What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Someone here, know if it is possible to play simultaneously with keyboard, mouse and joystick?

Joystick for flying and fighting and keyboard / mouse for all the rest?

:)

That depends entirely on the game I think.

I too hope for fully configurable keys in E: D. Relying on Windows or a 3rd party solution isn't a good one, because of (again) latency in the game. The best way all round is to have it configurable within the game.

I intend to play with the keyboard and mouse, but now I know that the Xbox 360 joystick controller is PC compatible, so I probably will try. I read that this controller is very easy to install and is fully compatible with most games, both on the console and on the PC. I can only speak about Windows.
Frontier will almost certainly just utilise the standard Windows input controls, which means you can swap around as you see fit. Certainly I'm expecting that I'll be able to use any of X52 keyboard & mouse almost interchangably.

I'm hoping all controls can be mapped in-game. That way people can assign functions to all buttons on all (exotic) types of controllers, including start and select buttons.

I hope so too. It does save alot of hassle from installing the controller's own software (if it has it) which can never be fully relied on, which is another reason I like the plug and play convenience of a gamepad. Since the Xbox 360 gamepads came out, I've liked how they've been good all-rounder gaming devices for both console and PC.

I do have a couple of joysticks, but never liked using them. I still have a Microsoft Sidewinder 2, which is a big, sturdy joystick with force feedback. Also a CyborgX Fly5, again another decent joystick, but I tend not to use them much and always opt for the gamepad.

Thank you for your answers. With keyboard + mouse + joystick, we should be able to face the challenges that await us in the game

Well I've had a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Force Feedback for donkeys years and it's still going strong. It's got plenty of programmable buttons and throttle. It's all I've ever needed for flight-sims and the like.

I guess there will parts in the game that will suit keyboard and mouse (planned expansions), and navigating the galactic map and stock-markets will no doubt be much easier with mouse and keyboard.

Yep, they don't make 'em like that anymore, and a Microsoft product as well! The rubber coating is starting to peel on the stick, but there's nothing wrong with it. I think if, on the odd occassion, I did decide to use a joystick, that would be the one I'd opt for.

I've got used to my trusty 360 pad on the PC.

Microsoft have confirmed that the new Xbox One pad will be fully compatible with the PC by early 2014. I presume it's an improvement over the 360 pad and should make an excellent controller for ED.

I've found using a controller does work well combined with keyboard short cuts.

Hey Brian, just picked up one of those from a garage sale - itching to give it a go on E D. In what way does it add immersion? As far as I can see it has no feedback function or I am I missing something (like a manual ;) )

I'm using the x52 while playing old games at the moment and although it doesn't have force feedback. The feel of the joystick and the throttle is very smooth and the fact that it has enough buttons that you can map most keyboard functions to it, adds a little bit more immersion to the game.

Most space sims have similar functions, so once your used to using the second hat for target selection, then it's easy enough to set the stick up like that for all your games.

Sorry, must have missed this post. I just think that it adds by the feel of the thing. You wouldn't be flying a real plane with a mouse or keyboard would you? Also I like the shiny LED's and the loads of buttons switches and knobs which you can map to whatever you need in 99% of games.

Brian :)

Just bought a Saitek X52 second hand on eBay. :)

There are a few around, and plenty bargains to be had if you want to go down that route.

I've still got a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 sitting around somewhere.

If the drivers still work, I'll be giving that a go.

The Sidewinder works with Win7 64 bit HOWEVER you cant use the old software to program the buttons or set up the FFB

Indeed. As have I, got one for 36 pounds plus postage. Not too bad I think - as long as it works of course.

Currys.co.uk ae doing brand spanking new Saitek X52s for just a penny less that 80 quid. £79.99 reduced from 109.99.

But the force feedback works on Win7, even on the test area it has, otherwise it would just be a loose stick.

Although, people using old controllers is another good reason why there should be ingame controller configuration.

Ah, that was you. I bid on that one, and figured I'd check it before the end and then had to go to the shops & missed it by 5 minutes. Kicking myself I was... :D

I am hoping for keyboard and mouse controls. Never liked joysticks and the only controller I have tried was on my nephews Xbox, I do not like them either.

I should have said "adjust" the force feedback. Still you can always use Fedit for that ;)
