What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

Speedlink Competition Pro

Golden one is the 25th anniversary special, got one as a Christmas present a couple of years ago. :)

ITS REAL! I thought you were joking, who did that to you?
did you want one?

Mind you it's stuff like that which will be worth money a few years later

I remember seminal space shooter Star Raiders on the old Atari. It even came with it's own keypad peripheral for extra functionality. Pre-Elite it was exactly like flying a real space ship in the future.

I had to look to remind me of the game, I did play it (borrowed game)
but at the time it was amazing stuff.

we have come a long way my brothers,

so lets bow our heads and give thanks for ultra high speed graphics and colours beyond 8/16.
and for breaking the barriers of cartridge systems.

Oh and for Microsoft dropping conventional memory
( It did my swede in editing config.sys etc)

anyone else like to say a few words?:)

A good friend of mine gave it. He knows me well enough, he said that when he saw the stick in a store window, he immediately knew what to give me next Christmas (about a month away then), he knew I would love the present. At that time I didn't know they exist, but if I had known, I would very much have wanted one! :D

I still remember the blisters from the original Atari 'Nelsons Column' style joysticks. Don't forget the Binatone twiddly potentiometer controls for everything from squash to er, doubles tennis. And Tac2's. Had at least three of those.

Whatever happened to the Voltmace(?) sticks for the original BBC figpilt?

:)

I just got myself the Razer Sabertooth gamepad - and it is working great. I also have a Saitek X52 Pro but I found it way too imprecise and I was having trouble keeping targets in the crosshairs - jusat seemed to be all over the place. I use the X52 Pro for flight sims and have had no problems - works a treat in War Thunder.

The Razer Sabertooth just feels more precise and easier to get the ship to point where you want to point it. Downside - there's no throttle slider so you have to map either buttons or the thumbsticks which can get a little hairy when you try and undock and all of a sudden your seriously bumping into things :)

Just my 2 cents worth.

Is that the one with adjustable analogue sticks?

Does it have analog trigger buttons? Maybe that would be a way to have analog speed / breaks. Dunno if it can be mapped that way in ED though.

A gamepad with adjustable non-linear thumbstick response could actually be pretty good for Elite. That could result in enough precision for non-gimballed aiming even.

I originally planned to eventually get a gamepad (probably XBox) for ED, after playing it with mouse and keyboard for some time, I am quite confident I can do well with that setup instead. The disadvantages can be mostly made up with gimballed weapons (I think the reason why they were introduced in the first place was to accomodate input methods that are nowhere as precise as a proper joystick/HOTAS equipment), and I've already gotten used to the roll/pitch flight style with the mouse.

My tips for anyone who wants to try it with a mouse, with these it feels really good:

- Keep the default positioning method, only invert axis if desired
- Yaw into roll OFF
- Remap increase/decrease throttle to mouse wheel, wheel click to set throttle to zero. Adjust throttle increment as you see fit, for my G400s mouse I found 10% quite natural.
- Rebind W and S to vertical thrusters (i.e. up and down for evading collisions and landing/take-off) since you can use the mouse wheel to adjust throttle much more effectively.

I'd assume so, the 360 controller from Microsoft has analogue triggers. Would be odd if a third party one that's supposed to be better didn't.

GF's joystick arrived yesterday, turns out it's a FLY 5.

It's a nice enough thing, no issues that some have reported, but I can't help but laugh whenever I use the throttle.

It's teeny! Throwing a Cobra into full ahead and smacking boost on the X52pro actually gives a sensation of unleashing power. Same action on the Fly5 feels like turning on a flashlight lol

Ordered Voiceattack for her too, now on to choosing a headset she won't lose :)
