I originally planned to eventually get a gamepad (probably XBox) for ED, after playing it with mouse and keyboard for some time, I am quite confident I can do well with that setup instead. The disadvantages can be mostly made up with gimballed weapons (I think the reason why they were introduced in the first place was to accomodate input methods that are nowhere as precise as a proper joystick/HOTAS equipment), and I've already gotten used to the roll/pitch flight style with the mouse.
My tips for anyone who wants to try it with a mouse, with these it feels really good:
- Keep the default positioning method, only invert axis if desired
- Yaw into roll OFF
- Remap increase/decrease throttle to mouse wheel, wheel click to set throttle to zero. Adjust throttle increment as you see fit, for my G400s mouse I found 10% quite natural.
- Rebind W and S to vertical thrusters (i.e. up and down for evading collisions and landing/take-off) since you can use the mouse wheel to adjust throttle much more effectively.
