Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

IIRC, all the audio files are in the .ogg format. It's therefore trivially easy to import them into an audio tool like Audacity and reduce the amplitude of the signal yourself.

Doing this to the client files on your machine will take less than 5 minutes, provided you can find the file. The best thing to do is file a bug report and ask the developers to reduce the loudness of the tune. I've found the audio team to be very responsive to bug reports in the past.
To avoid duplicates this report seems to be open.

It's been a while since my last report...

I thought I heard a noise...

Luckily, I found a little fortress.

We were talking about ELWs and such, recently.

Still no ELW, though...

I've tested this fairly extensively now and can report that the performance in basically any station is not just better, but significantly better - up to ~30% better in some situations.

My graphics settings are exactly the same I use in my Windows install (which I have only logged into for a meeting as Teams in the browser doesn't support blurring or custom backgrounds and I hadn't made my bed, which, unfortunately, is right behind my desk). I don't know where the extra frames are coming from, but I shan't complain.

I have yet to do a GCZ. I suspect this will bring me back to earth, so to speak.
This is quite intriguing and maybe worth spinning off into a thread on the PC forum? (Linky)

Short question here tho - what are you comparing this with - Windows 10 or Windows 11, and what graphics card? There's a few well-known points where the Windows stack doesn't cope well with what ED is doing here specifically (which includes the-behaviour-of-the-driver-on-Windows as well as Windows kernel-level stuff) - I can totally see how the Linux-Proton-GPU vendor stack might have different pinchpoints and they might just coincide better with what ED's engine needs.

Edit: Just noticed your sig, so to answer my own question: 5800X3D | RTX 4070 Super.

Yeah, the Linux kernel is way ahead on driving benefit out of the X3D processors because it just understands them better than Windows does at the moment, and that's completely consistent with your experience of better performance in high-independent-object-count situations.

Hi All :)

I don't know whose bright idea it was to put that very loud, annoying, obnoxious music into play every time you access the carrier screen, but it really needs to go.

Ah!...I'm glad you pointed that out, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my sound settings set up! (y)

What am I doing at the moment?...Back in the bubble, carrying out some go fetch missions back at my 'home base port' (just for a change in gameplay). I still have an excellent standing with all factions here so they're paying me top dollar for the missions.🤑
I might also try fitting some SCO drives to some of my ships, as I haven't tried that new feature yet. Loaded up with a few thousand units of Tritium a few days back ready for another foray back into the uncharted territories, sometime over the next week or so.
Just a thought,...I wonder where the Generation ship 'Golconda' might be nowadays, as it's been over 6 months? since it left the Upaniklis system. 🤔

Jack :)

Well over 6 months, more like 2 years since the relaunch CG.

I remember reading somewhere that the CPU scheduler in Linux was more efficient than that of Windows, so that makes perfect sense.

I must admit I do enjoy the performance in GCZs. I could almost describe it as "smooth".

Well Penny did the seeming needful and ditched a mining tool (subsurface deposits remover) to fit on a second large combat hardpoint on the Python. It shoots pretty similar to my original vulture now with a laser and a multi cannon - on turrets.

Then on my second Vulture I had gimbals - and that was so fun; but now trying to keep facing a vulture for example is more trying. And I see what my enemies had to reckon with! But with the turrets, now, for now, I can keep the pirates at bay okay. Their limpets can be irritating though. So I wonder if the screening rounds can peg those little dorks, or the point defense. I dunno. The point is,

Now my Python mkII is great fun to take to hazardous resource zones and pick fights, and my Python regularo is great to uh avoid anything like that but just go mining (or signal sources! So many limpets! Want a limpet?). It's not as fun to fly as the Vultures though, well, neither of them Pythons, nor so solid in the hull, yet.

But I Penny Noon am tied for first and renowned for as many different makes of Python as anyone in Colonia!! ha ha

Soon I take Dolph Vader (dolphin) and TIE Liner (orca) on similar trips to the fringes west, in a true luxury liner showdown and pair of exobiological windfalls. You know, subject to fiery death. In any case, refreshment on the horizon

As for "what am I doing" - the answer is still "rather too much AFK" but I miss your faces.

Hey we got yer back on that one CMDR Chaney. Just don't count on any hidden markov chains in the pixel matrix!

Well once I said it I just realized all I wanna do is go more exploring really. Here I am leaving Prisma Renata base a little 50CR fine to remember me by. Then I accidentally paid it down at Jaques on the way out. My record is clean. Well the Dolphin had to get the SCO drive in it too to be a fair unbiased test. They might have sold me a hot size 4 FSD (SCO).

Anyways I'm heading back to the center of the milkyway instead of west. It sounds rather grand and I didn't even peek at the great massive hole on my last trip. Next port should be the Explorer's Anchorage in the Stuemaes area

Now after that line we foley in some ghost noises from the stripped passenger compartments and play the overhead "ding" for seatbelts

Seems to be ok now from the command seat consol - it's not normal in-game music, just background to the FC admin menu so i don't think the game options/audio/music controls would affect it.
It should still be part of the ingame music. There's also background music for some other menu thingies, which you can turn off individually in the audio settings if you don't want to turn off all music. At least it was like tha the last time I looked.
