Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Well I finally bit the bullet (read: was bored) and fired up Oddity with a new commander. What can I say...

Nope, the nanny filter will not let me write what I wanted.

So, here is my system:

i7 6700K @ 4GHz
32GB RAM @3200
GTX 1070 8GB

I run 2560x1440 with Ultra settings - Horizons frames (when I unlock them) range from upper 80's to several hundreds.

Oddity -

Stations are in the 45 to 50 fps but juddery like a very juddery thing - really most unpleasant.
Concourse 40 to 55 and smooth until I look into the station when it drops by about ten.
Planet surfaces are 35 to 55 and quite smooth but the textures are complete jobbie - at least the planets I went on were not as rough and impassible (SRV) as in the Alpha.

Who turned off the lights? I mean seriously dim throughout - I had to adjust my monitor and the game's gamma - but at least we can see planets on the scanner now.

What have F D got against numerals? None of the rank bars show percentages and no you can't tell progression in the codex either. To me the worst of this is the crotch panel (role panel) where the shield and hull percentages are now removed - it still shows me what suit I am wearing when I am engaged in combat with ships in space - what is the flipping point of that? I mean, seriously, removing shield and hull health from this panel completely and replacing it with the suit outfit page really, really shows how this update is so FPS-oriented.

Control bindings - OK so there are now four sections so you can call up four different binding files for the different areas. My problem is that I would like to learn to use the game controller on foot but if I also want to use the mouse and WASD I end up with a "custom" binding and then when I go into Horizons I am dumped into "default context" and have to re-select my normal bindings. (It doesn't delete my bindings as I have them renamed but I can see lots of people might have issues with this.) I will have to experiment with renaming that on-foot "custom" it wants, such fun!

So there you go, a bit of a rambling effort but that was my morning on Elite. Some of the stuff that was dreadful in the Alpha has seen attempted improvements although the outfitting UI is still not great (again with the aversion to numerals F D !) but overall, even on my non-potato machine this "expansion" is dreadful and the thought of these changes going into Horizons fills me with apprehension. I for one wouldn't play the game if I had these display issues and the dearth of GFX cards to upgrade with is liable to see me spending much less time playing Elite in the future.

P.S. Don't get me started on the Oddity on-foot combat - I obviously couldn't complete the training mission so (after three death / reset to incoming killers) just skipped that training - I have no interest in FPS combat so obviously no skill in it either. No doubt lots of people like that kind of thing, it just isn't what I want to do and was not why I bought Elite.

One thing about exobiology is that you don’t need to do any engineering to the Artemis suit at all. Just buy it and you are ready to go.

All you have to do is hop on the SRV, drive to the target life forms, disembark, analyze the life form, and return to the SRV. Distances between these to obtain the necessary genetic diversity can be large so it’s much faster to just drive and disembark when near the life form.

The other thing with exobiology is patience. Firstly for finding the hard-to-spot bacterial/fungal spores and secondly for getting all biologicals on any given planet.

Haven't managed the latter yet! :D
True. For the fungoids, I have had to drive a very, very, very long time to find all three required samples. Same with the bacterial colonies. The shrubs and tubus and concha are much easier to find.

My rig is not as powerful as yours-an MSI Raider laptop with an i7 2.5 GHz processor, a 6 GB Nvidia RTX 2060, 16 GB of RAM, but I can run the game very smoothly even in stations. Yes, Odyssey looks darker than Horizons even in star rich areas. I also have experienced the HOTAS rebinding issue-I played Horizons but when I returned to Odyssey, I had to rebind all the HOTAS keys.

It's weird.

I'm reading about people with monster rigs seeing lousy performance, and others with aging hardware who seem to be getting decent frame rates.

I just don't get it.

On the darkness thing, I think I'm used to it now as it's not so noticeable. Just my perception as a lot of folk are saying the HUD is way too dark.

Odyssey needs work, for sure, a lot of it. However, now I've been playing it a while, I couldn't go back to EDH.

I s'pose it's one of those YMMV things.

I have a middling machine 3700X 32 gigs, 2060 Super 8 gig. And it drops to ~40 fps when viewing the settlement on fire rooms. Not happy about it. I am running in 1920p and other details on Ultra. I put a frame limit of 60 Hz which is pretty constant in space. During docking and station transitions it can drop to 50ish. Running around settlement exteriors it jumps from 55-60. The rooms on fire seems to be the main stress point, esp if I try to view 2 fires at the same time.

During one game session, ED must have broke something because it dropped to 17 fps and even in space it was only about 20fps. Restarting from desktop didnt help and only a full reboot solved it. Something about the code causes some gremlins I bet. And with the many permutations of PC setups, I bet its one gremlin or another for most people.

The darkness thing annoys me quite a lot. I especially hate the reflection glare from the torchlight (my eyes are photo sensitive) but I cant see anything if I turn the torch off in dead settlements. Anyone notice that the crashed Eagle, has a hull which absorbs the torchlight? You get a nice beam when shining on the planet floor but swing it over to the Eagle's hull and the light circle looks like a worn 1.5w tungsten bulb powered by used C cells.

Le sigh.

Looks like the Odyssey servers are down.

There really needs to be some elbow grease applied to the game as a whole... its a long way from acceptable at the moment.

I just failed two ship combat missions and took lots of expensive damage as well as rep hits.

I was about to curse Odyssey. Of course, when I got back to the station, I had that d'oh moment. I'd taken on a wing mission solo. Not the first time I've done this! I'm sure the icons were clearer before: the "wing" indicator was separate to the mission icon so it was easily distinguishable, but now they've combined the two. Memory is hazy.

Need to look harder!

At least I survived :D

Off topic -- Outer Worlds 2 trailer. I loved the first game. I'm excited they are doing another. And the trailer is hilarious.

Thanks for this. Playing through the first one at the moment, this is exciting news to me.

Back on topic, is anyone else having lots of ctds since the latest update, that didn't have them before?

I think I was even relatively crash-free during the alpha - although that might be because I decided to stop playing until it was ready.

In EDO? Are your CTD's when a carrier jump reaches one second? I was getting those but they seem to have gone away since the last update. There have been server side problems today which my cause this - see my post above.
