What did you do in Planet Zoo today?

Totally understand, I have the same with Pallas Cat - it is just so ugly to me. And I usually like weird animals, but the Pallas Cat gives me off-putting vibes for some reason, haha.
Yeah and i feel the same with tanukis and the Crested célebes Macaque so i understand your point haha i love quokkas though.

Giraffes and zebras are classic animals from old city zoos, so they had to be in Municeberg Zoo. Their enclosure is a combination of several old smaller enclosures, although the old brick style has been preserved. From the elevted walkway of the zoo, visitors have a nice view from giraffes' heads. I added the sable antelope too later, so it's not on the pics.

I think I might finally need to move on from my sandbox zoo. It's crashing constantly. Granted, it's BIG and its piece count must be monstrous, but I've seen zoos that felt even more detailed run just fine. It kinda started falling apart when I started adding climbing rigs...

After this one Amazonian building, as much as it pains me, I need to call it quits on Parc Le Bolle. It's been a ride but it's borderline unplayable at this point. :(

Wow, that’s very impressive. What animals live in the watery enclosure by the building with the white roof.

I feel sorry for that incomplete jungle cruise 🥲
But impressive zoo nonetheless!

Lets hope next update got some of those juicy juicy optimisation improvements, maybe it will allow the zoo to be atleast somewhat playable again

Have you tried getting rid of the animals to continue building? My completed large zoos with over 60 habitats are barely playable at 15fps but removing the animals boosts performance to 40-60fps again making building enjoyable again.

I think I might just have to get rid of all the monkeys I added, because I think they were the final nail in this zoo's coffin lol

I was convinced by a person to make some bird props for the workshop since my blueprints are gaining quite the following, up until yesterday I was sure that I suck at making custom animals, there was no way I'm skilled enough to build them... and yet again I've proved myself wrong. Thinking off bird models that were needed for the workshop, the bald eagle came to mind with just how common these are in north american zoos. I used existing eagle models on the workshop as inspiration and to study the materials to bring my very first custom made animal which is build as a full model, most workshop birds are only viewable from one side.

As expected bird models will look rather ugly up close, these birds are not designed at all to be viewed up close but rather from a distance.

Place the same eagle in a tree and view it from say 50 metres away and it looks much nicer, the 2 color textures work exactly as I planned as they blend together to make a realistic looking bald eagle.

This does mean a new prop megapack is coming, I am open to requests for anyone looking for a specific bird to add to their zoos as my list grows in size.

Damn. Mad respect, especially since its the first one.
Do you have plans to do a golden eagle, barn owl and common raven in the near future? Asking for a friend ... :D

Golden eagle is actually the very next one, along with the white tailed, wedge tailed, bateleur, african fish, harpy and Stellar's sea eagles. I'll add the owl and the raven to the list :D

How does one even begin with models like that? This is super impressive!

Thanks! It is quite a complicated process which I only started to understand after building so many realistic prop blueprints. The building method can be as follows:

20240410150821_1.jpg

  1. Build the feet first to get an idea of the size of the bird. Searching up the height and wingspan of the bird to scale it correctly.
  2. Gutter pipes are used together to form the body, slowly working the way up and curving to the birds shape.
  3. Build the head using the same method as the body, add the beak, eyes and detailing with gutter pipes sticking out to replicate the bald eagles iconic look.
  4. Build the wings out of gutter pipes and flat decals - like commas and full stops.
  5. Bulk out the back to join the wings together
  6. Add light brown decals to finish off the feather textures

Or You could remove all those background buildings to make room for more builds in the actual zoo.

Last night I got around playing a bit more! I don’t have pictures so I’ll try to explain what I did:

Before getting to the jungle of the Indonesia house there is a little themed walkthrough area. Earlier I was building temples in it. Last night I tried to up the anti with the theming. I made custom signs for the animals, as well as signs to explain: deforestation, plants that live off other plants, and Indonesian culture. You have to use your imagination, as the “text” is just a colored slat to look like writing. When I get home I can take pictures.
I also made two custom fake trees, one with the gibbons in it, the other with flying foxes.

TBH when I get around to it I’m probably gonna post in my zoos and education thread. Everything I’ve been doing has been inspired by that.

Have put in a lot work the past few days into this exhibit. Still not finished, but finally it starts to get the feeling I'm looking for. As mentioned a few days ago, this exhibit is for the Black rhinoceros. At the moment we are just having 2 of them, but the idea is to have a bull with two females. In the end decided that all three must be visible at all times.

The first exhibit you will be looking at is this one! Since this exhibit is at a dead end, this is the way our guests will get their first meeting with our rhinos. Most probable the rocks are too low, but I liked the view of it this way. Around 600 rocks have been placed to get this feeling. This is also the only exhibit which can be viewed from two points. From this side the building has also been covered in rocks, to give it a more natural look. This exhibit also has a natural pool.

The second exhibit you can view from inside the building, where you can also have a look at three stables of the rhinos. I'm used the same style as the door of the stable has to create viewing points into the exhibit. If you are lucky, the male is playing with his toy right in front of your nose! It also has a small pool.

The third exhibit is behind the building and should be for the second female. She can take a mud bath and rub hereself clean to the wall of poles. I still need to fill the ground with some foliage, but had no inspiration yet.

And hereby the new overview. You can see a gap in the building at the top, that will be fenced of and used for the keepers to enter the exhibit. Probably the viewing point at the right side will be enlarged and on the other side you will have a view into the exhibit of the spotted hyenas.
