Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I arrived at the Carbon Star. It looks pretty much like a Y or L type, but it humongous. It's 155 time the suns radius. There a 1.8G moon orbiting around 100ls from it, with a Tourist Beacon and bits of ship from less fortunate explorers.

I found a bit of the ship that needed the Arc tool to open, so I slipped on my Mav suit and cracked it open. I couldn't find a Regulator, so that was a waste of time. Don't know, will never know, what would have happened if I had a spare one kicking about.

There's a round blue thing that when you hover over it you see "E" to Open, then "E" again to take it once its open, or "F" to close.

But only take it if it is glowing, otherwise its useless AFAIK...

OH, if you've ever gotten a regulator it will be on your ship. You can transfer items between your suit and your ship by standing in the BTCoS*...

*BTCoS - Blue Transporter Cylinder of Shame - Coined around Ody launch to refer to the "not being able to walk out of the ship" Armstong Moment...

I haven't got any Ody Mats yet. This is the first time I've donned the two suits.

(and the AFMU, I only have one though, can't repair itself (Next time I'll bring two)).
No need. Unlike e.g. FSD or Power Plant, the AFMU doesn't suffer from gradual degradation - it either works (integrity >0%) or it doesn't (integrity = 0%). So, if it should ever fail before your powerplant fails (which you can't repair), you can do a reboot&repair sequence which will bring it up again to a few percent integrity, which is good enough.

Unless you fly a big ship and don't want to keep any slots unfilled. Then the AFMU is slightly better, but also more expensive, than an empty cargo rack.

I had actually accepted the fact that I had just lost data for over 1200 systems and 10+ ELW's and all the xenobiology data too. I started wondering where I was going to restart after the rebuy. The repair limpets work great, btw (and the AFMU, I only have one though, can't repair itself (Next time I'll bring two)).
Personally, I don't subscribe to the two AFMUs in an exploration ship view, unless I've decided to explore in an Anaconda and have nothing better to use the slot for.
AFMU health seems to decay at the same rate or slower than the power plant. You can't repair the power plant with an AFMU, only at a station or carrier. If an AFMU somehow reaches 0% health when the power plant is still healthy, a ship reboot brings it back on 1% and it will function. The answer to running out of ammo is obviously synthesis more, which I've only ever had to do once on a 3A AFMU in a Phantom.
I am opening to changing my mind if I can see a situation where a second AFMU adds value.

On an old explorer (I change ship for every expedition) I had two AFMUs.
After a couple hundred thousand light years I was back in the Bubble, and I hadn't used a single AFMU once: this was before I had a FC, so I didn't have a safe haven in case things went bad, and didn't visit the DSSA.
AFMUs are essential if one plans to use neutron stars extensively, otherwise they are pretty much unneeded (the second one being useless).
Nowadays I keep only one small AFMU, just in case.
