Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Good Morning Commanders,

Rethalis here reporting from the Lonesome Beetle. Decided I would get some imperial ranks, I was getting close to making Baron and with it the Imperial Clipper. I was having a drink at the Gernsback bar in Groombridge 1618 and overheard a few commanders talking about defecting from the Federation for the Empire. They were talking about the large amount of courier missions between Ngalinn and Mainani. I slapped a few credits on the bar, downed my drink and headed to the Hanger.

I ran about 100-200 something courier missions in quick succession between the two systems., Its easy to loose count with such a mundane activity. One can pick up twenty missions from Ngalinn to Mainani, and between 5 and 15 missions on the return trip from Mainani to Ngalinn. Ended up ranking to viscount and was getting tired of the Haughty Imperials. A message came across my intercom from a "mysterious stranger" a tip off about a crashed ship on the opposite side of the bubble 400 light years away. Fortunate I thought.

Went on a slow trip doing scans and adding to my explorer rank. The crashed ship was on Bakulcan system, planet 1A. Well worth the trip, 700,000 credits in data com indigence, and nine units of rare Ruthenium. Whoever you are stranger, thanks for the tip.

While I was having a sip of whiskey and a toke of tabaco from the pipe celebrating the successful salvage, it dawned on me that I have not been to the Sol system yet, even though I have the permit. After a good rest I headed off. Landed at the Daedalus station around mercury. This sounded like a good place to settle down and do some work for the feds to get access to the assault ship. I had the towing company bring my eagle and my vulture over to the shipyard. While I was waiting decided to go investigate a crashed ship on the surface of mercury. I get close and of course I was trespassing, and all of sudden the Mother Gaian's had a bounty on my head. So jetted out and was going to figure out something else to do while waiting on my ships.

Within twenty seconds of leaving mercuries orbit I was interdicted and pulled out of hyperspace. A message comes across intercom from Commander Webgear "I have you now, better pay up!" I was in the Lonesome Beetle, its not exactly meant for combat. A DBX, D rated shields, D rated thrustors, stripped down equipment and no weapons. It didn't take long for commander Webgear in some sort of federal drop ship or gunship to take me down.

We had a good talk. Made my way back to Sol, picked up a nice fed rank mission this morning. 20 mil cred payout, but I have to take out 25 pirates. Wasn't planning on playing that much today, but I guess my plans changed.

Ha, the Ngalinn, Mainani run, i did that some time ago, i made it to Knight.
Those 25 pirates are gonna give you a hard time in a Diamondback, i hope you have a better ship to take them on.

Someone kindly gave me two embedded firmware's and a million buckaroos for ending a mostly harmless pirate. How generous of them. I didn't even notice the cash reward because I was searching missions by materials they offered. I was expecting a master or something.

I've got a couple of longer distance cargo missions but I'm taking a threat level 8 blackbox mission first so I can temporarily ditch the Krait for my Cobra. I've no intention of risking a 9M rebuy fighting a swarm. I need a runner who can be cheaply refurbished if necessary.

That's kinda what i am doing now, i have set up a cargo Python with decent shielding and weaponry.
Just taking on high threat courier and cargo missions, if i get interdicted i take the fight to them.
My Python can take quite a beating, one or two pirates i can usually handle, but when there are too many at once i have to make a run for it.
Yeah, three's too much if they're all on you at once. At least for me. Maybe if I had two fighters causing a distraction I could get away with it. I'm still learning what they're capable of.

That said, when I was reading up on them I got the impression they were destroyed pretty easily. I don't even think my harmless chick has lost a single one yet.

I did find the Python a bit too tanky though. I'd maybe go with a Mamba if I try a third experiment with medium ships.

It's best to start with low level pirates, learn about pip management, manoeuvring with flight assist off, and have at least your thrusters engineered so you can make a fast getaway when things go south.
It helps to have a joystick/throttle like a Logitech/Saitek X52, that works way better than keyboard and mouse.
I'm surprised to hear you say that since I got the impression that mouse and keyboard gave you better control. Particularly with FA off (barely tried that). The only reason I didn't go that route is that I just felt like the X52 approach was more immersive.

Though a lot of sci-fi like Star Trek don't use jet fighter type controls on their ships. I suppose mouse and keyboard could be more immersive if you change your mindset a bit.

I only bother with a wake scanner on a nippy ship and only use it to catch wakes near a busy station I have better uses for the utility slots especially in combat builds.

Point Defence are usually fitted near the cargo hatch to try and stop limpets or at the back, unless I am going to a Guardian site when I make sure to fit one on top for missile defence. They are handy when fighting in a RES as hearing them kickoff alerts me to nearby mines.

I didn’t use to but nowadays I include a Heat Sink Launcher on most things not just for removing excess heat but for helping break lock and sneaking about.

An overcharged beam will use twice as much energy for only about a third more damage and heat you up around three times faster than an efficient one both using thermal vent.
That mounts up when you have a multi laser build so you end up having to take shorter bursts and suffering from a drained distributor more often.

Out of the box the Krait should have nearly 5Ly better jump than the Cobra, sounds like it has put on weight.
Yeah, I think I'll probably go with the efficient approach since I'm really just keeping the beams going by the skin of my teeth as it is. Plus it'd be nice to stop hearing the ship constantly nagging me about heat damage.

I actually left weapon engineering till later because I wanted to properly see how I do in combat first. I'm almost regretting overcharging the multi-cannons now and might try something else with a completely new set. The lag in firing and reload is a little irritating.

One reason is that most of the ships in Star Trek are quite a bit bigger.
Some examples: The NX-01 Enterprise was 225m long, 135m wide and 33m tall. Sisko's Defiant was a little shorter with 170m, but about the same width and height. Which were about the smallest ships aside from shuttles and runabouts.

I always watch closely how full my multi-cannon magazines are and switch to lasers during the reload period, when I'm pulling around to fire again, I pull the trigger ahead of time because of the spin-up time. I try to keep my ship square on the target so they empty evenly. At the end of a fight, if the cannons are almost empty, I pull the trigger to finish off the magazines so I have a fresh reload for the next fight.

I have lasers on a different fire group than my cannons, I use lasers on shields and switch to cannons when their shields are down, NPC Pythons can be a tough nut to crack, especially dangerous and elite pilots. The higher they are ranked, the faster you move up in rank when you destroy them. I use premium ammo in my cannons, it chews through hulls much faster, some people prefer corrosive rounds, everyone has their own unique style they're comfortable with.

Yeah, I had the ship size in mind. Though I'm also one of the three people who liked Voyager so I was thinking about Tom Paris's Delta flyer too.

I did wonder about the fire group thing and didn't really get it. I have beams and cannons on one group and it works fine with an X52. You just have your primary and secondary fire buttons.

Good tips on the multi-cannon thing though. I suppose I've never had the calm cooledness to think about that during battle.

Usually only works if they are in front of you... Or if they feel the need to report back to whomever.

Unless they break sensor contact in some way. Then you have to find them again.

Almost forgot... If you try this without SCA, keep an eye out for your destination, you might blast past it and have to do the loop of shame.
I prefer to call it the loop of boredom. Sometimes I don't get around to pulling back on the throttle at 200Ls so I have to go back on myself. I feel like it saves time overall though.

I'm half way through my two cargo missions so I might leave the Krait in nearby Suhte and drop any data I might have for rep. I'm not sure whether I've been there before. If you get shot in the back by a no good coward, it's probably me.

I''m not at home, at the moment, so the risk of angering me is rather slim.

The lag on multi-cannons is variable, it is longest for any size when the opportunity for a quick battle winning shot comes up, small isn’t too bad medium take a bit longer but large take an absolute age to get to speed and start firing huge surprisingly until you look are quite a bit quicker than the large this is because they actually aren’t Gatling guns like the others just four non rotating barrels firing in sequence so a lot less prep time.

There is an auto load experimental that gets rid of that lag but it costs you in total ammunition capacity, but that means you can’t have incendiary to hurt shields more or corrosive to make hulls weaker. On my all multi-cannon builds I will have all of those experimentals to both hit the enemy harder and keep them under continuous fire.

Clipper is a fantastic ship. Imps done a real good job designing it. One of not too many real multipurpose, i think only Kraits can challenge this, if we take medium ships (still they're both slower and less agile in supercruise), and everything large is either slow, either being Saud Kruger, which crosses off either speed, either combat. Clipper can do everything, fight, explore, carry things and land on planets and release SRV all together. Very speedy, fast boost, and supercruise maneuvrability makes a lot of medium ships envy. Also somehow suprisingly cheap too (not in armored version obviously).

I outfitted mine with a bit more focus for in the Bubble affairs, with heavy armor and shield boosters trading for another couple of ly of jump range and when i'm rly in doubt of what i'm up to, i usually go with the Clipper. Could then be anywhere from scanning salad and gathering Ody mats to fighting pirates or scanning HGEs. That comes at a cost of an obvious large pad requirement and less obvious quite small for such ship fuel tank, the latter can be mitigated with a big enough fuel scoop. Also while being such a multipurpose creation, you often end up with stealing smth (as possibilities always appear around, but in another ship you either lack limpets, either cargo, either you are lazy, and Clipper can do all that for you) - that mitigates the large pad, you don't need any pad if you have a bounty on you after all.

She shines after being engi'd though, at least THR/FSD/PD, and an FSD booster is nearly a must, otherwise too small jump for my tastes. Ah, and also she's nice at boosting at things and ramming them, especially the light ones, that sometimes come quite close and shoot at you without being aware of that boost speed and turn rate. Ah, and also you can sometimes find a lot of canisters in degraded emission signals - and pick up all the Aluminium and Leather just because you can (fast direct limpet for each canister, who cares, you have 128 limpets), and then sell them at a black market (i've found 27 and 36 t accordingly from what i see on Inara, but they'll likely clutter in the carrier storage for a while, as each ton costs around 500 cr - i did put them on sale on the carrier's black market though). Ah, and also you can even go to Distress Calls because you can help. Ppl usually ask for fuel or repairs, but once i was asked for food. Luckily i've stolen some canisters of tea before that, and now if you wondered before if tea is food or it isn't - it's. Wonder if they were chewing leafs or something. Or that tea in the canisters is maybe already liquid tea. So a great ship to wander around. Possibly together with picking up not nailed down things.

I might sound a bit complimentary as i'm 15k ly away from the Bubble, and what's worse carrier is as well. And being a bit torn between returning and staying for some more. So i dump it here. Also i don't have a recent picture, that one is from the days of outfitting the ship yet, you don't take pictures in the Clipper, you do real things. When Midnight Black paint appeared, Clipper was awarded that color.
