Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Hmm. I may be misleading myself, but my combat rank seems to be approaching the next level a little faster now I'm CZing. Just my percption, perhaps?

EDIT Off for a wee snifter with Juro Ishmaak as I've handed in 51 bonds. I wonder what else he wants...

Ahem.... First near crash landing ever! Wish I had a video clip of that. Got distracted while approching cobra crash site planet, and due to the conveyer belt repetitive task, I got very good at targeting the site and dropping out of glide just short above it, one more boost and land. Just this time, it was two more boosts and even with full reverse, landing gear down, not a chance, so my basic shields safed the DBX, all rings down, no damage to hull. Pheew. Hit the back of the cobra smack on. LOL :)

Getting tired of that routine, but need to persist. Not leaving before all bins are filled up to the maximum. Tomorrow is packhound day and a new pledge for pacifiers.

Then bye bye Li-Yong, and... wait a sec....dammit, what's that? He sneezes a lot, and that cough dosen't sound good, not good at all.... hmmm.

I've heard of it, and seen pirates do it in the Rez sites...but I'd never put much stock into it. What am I speaking about? Why collector limpets! All this time I have been:

  • Shoot Ship
  • Shoot Ship some more until it blows up
  • Check Contact screen to find materials
  • Play chicken with materials
  • Scoop up materials, try again, and again...and...Damn, it disappeared.

I had an open class 1 slot on my FDL, so I got a collector controller, moved out one of my class 4 SCB's and put in an cargo rack. (Yes, I did get limpets...learned that lesson once already) Then went back out to my local High Res and started following the Sec Boys around and getting in a few shots at some poor bastage before he was carbonized.

Checked the Contact Screen...Yup, materials! Launched a limpet, opened the cargo hatch, and let the little white dot go pick up my stuff. So much easier than trying to peck them up like a big chicken picking up pieces of grain.

NOTE!!! If there are canisters floating around, put them on your "Do Not Touch" list. Unless you actually lock onto them, it doesn't say that they may be illegal goods (and probably 100% of them are if they were on board a pirate ship). I was getting ready to head back to Ohm City and looked at my cargo and saw that there was Cargo there. Funny, I didn't have any except for limpets when I left. My happy little limpet decided that I needed Everything and picked up some contraband items. At least I didn't get scanned by the Sec Boys or try to dock like normal...Getting blown up isn't my idea of fun.

So to those who haven't done this, it is a great way to load up your mats when you are in a Rez site. Just make sure you do get some shots in on the bad guy, otherwise you won't be able to collect the mats from his ship when it blows up. After it blows up, fly close to the mats, open the cargo hold, launch a limpet and relax while it does the work.

Depending on how patient you are, you can have more than one limpet going. I usually go to the Compromised Nav at LTT 4487, 14 ly from Jameson. I have a Corvette built for scavenging mats with 13 limpets picking up mats at a time out of 128 limpets that I bring. Then I just park it, and shoot at any wanted NpC. If you wait until you can see the white in their eyes, you can have them pop as close to your ship as possible, meaning that the limpets can scavenge parts more quickly. It sounds trivial, but it's by far the most entertaining part of grinding mats if you ask me (I know you didn't ;)). I even think you get encoded mats by scanning the ships as well.

If entertainment is more important than scavenging, and I guess it is, then you can easily bring the limpets along, if you decide to go dancing with one of the pirates. You loose some limpets, but then you just release some more. You'll probably need to accept the trouble of closing the cargo scoop (not always), and it's not as efficient as just parking, pointing, shooting and collecting :) And you can even do it in open.

parking, pointing, shooting and collecting :)

THIS! is great in a Corvette, with two small long range beams to attract them from far, then wait...activate Killwarrant scanner.... wait some more... wait....

ALL GUNS BLAZING.... PLOPPPPPP..... collect.... rinse and repeat.

Great fun also are wings of three, and the best part is zero pips in engines, two in sys, all in weapons... The encoded by ship scans are rare in my neck of the woods though.

Another variation is to get 4-5 kill scans at first, then start taking them out.

Not much time today, so I did some low-key mining while finishing the laundry and stuff. I never get tired of the views, I'll say that :)

Currently looking into upgrading the video card and adding some more memory...

Rant Mode On

I hate bit-miners...a lot. You use to be able to find video cards EVERYWHERE! I looked at Fry's Electronics online. We have TWO stores here in Phoenix! And every video card that is worth a darn is Sold Out...That isn't just at my stores...that is through the Entire Fry's Electronics Chain!! I understand that bit-mining can make money. I also understand that it EATS electricity, and that it is easier to use video cards to do the mining than to have actual PC's to do it. Space-wise, video cards (and the box to hold them) take up less space than a PC...Understand that. But DAMMIT!!! Stop Buying All the Bloody Video Cards!....okay I feel better.

Rant Mode Off

I found an AMD card (8gb, PCIe+16) for just under $400...Seems high, but after seeing cards that are over $1,200 I guess I can't gripe too much. Memory is not bad, I can run a max of 32GB in my machine, so I can run 4x 8GB cards and that should help out nicely. 4 of those will set me back only about $150-$160 total.

I am running an old Lenovo Erazer X315 rig that does play the game quite nicely, it is just the video card I have is starting to gets some screen glitches that also pop up in other games I play (No Man's Sky, Sniper Elite 4, Destiny 2). Keeping my eyes open for deals, hopefully something nice will pop up.

It's their shenanigans that put those prices way up there.

Bah.

Anyhoo, back to ED:

My Colonia alt, who still hasn't actually reached Colonia (and is, in fact out on the wrong side of the bubble...) is looking to breach 5k ly from home to get Palin et al unlocked. Was slow-boating the 'generation glitch line I posted a ways back, but the alt in the Purple Hauler posted more recently hit up a few uncharted systems en route - not being into exploration on that account (that run was also for unlocking Engineers) I bookmarked them on my Colonia acct after just pinging the stars, and carried on.

So Colonia alt has stuck a pin in the 'glitch line' and has started following the little Purple Hauler towards the Jellyfish Nebula to map those systems.

I'm still 80 jumps out from the first of those, and I found some intersting looking unmapped worlds, so I thought I'd fling some probes, then do some geology to get me some mats - if I'm unlocking engineers, gonna need those eventually!

So many words, lets try pictures!

The trouble with getting unexpected cargo that way is the pirates can stop going on about their starving lids and your poor chances of making a living and start saying give me or else, of course it isn’t going to be much trouble but it can come as a surprise.

After delivering 300+ Hutton Mugs in the Keelback, I decided it was time for a change of ship.
Ah yes, I've got a Krait Phantom stashed somewhere... Nope, can't find it, maybe it was on PS4.
Bought a new one, not sure what exactly to do with it, as long as it has 68 capacity in the hold.

Finished it. Decided to go combat capable, the only combat ships I've got are the Corvette and all the AX stuff.
4 efficient PAs, big Bi-weaves, couple of shield boosters.
Not sure about the experimental on the PAs, just put a mix on for now.

Right, back to Hutton Orbital for another load! o7

Edit: I can't believe how fast this thing is!

Zac Nemo is well worth it for the frags.

High capacity grade 5 with oversized and one corrosive.

I've been finishing the engineering on my Phantom. I finally settled on efficient PACs and long range rails. I'm trying to like the ship - I really am! - but it's just not as good as the Krait Mk. II.

After I did that last night I broke out my speed demon Sidey and went to the HIRES for a while. That was fun!

As for plasmas on the Vulture, it's easily achievable with efficient mods. Long range or focussed both get toasty, but work OK if you take all available steps to bring the heat down (flow control, armoured power plant G5 with thermal spread, clean drives with thermal spread, etc.) and don't mind your cockpit being a bit on fire sometimes.

I still haven’t bothered with her or Zac Nemo nor of course the Colonia crew.

Yeah, I haven't done Colonia either but I do have Nemo. Missing Bris and Lori Jameson. And with the latter, there's very little to recommend her either as her stuff is mostly covered by other folk. Mostly.

Which has all got me thinking about experimenting with other weaponry instead of grinding away to get "dangerous". But perhaps I'll do that anyway then move on to another pursuit :D

Questions to fighting folk though - and these are based on PvE in a hazres (or CZ) situation:
  1. Cannons: I'm curreently tooled up with MC's but how do regular cannons fair? And PA's? I tried frags but they didn't feel good to me.
  2. Fixed weapons like rail guns. Now, I'm prettyt bad at lining up shots so I think these may be a bit beyond me. Are they worth persevering with? Or is worth learning the shudder FAoff thing first?
  3. Bi-weave shields: I currently have, on my 'Vette, G5 reinforced 7A's, fast charge and five shield boosters with various effects. I know bi-weave will recharge faster (my current shielding takes an age) but, in reality, how do bi-weaves fair?
  4. Lastly, missiles, torperdoes and mines. I can't (yet) see a situation that warrents these, especially given where I'll be fighting. Does anyone use these to god effect? This is based on just the regualarly available ones - those "pack hound" things I keep hearing about, well, I'll probably never get those and what they do is beyond my current understanding.

And, very lastly - honest! - apologies for all the questions!

  1. I've never got on with cannons. PAs are great fun, but are the most challenging to use. Frags are love. Frags are life.
  2. Either way is going to be a challenge. Getting better at one will (probably) help you with the other.
  3. Biweaves really benefit from thermal resistant and resistance augmented shield boosters with thermal resistant shield mods - adding megajoules kind of defeats the object of them.
  4. Missiles are OK. All the others are edge case engineering weapons, imo.
