Horizons Would you like to build your own base in Elite Dangerous?

I think it would be a very interesting idea to be able to build your own Station, outpost, or planetary port, or just a Base you could use as a werehouse and have stock on ammo, or be able to repair your ship, it would be a lot more interesting when we are able to walk around the base with our avatars, besides the risk of having players attacking or raiding player owner bases, just like we do with the NPC ports, i think it would be really great feature.

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I think it would be a great addition, but perhaps not one that should come before a lot of other more pressing issues/fixes. But yeah - I'm down with building Casa Jenner somewhere.

No, Elite Dangerous is about being a lone pilot finding your way in a massive galaxy. The day they allow player bases is the day I stop playing.

I'm pretty much on this ^^ line too. Base building is not Elite, more an X-series kind of thing.

And for gods sake get this part working right, and make it immersive and dynamic and stable, before even thinking about adding boring player housing to yet another online game...

You know...and I apologize right off if this is too far off topic, but...I see people asking for loot, crafting, player housing, raids and "super hard end game content" in every online game I become involved with. But this isnt what puzzles me.

No. What puzzles me is this: You had these same mechanics in every one of the online games you're already bored with. So...you come to a new game and...ask for the same things again?

Not that this is necessarily what the OP is going for here. Probably in this instance he or she is thinking more Eve Online and less WoW/every MMO Ever; I get that. But this trend is just something I do not understand...

We need this in the future, if we limit this game to a space trucking/GTA sim then I think that's a mistake.
Building a base on a planet for your ships is a natural progression.

Goodbye...

I would love to have my own small base, which could add allot of game-play and crafting.

I don't see why having a base would change anything else about the game, it would only add the game it would not take away from the experience.

It is not like you would be required to make one,,, just like I do not get into mining, but people do.. not like I am going to ask them to remove something just because I do not do that activity.

Elite is the freedom to do what you want. :p

People seem to be getting confused with a small player owned base to store ships and modules and player owned stations and massive planetary installations. I'm all for a small personal base, which basically has a hanger for your ships, a storage area for modules and a small living area for when you get the FPS mode. Have them come with an impenetrable shield so nobody can destroy them etc. I can't see any problems with that as long as it doesn't influence the BGS. You could even expand them to have up to four landing pads so if you have a wing of four they can all land at the same base.

More options of things to do is always nice. That being said, I am not too eager to play house in Elite.
But would be great to know the option is there.

What's funny is that I say I would like it, but I remember housing in LOTRO. I got a house, and never went there in the end. There was pretty much no use for it.

I would like to have an actual hangar to walk around and admire my ships.

Have you tried Star Citizen? ;)

Only if I can have a little wooden shack on a lake beneath some mountains, where I can hunt wild beast in a survivalist type setting :)

Personally, I am not interested in seeing player-owned bases any more than I want to see guild-owned bases. I would like to see player-owned or leased facilities aboard stations or outposts though, something akin to Star Citizen's hangar. I believe Elite is about you being an individual pilot, a 'Han Solo' type figure, and I don't think owning a whole base or station fits that too well. At least not without NPCs to populate it (to enable management of a 'facility' akin to Lando Calrissian's Cloud City perhaps) - but if we can't even have NPC crew for our ship and there's no NPC 'life' in the stations in-game now, I think we're sometime off being able to consider it. And I would strongly argue that if you really want to own your own station or base, populated by NPCs maintaining operations, then you need to be the manager and play the game being that manager, constantly overseeing operations. That becomes a business management game instead of you doing what Elite is about in my opinion - flying the stars. Maybe that's what some might want to do, but that's not Elite. Owning something smaller, like a hangar or warehouse, a small mining site (ala a small lease akin to the old gold rush days) or even a landing pad, makes more sense to me.

In this universe wouldn't be we living on the ship?

In which case I'd LOVE to see a personal quarters outfitting module. Allow us to walk around on our ship and customize our living space on the ship. This would be amazing on things like the Cutter and Corvette.

$0.02

Space legs are on the list. Customization of living quarters would be a nice touch, really.

Just keep in mind you don't need a Corvette or Cutter to have decent space. A Sidewinder is 21x15m, compare that with a basketball court's 28x15m. Even the smaller ship in this game is huge. More than enough room there for decent accommodations.

I was originally against this

However, after playing Horizons for a while, I changed my mind. I think the ability to put a temporary base somewhere would be great. I would also like to be able to put science stations around the galaxy. Furthermore, a luxury hotel where I shuttle the clients to and from would be awesome.... So, yes, I think a structure somewhere would be pretty cool. However, it should become a POI and able to be destroyed by others.. So that same luxury hotel becomes a morgue when pirates attack and I'm not there to defend it.

I don't think owning massive stations or bases is the way, but who is wrong with a personal base with no facilities except for personal storage which doesn't interact with the BGS. The odds of someone apart from the owner bumping into it would be pretty slim. Therefore there really is no difference between that and a hanger in a station.

In ARK we have now a pretty large base being operated only by two guys. We have a descent defense and are approaching end game at level 70. Reaching level 85 is still the goal, but we are still rebuilding and adding to the base if we need. As the base needs to be maintained I am logging in 2-3 times a day to check stuff and refill fuel/ammo. Its amazing how much depth agency can create in a game, although I now feel the grind in the game, but as the base is built and all the dinosaurs are tamed by us, it still feels unique and special.
If Frontier can add something like this in E.D along with persistent NPCs and crafting. It would be awesome. And they could sell base skins and types on their site. Well the possibilities are endless. I am glad many others like the idea of bases in E.D But first 2.1 and this seasons pass. MMOs which are being updated and developed on the fly are becoming more and more popular and generates huge revenues for gaming companies if they can get it right. Frontier is surely on the right path.

As we have gotten Planetary Landings would you like to build your own base anywhere you want. This could be an excellent credit sink and also include crafting and loot. Some base modules you buy and some you craft. If you have played ARK you know what I mean. If I had a base somewhere in the Elite Dangerous universe I would use more time on it, and many others would to.

What do you think?

Nope, if I wanted to build my own base or empire, I'd be playing X3.

There is a little something that makes me think that a small base where I could store my personal stuff would be pretty cool. From my perspective I don't feel part of any particular system. I can't be bothered with local factions or the main politcal bodies, and I detest PP. But the idea of a personal base (one that only I could access), somewhere that I can call home, somewhere to look foward to after tootling around the galaxy, is kind of cool. :)

I would love to be able to set up a private landing pad on a planet I had first discovered. It could be my remote ship store or bolt-hole. Somewhere to be based when the Thargoids invade known space perhaps......
