I tried researching and marking the number of system names to do with Astronomy/Space/etc.... and it's always bugged me the string of stars from Barnard's loop which points directly at the bubble as far as I can see...
Here's some examples you can search on surname (mostly!).... I spent some time just looking at names for star systems in that area and learned a bit about them...the lists below are not exhaustive and these will have been manually named for some reason...??
*there are other astronomers/etc as system names in the bubble too and of course there are loads of stations with famous people's names scattered about too...

Those lines of stars are from real world star surveys, where a telescope is pointed in one direction to analyse a whole bunch of stars.This is why the lines point at sol. Look at spitzer surveys, for instance. They just came in with the star catalogues..

I see from the latest newsletter that there is to be a livestream (16th?) to celebrate 5 years of the game. DB will almost certainly be involved; now is the time to polish the question set! They need to be short, pointed, and well designed to elicit sensible answers! I rarely do livestreams...

Pretty much every commander i know is out there searching on their own when they get free time, would be pretty poor if it could only be accessed as a group activity.

We have to remember as well that pre-launch DB said a lot of things which never came to pass, also they were interested in group based activities being the norm, eg Explorers hiring wingmen etc to escort them etc, all pie in the sky.
Or it relate to the old method of exploration where Cmdrs scanned dark systems, maybe that would identify something as more and more Cmdrs filled in the gaps?
If that statement was accurate, it might tie in with the old PF/DW missions which did require you to be Elite, to get the permit for Shinrarta Dezhra, obviously Founders/backers got it too, but the original principle was it was gated access, so one could presume that’s what is meant here? If it’s accurate.
I don’t believe it’s context is accurate any more. The only thing that’s gated by Elite status are missions, again many of these were also made available to everyone. So if accurate, then what he was on about no long applies I presume.
I doubt Raxxla is ultimately Elite gated, because firstly there are so many players now hitting that rank very early, someone would have reported it by now and secondly it would mean FD has built some hidden mechanism, which is counterproductive, because if it only applies to 1 element, it’s a wasted resource, they would want us to find it.

The "dark systems" are basically any unpopulated anarchy systems with a few extra that are abandoned (or nearly so) for varying reasons. It may be helpful to visualize GalMap as follows: for the sake of simplicity in the past maps would often only show the populated systems (and those previously populated - yes that is a thing). Examples of previously populated are places like Jackson's Lighthouse, Placet, and HIP 15310 (if you haven't been this one is worth a trip - out over on western edges of the Bubble) There are also former mining systems which now sit almost completely abandoned. A great example of these is LHS 449. It currently has a population of 19,160 despite numerous huge stations and is now more a den of piracy. System description of LHS 449:
I believe in a prior game the system was listed as CPD-46 8664 but would have to consult some of the map tools players have made over the years. That said, I am certain the 2nd half is player-generated but the first sentence less so.
Regardless, the point is abandoned and dark have considerable gray areas. Another example of an "abandoned" station is Black Mausoleum in Beta Hydri which was left off the treaty per Wanted and Elite Encounters RPG. Does it look abandoned? Not exactly. Similarly, Ortiz Moreno City in Tau Ceti is the "destroyed" (and apparently subsequently repaired) station mentioned in the last paragraph of the Brewer Corporation codex entry. Language is social construct. The Federation may well consider LHS 449 for all practical purposes officially abandoned (it is technically still a Federal system). However, the reality is rarely that simple. Reality is rarely black or white. Learn to navigate the crossroads between no longer, now, and not yet.
Yes, the first line is one of a group whose names were changed by FD and that type of 'formally know as' text was added to a number systems as a kind of clarification, so that system would have been called CPD at sometime in Elite Dangerous
I'm not sure when and why they did this, but I'm sure others can tell..
I wouldn't add PF systems to my list of Abandoned. They have just been selected by players when applying for a faction.

I have no issue with Raxxla being Elite gated, i had a blast working towards my goal of triple Elite, the thing is that's easily obtainable by a solo commander, the point i would have an issue with is having to search in a group.
I take your point about the pre-launch stuff and lots of things change, im sure Fdev realise that Elite is now just as much of a single playr game as it is a multiplayer game.

If you want certainty, I am absolutely the wrong person to be speaking to regarding that. Reality is ugly. Humans on the whole don't follow logic and language reflects that. I merely am one ones who figures the ambiguity might actually be useful. Besides, the lore in Elite Dangerous is not the happy go-lucky type where everything is obvious and handed to you on a platter. This is kind of game where if you want treasure, you damn well need to put in the effort.

Gateway was Oltiqu. It is on a tourist beacon in the system. It may have also been referred to as Hope as the planet Hope is there. GalCop had a thing for references based on planets or stations.
Well, its kind of worse that that , in that the lore is muddied by player written content that is not curated or integrated with the body of lore that already existed. You see this in Galnets, for instance, many of which were player submissions.
Add that to the fact that the lore at launch was largely frozen, and then a whole new bunch of people picked up the story line with a new agenda, and cohesion is not to be expected.
All we can hope for in the context of this thread is that the lore and game mechanics at launch contained enough to expose the location of our target , and that subsequent changes have not obliterated information, or removed mechanics, or provided contradictory information. My confidence is not high that this is the case.
Add finally the current lore-master's comments that 'the payback for Raxxla would have to be pretty big' and read his face as he says it, and I'm in a mind to conclude either that:

- The whole concept of Raxxla has be re-worked to fit into the current narrative - in which case we're unlikely to see it or have any route to it until the whole Thargoid story is done or:
- Raxxla is something that they felt they couldn't do justice to and is in the 'too hard to fix' box.

-scrub that - found the ref - in my copy of the sheet it is TB0132 which is for Akwada (possibly my sheet is playing up..)
For my mind Galcop --> Alliance that the one is based on the ashes of the other, but thats just my speculation.

A reminder of how David Braben views Elite Dangerous per the Preface to Elite Dangerous RPG (there is lore and is awesome). Anyway, his views appear to be very close to that of a DM for TTRPGs that gained popularity in the 1980s. This is particularly noticable in the last half of the last paragraph which has the phrasing:
"Players have the ability to go unexpected directions and do unexpected things".
It may be useful to keep that in mind that he considers this as a digital live-action TTRPG of the modern era.
