Elite / Frontier What other space games are there?

Well I couldn't see the mechanics working quite as nicely as Frontier with jump gates and all that. As pretty as the game models are (and they are pretty) the game play itself is pap in my opinion. The X games are just a bit Meh. Now if the graphics engine could be ported over to the Frontier game play then that would be an acceptable stopgap :D

Not a game, but a stunning space simulator that lets you fly around our solar system.

If they'd made it multi-system, we could've written a plug-in or two...

Plus, you can hop around in the Tardis, or Thunderbird 2

Fun, if you're into the space flight side of things. Very realistic (they say - I haven't had the opportunity to compare).

Still not Elite IV, though :(

Orbiter is rather good. I've learned everything I know about orbital mechanics from that game. And that's even after doing a degree in astrophysics.

Personally I am still trying to figure out the Space Shuttle Mission demo [http://www.space-shuttle-mission.com/]. I am having trouble landing the damn thing

Just keep the diamond in the centre of the square on the HUD, and you'll land perfectly every time... ;)

I often play Orbiter, you just can't find more realistic space simulation unless you are working already in the NASA or similar organisation ;)

Sometime i really wished there was an Elite 4 that would use Orbiter as its basis for physics and the ship simulation. I doubt anyone would hear about me anymore if such game existed :D

Recently i went again in a loop playing the various Elite.
-ArcElite, thanks to the Red Squirrel archimedes emulator
-Frontier : Elite 2, thanks to DOSBox with my XP laptop (too bad the OpenGL version does not work on my old system that has a window 9x OS, it always ran old games better than my XP laptop)
-Frontier : First Encounter thanks to JFFE (sometime with the nic OpenGL 1.3 mod as it is superb with it)

And frankly, despite ArcElite is the best Elite 1 version ever made due to the improvements the AI has over the PC versions, i wondered how i could be so interested in it in my youth (and i lost countless of nightly hours to it).

Now that i tried other space games, i find that Elite 1 just features incredibly frustrating and simply "unfun" gameplay, space combat was hard in FFE due to the AI appearing out of nowhere around you (it was easier in FE2 as the AI was way less accurate in its shots), but in Elite1 it is not even remotely interesting to fight.

I believe the main responsible was the left/right making the ship to roll that actually ruin the game for me today.
Making arcade flight physics like in Elite1 is not really a problem (i had a very lot of fun in Freespace 2 despite its physics are completely arcade), but having arcade physics mixed with entirely unintuitive flight controls is a definitive no no today.

I can't imagine anyone that would really have fun today with the Elite 1 controls now if he has played lot of other space sims since that time.

But now talking about FE2 and FFE despite their old age are always as good, they are always like in my memory and i had great fun while replaying it, quickly finding my old reflexes, trade routes and flying around space stations while trying not to crash into the structures :D

FE2 and FFE are really piece of genius to have stand the test of the time after all those years, something unfortunately Elite 1 did not for me.

I continue to hope there will be an Elite4.

Lots of other elite-like games have been released bringing some good new ideas (build your own fleets and industry in X-Tension/X2 , lots of ships doing their own stuff in Freelancer etc...) and some bad (repetitive missions in Freelancer, every sector looking the same in X-Tension/X2, etc..) , i hope Elite 4 will use the good ideas and not the bad.

I can't see what's embarrassing about it.
A couple of characters leeched from popular culture, but that's about it.
Why would they withdraw it?

Who knows, I'm quite keen on it and hope that they release a higher res version or that they make more. That or we do when the Beta starts. All you need is fraps and to build up enough scenes, the fun then is piecing them together to make something good.

edit: I think that vid got pulled...

I dont know if anyone already wrote this... but you also have the Wing Commander series. Even though it follow a storyline, it's still a really good game series.

I have read that some people are experimenting with multiplayer coding in Orbiter. If something good is done about this, it could be very enjoyable to fly with friends in this simulator.

A good point of Orbiter is the community content, considering the amount of addons floating around (i even found some new systems and planets available), it is difficult to not find something new when you want it.
From realistic recreation of shuttles/stations/objects/etc.. to complete scifi additions, there is always something for everyone in Orbiter.

For the Elite serie fans, you can even fly a Cobra MK3 !

For people finding real physics too hard (but i suggest them to not give up, after a few training flying in Orbiter feels very natural and even more interesting because of the real physics) and would prefer more arcade ones, i noticed an addon that enable starwar-like physics (in which you fly in the direction you face without any regards to newtonian physics and inertia).

But the really good thing in that addon is that the basic laser weapon to try, if more developped it could lead into the possibility of some kind of combat support in Orbiter.
And if multiplayer become a reality, it could open Orbiter to completely new level of popularity, as i am sure some people have ignored it because is was only solo play.

While certainly not a sim, flatspace (lostinflatspace.com) is a really fun game that's been tiding me over for a few months now. It's a bit of a rougelike in space. There's flatspace 2 now as well, which adds quite a few features, though I haven't tried it out yet.

Trading is a bit tough I find, but bounty hunting or assasinations can be fun, as can mining asteroids. If you need eye candy though, it's not for you.

I've been trying to find this older (I'm guessing around '90s) single-player, 2D space trader/combat game that I played a little as a kid, but I have yet to find it. During this search, however, I ran across this forum and was excited to see all of these lists of other games to look into. Unfortunately I still haven't found the right one. The closest I found was Jack of All Trades, which I had to try the demo of before determining it wasn't what I was looking for. In general it seemed very similar, though the game I'm looking for has slightly better graphics and maybe a little slower gameplay (i.e. the ships didn't seem to move quite so fast). The one specific thing that I remember about the game was the ability to disable ships (by causing enough damage w/o destroying them), board them and then a dialogue box would pop up asking if you wanted to attempt to steal the cargo or take over the ship (not sure if there was another option). If you took over the ship, you could either add it as sort of a convoy or make it your main ship.

Anyways, a mix of random clues for you to go on, but that's all I've got at the moment. Any other suggestions for me to look at?

Thanks.

I've been trying to find this older

Hum Tricky:Off hand the only one I can think of with boarding of ship without destroying them is a rpg space trader called Hard Nova http://www.mobygames.com/search/quick?game=hard+nova&p=-1&search=Go

Can't remember if you can board ships in these games, but it could be one the solar wind games http://www.mobygames.com/search/quick?game=solar+winds&p=-1&search=Go or the Mac only game Escape Velocity http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/ev/

Oh noes, not again. :D

Oh yes he is. Love that quote on his site "Expanding the boundaries of the space sim genre"

Spacegamer...you wonderful, beautiful genius! You have squashed the gnat of a mystery that had been pestering me for too long. The game was, in fact, Escape Velocity. Or EV Override. I can't quite tell from the screenshots. As you noted, however, both of those are Mac only. I'm not sure if I want to try to figure out how to get them to run on my PC, but a possibly even better solution comes in the form of EV Nova, which has a PC version! Oh man, I can't wait to get home and try these out. Ohhh, and it's littered with MST3K references...what more could you ask for in a game?

Spacegamer...I, I don't know what to say. I bow down before your encyclopidic space gamer knowledge. Thank you.
