What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

Today I began a new European zoo. I had some struggles with designs, ended up using workshop items as a temporary thing untill I can get an idea as to what I want for certain voids, habitats and Scenary.
My current European zoo has some flaws that are bugging me, I spent a lot of time on it but now I feel the need to restart it with something new. Still figuring out how to use the boat ride as my previous European zoo had a boat ride.

Things are about to get very busy for me (got a bunch of assignments to finish over the next few days and then I'm in the field for a whole week) but I still managed to fit in a short PZ sesh today whilst procrastinating on doing uni work.

Did some more work on the Devil Conservation Centre that, surprise surprise, mostly involved building and improving enclosures for Tasmanian devils. First I went back to the two entrance enclosures and properly vegetated their understory now that I had the funds for it - those ground ferns (made by combining two basket ferns together and then pushing them into the ground) cost $50 each, so obviously they're not something you want to be spamming around when you're low on cash (only takes twenty ferns to drain a thousand dollars). Now the only remaining dustbowl habitat is the dingoes, but their enclosure is so massive that it'll take a lot more time and money to properly vegetate.

After improving the current devil digs I built a new pair of devil habitats next to the koalas and emus. Of course, given most guests already see devils at the entrance of the zoo this area doesn't get much traffic (can't relate, personally the only thing better than Tasmanian devils is more Tasmanian devils, as this zoo epitomises), but they offer some more spacious areas for the devils to enjoy.

The elderly Akira, the last remaining of the zoo's original five devils, has been moved into one of these new habitats, alongside her two children Banalandju and Yeeralparil and her stepson Ngarra Jr. She's very much in the twilight years of her life now and this gives her a quieter corner of the zoo to spend her remaining months - ignoring the boisterous imps of course!

There are no new litters on the way as of now, but the other three enclosures all now have newly adopted devils that should hopefully soon bond and begin to produce young. With that in mind, I thought I should also share the Google Sheets studbook I've started to keep track of the zoo's devil population over time - while most of the information I record here is available in-game, having it all in one place like this should make things easier to manage, and will also make sure I have records of every devil that has ever been kept in the zoo, even long after they've passed. Plus, the tism in my brain just likes keeping things organised like this lol.

Started a new zoo to see if i was to harsh on franchise mode, even put it on hard to let the management give me everything it got aaaaand.... wow what a not good experience that was.
My number one issue is just that starting a new zoo is really not fun.
More or less, to start the zoo you need to spend money, but with that little money you cant build something decent before running out, so you got to start with something majorly halfbaked and man that aint fun.
Ofcourse i understand the idear of pay money to build stuff, but being literally punished for putting effort into building in a creative building game is just so counter intuitive and frustrating. I started of with a swan pond with an gibbon island, aswell as some exhibits that im gonna delete later. When i was activly playing i was rapidly loosing money and while i could have just waited whenever i had a small positive and just let some money stack up i really just did not feel like not playing when all i wanted the last week was to finally play again. So i lowerd my standards, made the most basic ass goat habitat and got some money, but then i build a toilet + their stables followed by an inspector spotting a swan outside of the pond and i was in the red. Hooray.
And lets say buying 2 chicken with cc only for 1 of them to die after literally 2 minutes also wasnt the best showing.

Ill most likly still continue with the zoo, but idk if i continue in franchise mode.
Money is draining again from the incredible costs of 5 peoples wages, 3 goats appetite and 2 gibbons and id be lying if i said that im motivated to wait however long it takes till the finances stabilised again.
For what id do once they do, i drew a rough outline of how big i want the zoo to be. I set the goal of not more then 15 habitats and to finish the zoo till the end of the year, so wish me luck.

Like others, I am inspired by Chuditch... I want to start a breeding program too. I was thinking wild dogs but to focus on something a bit different than I usually spend time on I decided to go with...

...Sand Cats. Welcome to the Desert Cat Park :) As you can see it is very hot!
So I built umbrellas that ruined the whole atmosphere but hopefully the guests are happier...

Abbas the first male adopted from Frontier Zoo. He came right up to the front of the habitat :) Nina, the female is more shy.

If my experience in this mode can be helpfull, i would remove the gibbons temporarily and swap then for something like a domestic or bird. In franchise mode, high to mid appeal animals should be avoided at the start of the zoo, not only because of they high cost, but also because guests tend to get stuck on the entrance because they already saw a high profile animal.

If you don't know the appeal of the animals, here's a list from reddit showing all the animals appeal from base game to Oceania (barnyard animals should be at the last category btw):

Back from vacation.
My "ZT1 meets PZ" zoo is growing. I'm very happy with it, even though it looks really simple. I'm trying not to add too much frills, because I want ALL the animals in the zoo. I'm not 100% sure yet whether I'll build the animal houses, because they could also eat up a lot of performance.
I built walls out of stone. If I only use the fences, it looks a bit boring. This way the whole thing at least has a little charm.
Some impressions:

Good job, this reminds me of my childhood, when I would build my own zoo using a Pentium 4 computer.

Imagine fixing the finances and issues of your franchise zoo only for your finances to crash after you decorated for half an hour with your new found money because your only vet bugged and would not stop rubberbanding from the same habitat gate.
Fired her, gave her the job back, closed the game, restarted the pc, nah nothing all while going into cripling debt because of an escaped wisent scaring all the guests with no way of fixing it.
Hooray

Save to say i ported the zoo over to sandbox mode and will keep playing from their, not happy about it but i like my zoo and i got no save recent enough that makes me want to go back

Learned a valuable lesson about space planning. I made my tropical biome zoo far too large to handle the Oswald Eugene limit. I made 3 areas I’m really proud of, but they’re so spread out from each other that I’m finding it difficult to fill in the gaps. The counter is at 82%. I think I’m gonna have to demolish the boat ride and relocate all those animals to the mainland. I’m hemorrhaging money because a lot of the boat ride animals aren’t receiving donations because the only way to view them is via the ride. Deciding what to rip out is gonna be Sophie’s freakin’ choice. 😭

What is an oswald eugene limit?

It’s a build limit placed on console that ensures the game runs smoothly and won’t cause the system to overheat. After you reach 100% on the counter you can literally not add a single thing to your zoo, not even one scenery piece. It affects Planet Zoo way more than Planet Coaster due to the animals. In Planet Coaster you can make your parks much bigger.

Oh the complexity meter.
Man does it just look like this or is it really that bad? Your zoo doesnt really look that big but its already over 80%?
Maybe its just the top down viewpoint

It’s the Birds Eye view making it look smaller. lol. At ground level it’s quite large. I guess I could probably lower my animal count a bit to help the problem. I do have 10 each of Asian and African elephants plus 15 each of chimps, giraffes, Asian small clawed and giant otters.
