Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Not sure what happened while I was away but I logged in on a rescue ship in the heart of the empire. Not entirely sure I was here when I logged out :cautious:

Anyway, after eventually working out why there were zero missions available, I moved over to the nearby Mackenzie Relay, which gives a strong impression of being host to all the Galactic Sportball Championship games.

May be my imagination, but I feel like the flavour text for passenger missions has increased in variety. Don't remember transporting aid workers or prisoners of war before, and I'm not sure why this system has a bunch of refugees who want to leave, while it also has a rescue ship? Either way, I moved them to a nearby system for a small reward.

Meanwhile I see EDDB has gone and I'm finding myself coming up empty on being able to rank player factions by size to continue the old quest of becoming the most popular pilot in the galaxy... neither Inara nor EDSM seems to have this feature, which rather puts a crimp on that plan 😾

Rescue ships being temporary by nature you probably weren’t there before you were away, which means it is possible that you were on a station in a different system that has fallen to the Thargoids.

They probably want to get further from the front line of the war.

Yes a great loss.

Yes a great loss.

Sadly there was only 1 item left on my old top 20 list, but at least it's a start. Also I'm in the territory of the Order of Mobius - and when I have the name I can look them up. They are present in 55 systems, which isn't close to the top 20 with 100+ each, but... I am putting them in 2nd place since I will unfortunately have to manually discover factions now I guess 😔

Honestly, FDev should have a page with this information on lookup. If it's not available in game, it's kind of reasonable to host an official site with this stuff. Shouldn't require third parties to be able to identify which player faction has most systems because there's a fair number of people caring about that for one reason or another.

But anyway, I will see what I can do. Heard a rumour that there was an effort to replace EDDB, and maybe that will show up at some point and include the feature I was relying on? 🐱

I'd forgotten how far it is to go to Colonia.

Actual days unless you're not even stopping to honk. Think it took me about 2 weeks because I got distracted by a lot... A couple of hundred ly off the highway and I was finding undiscovered ELWs.

But if you don't want to do it twice, look up Fleet Carrier Owners Club on reddit - they do semi-weekly shuttle runs. Excellent service to know about.

Aha. Found another nifty high CZ. This one is small and intense and over relatively quickly. If all goes well, it can net me 7-9mCR per win. As an added bonus, it's only ~500LS from a station where you can select a side to fight for.

Heaven.
Why don't you just park your ship at the outskirts of the CZ, declare from the cockpit then go out in foot?

When the CZ is over, recall and go back to your ship, then exit to menu. Load back in and declare from the cockpit.

Rinse and repeat. Much more efficient than going back to a station to choose your side - you only need to visit Frontier Solutions to find the right CZ and to cash your bonds. If you're not fussed about the outcome of the war, you only need to do each once.

Um... yeah, I hadn't thought of that!

Allows you to break the 4-max experimental weapons limit a bit.

Yep, there’s the class 3 module that allows 1 extra AX weapon, and the class 5 that affords 2 more. Best suited to medium/large ships which have the module (not to forget weapon slot…) space i’d think?

Ahh, yes. I did hear about that I think. More weapons is good, right? :)

The more the merrier for combat, or at least for self-defense around the Titan - that said, we needed it as that corvette was quite big and hot, attracted quite a bit of attention whenever we got within a km or so of the Titan… Xernoxious uses overheating to burn corrosive gunk off his ship - he is an AX Combat pilot after all ;]

…the other route would be to go in cooler & stealthier - 4 weapons is probably more than enough, especially if you don’t have to draw them^ - and then there is more space for hull reinforcement …and/or a fairly hefty limpet controller :]

It’s nice to find something close by if one just wants to play on-foot rounds - that last CG with the planet 1ls away could make for a nice snappy FPS Arena even :D

…that said i tend to go with what i’ve stumbled upon, as with settlements stuff - longer Apex / dropship rides let me get other things done inbetween rounds - I can’t go to battle without tea at least ;]

I took a fleet carrier ride back to the bubble the last time I went (with my alt account to unlock engineers).
This time I spent a while 6000ly outside the bubble mining and exploring from my carrier before leaving it in deep space to head for Colonia.
I have ambitions to go on from Colonia to the 'western' most star in the galaxy and then fly back to the carrier. This is going to take a couple of months I should think.
I did do a speed run to Colonia via all the Colonia Bridge space stations with 20 data courier missions taken from Uto Port in Visteanis. That was fun - all the interdictioms every time I went near a space station. Those missions made me about 40 million. I did it over two days - approx 3 hours of play time.

I would hate to do it that way. It creates a immersion-breaking grind that would cause me to drop the game quite quickly.
Luckily, this isn't necessary in this game. If you love to grind - do whatever pleases you. I'll be checking a nearby star sytem for some alien structures in the meantime...

I ran into an Orthrus yesterday - it yelled “eat my shorts dust caustic smog!” and was off rather abruptly… leaving a group of rather irritable scouts (and me) in its wake ;p

...managed to record a bit of yesterday's Orthrus & Scout snafu on external cam - it's never the best option in alert/combat situations, as one has to use a static (relative to ship) camera more or less from one's own ship's point of view... or else die rather quickly/often ;]

Well, I can say I tried, at least. But getting those caustic tissue samples is just not something I can do. It's much too difficult.

Here's the build I have, nice and cool (runs at 16%), lots of armor, decontamination limpets, etc.

I parked my carrier as close as I could, which was 2 jumps to where Taranis is located. Took off with high hopes.

Got Hyperdicted right away, and it was a Glaive. I could not outrun it, so I tried to fight it a bit. My weapons did nothing to it (and I did have pips in weapons most of the time :) )

I managed to jump away at around 80% hull and continued on to the Maelstrom.

I was not interdicted in system (yay), so I did manage to enter the Maelstrom instance. I had 80% hull when I entered.

I immediately began taking caustic damage, and deployed a decontamination limpet. My hull continued to drop, nonetheless. I persevered and located a Caustic Generator.

By now my hull was critical (it had been 3 minutes since I entered the Maelstrom). I managed to scan the generator with my Xeno Scanner, but was unable to select the research limpet thingy on it, it just didn't show up.

I decided to run at that point, but it was too late. My canopy went, and then my ship exploded.

I lasted 3 minutes and 29 seconds in there, and blew up without ever firing a shot or doing anything at all, really. The time was too short for me to even get my bearings.

My conclusion? This is much too difficult, at least for me.

I will have to wait until they tone it down, or something. I consider it impossible at the moment. It was an interesting but fruitless experience.

Finally got into a Maelstrom. There were no caustic shards just floating around. There were a lot of Generators, a lot of acid clouds, and I saw one Thargoid, but that was it.

Spend too much time looking for something to just pick up and went through half my limpets decontaminating and repairing.

Returned to carrier with nothing.

I think the trick is to find generators near the outside of the Maelstrom, there shouldn't be caustic damage then until you get fairly close to it. If there is ever any caustic damage keep a decontamination limpet clamped to your ship, as soon as one expires fire another.

Actually, I have been finding at Taranis that just decelerating from Supercruise takes me a fair way in (it didn't at Hadad for some reason). So step 1 may be turning around 180 and heading out of the Maelstrom with a decontamination limpet attached. Once you stop taking caustic damage fire repair/decon limpets until your hull is OK, then start sniffing around for generators on the fringe of the Maelstrom...

Cheap beer has a way of doing that to you.
More expensive options will also work as long as you can acquire enough of them.

My I was going to say meander but that implies a more random course so let’s call it a stroll to Colonia continues.

While crossing the corner of one of the Norma regions I nipped off my Carrier and spent some time in a nebula finding a blast from the past bio, Bark Mounds I haven’t seen these since the days of the California Nebula CGs many years ago, nice to see that they can be sampled even if you do have to manage without EDObservatory.
I also got a first for me when I found Electriciae (sp?)

Back on my Carrier I am now about 7 jumps from Colonia and the sky is making me want to read the original Nightfall short story from 1941.

I started taking damage as soon as I dropped in, so...I dunno. I have a video of it. Damage starts immediately.
