Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

What's the range on the LR G5?

I have a long range ADS but contemplating a move to fast scan.

Do you mean the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS)? 'Cos the Advanced Discovery Scanner (ADS) is infinite range anyway :)

If so, then there is a good debate about Fast vs Long Range over here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/443954-Wide-angle-DSS-does-anyone-use-it (don't be fooled by the "Wide Angle" title, it soon develops into Fast v Long, on account of Wide getting dismissed early on)

My personal preference is for Long range, as it's possible to scan whole gas-giant systems from a single vantage point, close solar objects are easily picked off without moving, and it saves a lot of manoeuvering / getting "stuck" in gravity wells.

If you're still on about a wake scanner though, definitely go for Fast!

I was referring to the wake scanner, for that LR is 8.8 km.

For the DSS, it is a percentage increase, not distance, since the DSS depends on the body mass, you won't get a flat range number.

ADS can't be modded.

Good thread linked by CMDR Spaceman Si on the DSS.

I’ll have to have a read of the linked thread.

I use fast scan on the wake scanner and kill warrant scanner (that’s probably a more obvious choice when you’re about to enter combat) and like Bob use my boost to whizz around. In the right ship it’s pretty quick and easy.

With the DSS I tried long range but it didn’t appear to offer any great advantage, then I got bogged down in saving weight and gaining jump range so swapped it for an unmodded version. Now I’m less myopic about my jump range on an explorer build and wonder if I should revisit the LR mod with some level of testing and refit it to one of my ships.

First a good read to see what others make of it all.

Thanks Bob.

EDIT: sorry SpacemanSi.....it’s you that provided the link!

My explorers have G3 fast scan for the DSS.
I reasoned it is "x" faster than unmodded and isn't too much of a mass gain.
I've been reconsidering LR.

Seems like it might be a better choice in retrospect.

Plotting route towards pennsylvania.763 jumps to max plot.+ a guesstimate 80 odd.Road trip,\0/.Finally figured out how to transfer ps4 2 usb stick so the camera should work ok now.Done a fair bit of station bashing, boost landings problem unrectified, and a little bit of dancing on the pad, which turned out to be a mistake, since i'm hanging on the edge of the bubble in an outpost with no repair, and 30% fewer hull.oops.:)Colonai here we come.:D

Qualified for all 3 Guardian SLFs last night, and have enough mats for the MRP as well.

If I never see another Pattern Epsilon Obelisk Data...

Well, I don't know. Maybe you should farm some as a reserve in case a full Guardian line of ships appears in Q4. ;) :p

LOL!

I already needed 93 Pattern Epsilons for all of that!
None of the other mat requirements were even close.

As I was heading back to my ship with that exact amount, I saw another obelisk in my path, so naturally I scanned it...

"Ninety-SIX! BUAHahahahahaha!!!"

(Yes, I totally lost it...)

Playing Elite dangerous Solo, wondering why no kraits for sale..??? reached tycoon pathfinder while staying mostly harmless, but started to fight and stand my ground....

Then the penny dropped...started up horizons..( phew my ranks transferr !) ... this is why I like this game....

Made the long haul to MAIA for meta-alloys, cost me 124K + a trashed anaconda insurance rebuy... over 700kly

The graphics are just amazing....

Now, this Guardian stuff. It seems like some mythical, far off pursuit of esoterica to me at the moment. Is it something worth looking into sooner rather than later? I know practically zilch about it

The FSD booster is well worth the effort and the stuff is all pretty cool the first time around imo.

You basically have to fly 7-800 ly from the bubble.
Then you use the SRV to shoot a bunch of drones, scan some stuff and do a puzzle.
You then use the parts you scavenge from the drones and suroundings, and the data you scanned, along with a few commodities you buy to unlock the FSD booster.

Once it's unlocked however, you can buy as many as you like and in all the sizes.

There is a slightly different process for the SLFs and some other modules, but it takes about the same amount of time.

I made it much less pleasant by wanting to get all three fighters in one go.

I did the FSD booster alone a couple of weeks ago and it was much more fun.
Pretty immersive and enertaining that time.
It would be way easier with a partner but it's not hard at all if you take your time.

Getting to double Elite standing by hitting Elite Trader after much to-ing and fro-ing in my T9, Cutter and re-discovered Python. That ship seems to be a love it or lambast it ship for many but since starting to really trade in recent weeks/months I've come to respect it fully. As an outright trader it handles beautifully, carries ... well I've been carrying 288 tonnes, goes anywhere without issue and has a perfectly elegant yet subdued bridge. Thank you C.R.V Francis Drake.

How do you resist spending that bank balance? I'm a few percent away from double Elite (Explorer nearly got) but never get a bank balance much above 200million before I get the urge to spend cash :)

Congrats! O7

Thanks Tyres :)

:D

Despite having twenty ships now, I bought two Haulers earlier today, I tend to have pretty cheap tastes and go for Cobras, Vipers and so on. I've been trying to build mini fleets in different systems so I've always got somewhere I can go where I'm Allied if I need or want any particular kind of mission or activity, that's led to a lot of Cobras and not many big ships.

I have splashed out on one of each of the "Big 3" and am saving up my mats to outfit another Corvette so a lot of that will go soon. I just wish I could pick up some materials as easily as it is to make credits.....but that's what my two new Haulers are for, imaginatively named Selenium Hunter and Cadmium Hunter (;)) and left in systems high in those materials.
