Horizons Would you like to build your own base in Elite Dangerous?

Would love to have my own base with hanger on a planet. But first i would like to get up out of my seat.
and change my name to John-117.

Sound like fun to me ..

Can I be a rock hermit, set lots of traps versus visitors and stockpile, materials I've mined and Lavian Brandy??

I think the desire to be able to call a place your own may be most easily satisfied if your ship itself had living quarters as has been mentioned, accessible once we get to walk around.

Do you really need a remote base with landing pads? What alternative ships do you need deep space? You really just need an exploration fit when you're way out there....you won't be doing mining unless you have somewhere to sell the metals. Even today, we can land on a moon and log off, so in that sense, it's *your* moon.

This! I see my ship as my home, too. Given the size of even the smallest Sidewinders, there is more than enough room for some more or less - depending on the ship - small pilot cabins or crew quarters. IMHO, the day we will be able to walk around our own ships and perhaps even customize them with some vanity items from the Frontier store will be a great day for exploration - because we will really finally feel much more connected to our ships, accept them much more as our homes within the game and will generally greatly increase the "bonding" between us and our ships!

Some kind of housing / renting space station / renting or buying hangars or whatever you want to call it, is definetly needed in this game in the future. There are currently too many people in the billions of credits, with nothing to do with them, and we're in the first year in the game. A couple more years down the road, most people will need something to invest in, or they will leave.

To me this just shows people doing nothing else but hoarding credits played the game in a way that from the beginning wasn't it's intended playstyle.

Yes. I would like to be able to collect filled escape pods and take them back to my base where I can enslave/imprison them and force them to wash my underpants while I'm out killing things.

I would like to be able to attack other people's launch pads territoriality if someone decided to come and try to destroy my prison and steal my slaves for profit

This is the sort of thing I would like.

Hahaha fair enough!

Having your own 'pad' would be awesome!! Being able to design your own hangar, purchase security defenses, early warning signals, hire NPC's to protect the facility etc....

Varieties could include:
1. Bases on planets of different designs, underground, underwater, above ground, floating in the sky,
2. Asteroids, mobile, immobile,
3. Apartments, hangars in existing stations.

We were supposed to have asteroid bases. A clock is being added soon, so bases must be on the way right?

Seriously though, don't hold your breath for player bases, it took almost two years to get a clock, I don't think there's time in the ten year plan for bases.

what was its intended playstyle?

A playstyle where you can fly a spaceship and fight, explore or trade, whatever is the most fun to you and where credits are a mean to achieve your goals, not the goal itself. ED is not a financial simulation, even if some players try to play it like one.

Sure it is a financial simulation,it's a sandbox, so it's whatever you choose it to be within the included features. Finances is not only a feature it's paramount to the game. It's not "only" that but, clearly many find it fun and it's just as important as flying and shooting.

I understand your desire to have your playstyle improved but, let's not do it to the detriment of others playstyles. [heart]

Just like mr. Braben said, the game should never become about reading excel files and leaving your computer on while you're out having a pint - so no economy in these bases whatsoever. I'm glad to see that you guys want storage only bases, and that's something I didn't know I wanted until I started reading this. O' good Lord.

Maybe not craft the base but just buy it - being able to buy different modules/rooms would be awesome. So we could have all of our ships stored in the same place, and some tiny square in the galaxy we can call home...

And war. And getting your base distroyed, and blowing up other bases. Uhm...

Well, that's a nice dream to have. I don't think that could be added into the game, however - for practical reasons that have alreday been presented in this thread. But about buying your own space in stations... That can be really cool. Well, let's still dream about this.

Why not bases for those who want them; modules can be added (at cost) to do anything that can be done in station (a hangar for every ship I store with pads for visitors, I can also offer missions), perhaps the base can also mine and manufacture, of course the base would need supplies and personnel.

I wouldn't want my base to be lost to attack, but perhaps that is an "opt in" option.

And how cool would the busy planets be with lots of bases and lots of flights?

It doesn't matter if you don't want to have a base, just ignore mine...

I'd like to see things like asteroid bases come along with the much needed improvement to piracy mechanics. ie: A pirate can improve their reputation, gain access to hidden/special bases where they can then sell goods for a higher/better prices on their black markets. Maybe also get more interesting/rewarding missions too!

Why? Who would want to go to your base? To do what?

Early warning signals to achieve what? They're in solo or group or going there when you're offline? And what if the "protection" fails? What can a Wing of players do once they're in your base?

All sounds a bit vapid and one of those ideas that sounds "cool" (aka when I can walk around my ship) but risks creating rather dull/pointless/problematic gameplay? And all at the expense of development time in areas that need attention more urgently... eg: Simply more varied/interesting missions/tasks/occupations.

Since money is the only measure of advancement you actually have in the game, I would say it's quite important, and the way money comes and goes in the game should be monitored and "crafted" by game mechanics very carefully. Aside from that, as you correctly say, some people are playing the game motivated by credits, and that's perfectly valid. Not everybody plays "for fun", and there's not a playstyle that's better than others, or "intended for the game" as you say.

But anyway, what I was trying to say was that, even if you don't play for the money, sometime down the road you're going to have too much money, and when everybody has too much money and nothing to do with it, most people in need of a sense of advancement loose motivation and stop playing.

Would I want to? Not presently no, but I certainly can see the attraction to have something other than just a fleet of ships to sink ones money into.

Not to "blast your own trail" you mean?
The more tools to blast with, the better. :)

whatever is the most fun to you
So; if some, like me, see it as fun to build their own bases....?
