ED has failed to meet even the half promoted views of Braben during KS.. I realise things change over time but I'm not playing the same game that was pitched. For starters its become overwhelmingly story driven, and the 'story' has almost always been of an asci text variety.
There was a moment in time where things changed and it was around the launch of the game.. When it stopped being crowd funded, with Braben going against his previously stated strategy, and 'Frontier' took ownership of it..
ED isn't a bad game, its just a failure of its own meagre ambition and now a cash cow for shareholders.. I could go on but its pointless to delve further.
Look what Breadbins accomplished pretty much single-handedly in FE2.
Then he formed FDevs. Their first title? FFE. Premature release debacle notwithstanding, what does FFE actually accomplish? Basically, with all the bugs ironed out, FFE is a ruined, messy version of FE2, just with awful ship designs, a bizarrely broken GUI, and a bunch of hand-coded missions awkwardly synched to the calendar, rather than triggered at the player's leisure.
So right from their inception, FDevs influence on the Elite franchise has been purely detrimental to the game's development and gameplay.
Then, having royally muffed it, they proceeded to utterly abandon their own flagship title for 20 years.. they
could've been capitalising on it throughout. Could've been the biggest thing in gaming back through the noughties and nineties, when we were desperate for an updated sequel, with little but X and Jumpgate to fill the gap.. FD just sat on it. No releases. No reliable communication on progress. A few claims of good intentions from Breadbins in interviews, but not. a. sausage. For 20 years.
What did we really expect from an Fdevs
Elite sequel?
How can one man working alone set the bar so high that not even his own company can improve on it, for two decades? I can't help but think if He'd only stayed solo, ED would be as breathtaking, immersive and groundbreaking as FE2 was to classic Elite.
But you're right, it's pointless to keep kicking thru the ashes... there's no more answers.. no more questions.. it is what it is. Rock'n'roll genius inevitably fades into pitiful sell-out, as it ever was, and all things considered we should probably be thankful for our spangly new cardboard
Elite effigy. :| At least he hasn't sold the franchise to Disney, yet.
