Why Advanced Docking & Supercruise Assist is Worth IT

Sure, and I’m not certain that it is an exploit.

.. not sure it's an exploit either.
Still possible to overspeed, finding the optimal autocruise window probably takes more skill than manually surfing six.
Wouldn't be without full auto on some builds myself either. 'Tis luxury Commanders!

Like in any flight simulator, approach and landing (or docking) is the best part of flight, so I would never use a docking (or undocking) computer. Its pretty much the only part of most flights where I actually have to do any flying, regardless of it being second nature by now. If this game didn't have manual docking (like Evochron for instance) I would have grown bored of it long ago, it would be mostly just staring at countdowns and clicking station menus. In fact, I wish regular gameplay involved a lot more actual flying in more diverse conditions and scenarios. Even when docking, we spawn almost on top of the pad already...

However, if others prefer to use docking automation, it's their choice, I don't care one yota nor make any kind of judgements about it.

The supercruise assist on the other hand is a blessing. It automates the most boring part (flying in a straight line). I can alt-tab and continue to browse the web until I hear the supercruise disengaged sound.

It's a challenge for me to be able to get that pass-out, can't walk or see straight drunk before my body decides to revolt.

I was able to get myself wedged in a station once in a Viper, I think, back in 2015 and cleaned up by station security. Tequila or rum may have been involved.

Piloting my ships manually probably helps keep me focused instead of just wandering off and running out of fuel in supercruise or something.

These modules are handy where you dock very often (say, on a trader, especially outposts as looking for your pad can be a bit irritating at times), or USS hopping (you bung on the SC assist, and can then check the galmap, external camera, or web browser without fear of overshooting). Auto-launch is more hassle than it's worth though.

If I have the available free slot I also fit the SC assist on my explorer ships, as the auto-orbit function is pretty neat for sightseeing, DSS probing (if you need more than 6-8 probes to hit) and screenshots.

I respect my time in this game too much to use either. I find hands-on flying to be both fun and fast, and it has advantages over automation. In the case of Supercruise, hands on flying greatly reduces the window during which you can be interdicted. In the case of docking, listening to the indignant squawks of ATC as you sneak in around a Beluga at high rates of speed, completely secure in the knowledge that as a member of the Pilots Federation there’s nothing they can do about it, is rather amusing. :D

The docking computer still isn't reliable. Last night, I dropped out at a rescue ship and asked for docking permission. The landing pad was somewhere on the other side, so I thought I'd let the DC find it. It boosted me straight into the end of the rescue ship, knocking me down to 30% hull, then looked like it was lining up for a second attempt, so I had to take back control.

Second attempt? I'm afraid your ship was trying to commit suicide. Was it an ASP Scout by any chance?

Asking for trouble, like expecting to get a clean localizer intercept at a 90 degree angle, just not happening.

The ADC is pretty cool with the HCS Voice Packs.

Fly up to a station, tell Verity to “take us in” and she takes over from there.

Notching is when flying perpendicular to doppler radar. Since the radar relies on velocity rate changes to detect stuff you can mask yourself from the radar. Something like that. Same with flying into same direction at same speed.

Haha, oh wow, have never heard of that, cheers for the info. Looked up notching, was something to do with metal cutting.
