What is the median CR balance for all commanders?

My guess is 2 billion credits.

The median of a set of numbers is that number where half the numbers are lower and half the numbers are higher. ... The average of a set of numbers is the total of those numbers divided by the number of items in that set. The median and the average might be close, but they could also significantly different.
The median is an average! I don't want to be mean but by "average" you probably mean the mean unless you mean the mode.

In the absence of better data try the Pareto (80:20) rule. Assume the average from posters here is your 20%, and that the other 80% of players never really get anywhere (<1mCr say).

Your median of all players is still going to be way down near the barely played end of the earnings spectrum though.
The "all commanders" requirement is interesting and if I had that list I would generate another CR balance report with fields such as "Active in past 3 months?, Access to Jameson Memorial?"

I haven’t been anywhere populated in a long while (over a year), and I am owed quite a bit by quite a lot of folks, including quite a few digits from a particular princess. ... That doesn’t sound quite right, but I’ll roll with it.

I’ve a large number of trade dividends, bounties, and of course, cartographic data to cash in as well, so I can’t even begin to guess.

That might give you a more helpful answer yes. ~100k active players, ~3m copies sold. I'm guessing you are interested in the active population.

"Median is robust to both skewness as well as outliers. Hence median has been by default the more popular choice to measure central tendency than mean. However if you are very sure that your data is not skewed at all and has near perfect bell shaped distribution, you can use mean. "

So, unless you are bell shaped, don't be mean :)

There must be a fair few accounts/CMDRs that never really got on with the game and never made much progress that are sitting at very low credit levels. I'd guess if you grouped everyone into some appropriate ranges you'd probably end up with something not a million miles away from a log-normal distribution

I'd say I'm below average (probably both median and definitely mean), a quick check on Inara shows I have 260.6m credits as cash and total assets of 483.3m.

Guess I'm in poverty, then. Over 300 hours logged, but my cash sits at about 25MCr right now. Admittedly because it was about 100M a few weeks ago, before I bought another ship, but I've never worked out how you all earn so much more than me.

I get a little uneasy with less than 10% cash in hand of my current assets. That's when I go mining.

I'm neurotic about keeping the last "billion" milestone I reached. Once I hit 8bil, I'll adjust my spending to not fall below that. It becomes the new baseline.

An analysis of Inara CMDRs was carried out some time ago:
Another interesting point of comparison:
Elite in Trade on Inara: 52.54%
Elite in Trade on EDSM/EDDN: 20.2%

Of course, it's a different cookie - a person who has just hit Elite in trade likely doesn't have one billion Cr on hand. It, with other statistics included, most likely just means that Inara's ratio of veteran CMDRs is higher.

Oh, and for one more data point: I have 1.5 billion Cr on hand, and 3.75 billion in assets.

Up till now? 1.1 Billion. Right now I'm at an all time low of 780 million. Which is not comfortable for my Cutter's rebuy. Which is more than what the ship originally sells for LOL
Also probably the reason I'll never own a carrier. I reckon those will be Billions!

Think I'm around 7.7B credits and 12B assets, but have been playing since launch day and have grinded some. I'd say the bulk of funds are from partaking in some "illegitimate" activities, including snagging several free Anacondas from Hutton Orbital back when that was in vogue. I regret nothing.

I'm sitting on 4.6Bn with just shy of 11Bn total assets, but I'm well aware that I'm up in the 1%. Most people I know that have played the game a bit before moving on to other things tend to get into the mediums, or maybe grab themselves one of the big three, before they're happy that they've "won".
