Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

Because they want us to be interested in their products and services, to be aware of and purchase their current products and accrue goodwill towards any they make in the future.

Its not about throwing faces, its about marketing goodwill. Where are you?
One persons broken mess is another’s greatest game of all time.
The more accurate assessment is probably somewhere in between.
This forum doesn’t reflect that because the drama rises to the top.
So we end up be rather irrelevant to the whole process.

Okay. What games are you talking about and please don't say NMS or X4, thats not the type of space legs I want to see in the game as they are both barebones.
NMS is many things, but I wouldn't call it barebones.

We can add Subnautica to that list, another great game with pretty amazing "legs" made by a small developer. Every time I'm in my Cyclops, I find myself wishing I could walk around, interact with, and customize my ships in Elite in a similar way. I love my Cyclops!

But that's just me.

Surely that depends on the type of criticism and the delivery.
Of course...but is that not standard in all game forums?

Having played many games over the years and inhabited many forums in that time I don't see this one being any different or any more 'toxic', it seems fairly standard to me if somewhat restrained compared to others I've read.

I don't think forum criticism provides a valid excuse for lack of communication from FD.

Neither is being overly defensive of FD...how does that help?

If their skin is so thin they can't handle criticism then they chose the wrong industry to work in. Go on any game forum, it is exactly the same yet not every developer decides to withdraw into their shells and stop talking to their customers.

This forum was designed for discussion and feedback...that is what they got.
Yep, this forum was designed for discussion. So I suggest people stop calling everyone a white knight, fanboy or FDEV apologist just because they have a different opinion on something.

NMS has got good basic movement and you can also swim, dive and now ride animals. You can't jump, crouch or other stuff, which are irrelevant to my vision of legs. FDEV with their team could make much more than that considering the number of employees they have.

Anyway I was referring for example to Subnautica.

I would. I have the game too. If you only had that level of use in a game such as the witcher or skyrim it would be called crap and barebone. Most of the time is spend aimlessly running around and shooting at rocks. But there maybe more, but I haven't got that far in to the game as it is so boring. For me anyway.

Oh, its a very good, but extremely small game in a tiny game world. I also think subnautica is great, but is tiny compared to the massive area of ED, the stations, the outposts, the ships, the planets etc.

But that's just me.
And that is fine.

To be fair, that's a pretty accurate description of the SRV gameplay...

Agreed

Subnautica, a great, but extremely small game in the grand scheme of things. It is not even remotely comparable to the vastness that is ED.

Actually I don't agree with this.

Take Engineers for example...if nobody had said anything, if we all remained silent, FD would have thought they'd released a winning update. It's only because the forums kicked off and vented at FD that they actually sat up and took notice. It took a long time to fix and I'd argue it's still awful but it's so much better than it was...that is the power of feedback, it is proven to work and not just in this game.

You can try to silence the moaners if you like but it is that feedback which drives improvements to the game. You can argue that the volume and tone of that feedback needs adjusting but afaik nobody has a fix for human nature...yet.

Incremental development was ditched in favour of a completed update precisely because of the forum backlash. We’re now complaining about that!?
I’m confident if FD went full disclosure on everything they’re working on,the forum would reach critical mass and turn into a bowl of Petunias!

Whoa max, do you honestly think space legs is not going to be bare bones? Have a crack at jurassic world evolution for what to expect. Probably less since frontier can discount for existing players and pure technical difficulties they were not able to solve (tried and died).

Are we talking about NMS or ED? I totally agree, driving around and shooting at rocks is boring (in ED, anyway). Though even Skyrim let you bash rocks with a pickaxe.
