Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I've been busy on Coriolis.io getting my mind blown about the Type 7 Transporter.

Where to start. I've been looking at all of the Type's as potential exploration vessels. For fun, for excessive internals, but mostly still for fun. The Krait Phantom is my exploration vessel touchstone, so I started out by making a personalized 'Explorer Type 7' and then I tried kitting out a Phantom as similarly as possible. I was not prepared for the results.

Everywhere it mattered for an exploration vessel, the Type 7 outperformed the Phantom just a little bit. Better jump range, better overall internals. Everything except for thermal management, that being an unfortunate feature of the Type 7. I'm not worried though, there is still enough headroom left for the Type 7 to level the playing field.

That's all in all not bad for a ship almost half the price. And it really goes to show how this game can subvert expectations about two ships with two fairly stereotyped roles.

I spent much of my early time on the game in a T7, firstly as a trader and then as an explorer. Have spent months in it and love it. I agree with you - there is so much overlap between the various ships that we just have to pick favourites, really - the differences aren't great enough between some of them to make it worth seeking out a 'best' ship, judged by some absolute standard, imho. So I just go with favourite. I find the Python capable (although don't like the offset cockpit) but somehow a little dull. T7 is all fun and personality to me.

Hmm... my Phantom does 66.8LYs in one jump. It's only bested by my Jumpaconda. Thermally, the Phantom is is a peach, skimming stars quite closely for refuel. The Type 7, obviously, will put the kaibosh on cargo carrying though.

EDIT It's pretty manoeuvrable too.

EDIT 2: This has me wondering: what use is T10? Does anyone use one?

I spent a period in a T10 with turrets, a fighter hangar and a decent chunk of cargo capacity. Had decent shields and major work on the hull, cost me a fortune. I used to love taking on multiple enemies and just let the turrets fire off in all directions, was like piloting an old battleship or something. The hull could take such a pounding that I could sit in the thick of the action for ages just enjoying it and toggling my pilot between fighters as fighters were destroyed. Good fun but just found the ship too unwieldy to make it my permanent favourite. But it had to be turrets - anything else and I couldn't get enough time on target.

Also me during the past two evenings:

Thanks, I have taken notes. Still not sure which of the two ships to go for though.

T7!! Much more interesting than yet another Python. And the view is better, which matters to an explorer. Long range exploration I am either Asp-S or T7 (although Clipper was just added to the rotation).

I have a minor question, didn't feel like opening a new thread for it. Thermal Resistance modifications are mentioned on the Wiki a lot to be helpful against weapons fire. So not stars so much then?

Cheaper than a Morgan, too. Somewhat further down the scale, I had an Austin Sprite when I first moved here 13 years ago but between the wind and the rain it was tough using it year round, and now I increasingly shuttle kids to Scouts, schools, bands etc. TR6 would give the same winter issues!
Decades ago a colleague at work had a lovely TR6 but it suffered from one of the models common faults and the king pins in the front suspension/stearing assembly failed and the front wheels folded under the car fortunately it was near work so he wasn’t going fast.

Now off to check backups for bindings etc.

You see it on other things than shield too though? Unless I'm mixing up things.
You do but it is all about weapons damage, shields are most vulnerable to thermal weapons like lasers so adding thermal resist to shields and shield boosters helps, hull and armour isn't as vulnerable but you can still increase their thermal resistance but that might not be the best option.
Stars don't cause damage in the same way.

Gotcha. Thanks a bunch for the help.

Time for another one of my irregular posts to this thread with an update on my quest for combat elite rank (which would also give me the triple) ... now at 90% Deadly.

I find I get one or two percentage points per play session, depending on how long I can spend playing, so my goal is hopefully only a week or so away now.

You need about 300 more kills. Make a count-down chart and tick them off.

Took the DBX to SOL for no reason. Visited the Moon. It's still there.

So it has been a while but I remember back in the distant past after patches/upgrades it took forever to download the new files and verify them - is this still a thing?

Pretty much written off today in terms of meaningful game time (boo - this is one of my 'game days') so hopefully by the time I come back later from RL activities today, the update won't take as long as some I remember...

Do I just copy back my bindings files afterwords or do I update/verify/whatever and then check to see if there is any carnage!

Far from the biggest news of the day, but two things for me - the ever-lovely Mrs Templar was working late last night, so I stayed up until 0300 to keep her company, so had more time on than I usually do. Moved my combat ranking up 4% in the Courier (thank you, @Codger, for the recommendation, loving the ship) then took the Cutter out mining and FINALLY unlocked Marsha Hicks. Who knew that Osmium would be so hard to find?! Anyway, good luck with the various downloads & hope the bindings stick for you all.

Looking forward to a smooth roll-out!

lol.

How long have you been playing now, Tyres? :D :)

Actually, that reminds me of when I'm going in hot to a station on a timed courier mission...

Station Control: "Welcome commander, please fly safely on approach and observe speed restrictions"
Me: LOL

:)

Actually, they sometimes give out the "reduce your speed" message, even if I've been approaching at a very leisurely pace. I don't think they really take too much notice of how fast you're going (unless you hit something)

Whilst I'm at it, has anyone ever noticed the peculiarities of approaching an outpost? Outposts never have a Large landing pad, so why is it that without fail, I see Orcas, T7's, T9's, Clippers, and Anacondas approaching and leaving the place? They never land, but it's almost like they dropped in on their way somewhere because they felt like picking up a paper or some sweets for the journey and then suddenly realised that there wasn't anywhere for them to park. The good thing though, is that they always seem to be worth scanning for data.
