

I'm well aware that i might be holding an 'unorthdox' viewpoint, and i'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, a lot of people have done a lot of intricate work to achieve what has been shown so far, kudos to them.

I don't think there is any dispute about that.
For me, the idea of travelling 'theoretical' xly, in other words multimega million miles, in a space, time and environment that (in all probability) is busy trying to kill me in any way it can, in order to pose against the skyline and 'off some rando', is ludicrous. I haven't seen very much of the other content, and i obviously don't know what i'm talking about when it comes to the nitty gritty of what's on offer,
If only the 'science wand' on his back served any other function than what appears to be the taking of life, i would perhaps be more inclined to take part. As it is, i must confine myself to the outer edges of the galaxy and content mysef with the knowlege that it's 'only' a game and that ultimately my opinion doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
Edited twice, once for linguistic clarity and once to inform you of the fact. :giggle:

Just got back to the bubble after a few months in the black on the far side of Colonia. I decided to celebrate my return by adding a new ship to the fleet. Gotta spend some of that Universal Cartographics money, right?

Back in November I bought a couple of Stygian paint jobs in the Black Friday sale and for some reason I bought one for the Mamba. I have no idea why ... might have been space-madness I suppose... because I didn't own a Mamba.

But I do now. Welcome to the fold "Heliotrope".

I hear Mambas are quite fun fitted with a big beam laser and a bunch of frag cannons so that's what I've done. Outfitting finished, now on to the engineering!

Well, as I don't have the Odessey Alpha and my GPU is unlikely to cut the mustard (GTX 660) for the full release, I have been reading the comments with a detached interest. It looks great in some respects, but there's a lot of work to be done still, by the looks of it.

Anyway, tonight I bought a Viper MkIV, kitted it out and went looking for death (I figured it would be cheaper than dying in a python).
Not sure why I have to set fire groups for turrets when they just go off anyway and it's irritating that you can't stop them when they overheat the ship system.

Or I'm doing something wrong probably. I'd post my load out, but the 'media' button above are greyed out.

But it was such a thrill to be interdicted and the watch the lawless pirate's porcine squeal as I notched up my first bounty!!

Well 'ard, me.

The MkIV is a marvellous little ship! Engineer the thrusters though, to get the most out of it; it has some exceptional lateral / vertical thrust power, which is well handy for moving in ways that the ne’er-do-wells can’t anticipate or match :) It‘s also capable of taking a good deal of punishment, with some reinforcement modules in there.

I’d not bother with turrets on the Viper :) It’s a small ship that is perfect for “time on target” practice, and is really designed to work with gimbals / fixed weapons, in my opinion.

The MkIV was my first combat ship. It taught me that I was not as crap at combat as I had allowed myself to believe I was from the tutorial mission :D

When you find yourself going into a RES looking for targets chanting “🎵Come and have a go, if you think you’re hard enough 🎶” then you know you’ve made it :D

I need to unlock some engineers before I can do the thrusters. I haven't got any Sensor Fragments yet, and not sure where to get them (or too scared).

I'm thinking of swapping out the two grade 1 beams for missile racks or MCs. Maybe that would help with overheating? I need to practice getting them on my nose before installing gimbles.

That's a long way off yet!, :)

Just switch to another fire group that doesn't include them, and they'll stop firing. FYI.

Overheating is another subject, and fairly complex. You could help a little by putting the Thermal Spread experimental on your powerplant. But with 4 beams on a Viper...it's gonna get hot yeah. Maybe replace the 2 medium hardpoints with multicannons -- less power draw, and good against hulls.

Now I just built myself a turret boat, a T10 with nothing but turrets and a fighter, so I'm not against turrets. But putting them on a Viper isn't such a great idea. You kinda need all the firepower you can get, and turrets are weaker than gimbaled.

Anyway, do whatever's fun. You'll get practice in any case, and learn how to control turrets.
