Just saying...

Just took the time to map every underworld, otherworld, lost world or related entities that Wikipedia could point me towards.

Apart from a handful of them (Hel, Yama, Naraka, probably some others I forgot) they seem to form a half-sphere centered on Achenar. This brings me to two hypotheses:
  1. this is just Imperial theme naming and we're chasing a false track
  2. they point in the general direction of Raxxla... hopefully
k3IbehF.png
Outstanding, wonderful to see others mapping these to corroborate my own.

I believe certain systems in this area although relatively linked by an association with the theme of an underworld are in fact separate and represent certain themes which together paints a 3D story.

All of the systems with a Norse mythology link are in my opinion all part of the great ash tree Yggdrasil, and it is my assessment they collectively align along an axis with the heavens and hells.

There is a pantheon of greek gods (but suspiciously not all of them). Some these are relatively close to certain Norse systems, with a relative metaphorical shared theme (hell / harvest etc) but not all. But generally I believe they are in a specific tight alignment around the axis of Yggdrasil and represent the heavens.

In close proximity to similar Norse systems the Greek triad goddesses represent the cross roads, leading downwards to the axis based on the story of Persephone (which is very close to Axis Mundi).

From this area the underworld section directly below is made up of the main identifiers for the traditional Greek underworld.

Interspersed in this sector are other systems aligned with concepts attributed to - the cities of gold, sunken lands and mythical lands, which are as described in the Codex.

This is a direct replication of the Robert Holdstock book Lost Realms, which also describes the Greek underground and Yggdrasil all sharing a common link (this is a work of fiction) and it establishes Eden as another lost realm.

Around this sector I believe there are a variety of non pantheon gods, dispersed in a yet unknown pattern, and in the absence of any real logical link, except being random, are in my opinion potential Miltonian abstractions representing fallen archangels ergo demons, and I suspect but cannot confirm, only in tin foil, that they encircle the area or define it.

The reference by FD in their memorial is the first conformational link in my opinion, that Raxxla is the burning jewel of the codex, and the pendant jewel hanging from a golden chain ergo a Miltonian Eden.

Now in Milton’s Paradise Lost Eden hung from heaven, below it was hell. But the emphasis on a sector of lost realms indicates to me a reference to Holdstock, who himself attributes Eden as another lost realm!

Now Milton was very clear about this model universes dimensions giving the distance between heaven and Hellas ‘As far removed from god and light of heaven as far from the centre three times to the utmost pole’ JM.

So logically if you know what represents Hell and Heaven, and the axis in game you can calculate where Eden ought to be.

But only if Brookes followed the Miltonian model. The potential amalgamation of Holdstocks Lost Realms puts potential shade on such a theory because it shifts Eden into what is in game the underworld!

This is a work in progress but I believe this abstract 3D structure is Michael Brookes physical template for his ‘the space in between’ unwritten book, and in my opinion it’s an archeological remnant of his Raxxla narrative.

I believe Raxxla is, or something leading to it is within this ‘Lost Realms’ area. And is a Miltonian abstraction of the Paradise Lost’s Eden.

Achenar marked the end if the river Eridanus, the river of the Underworld

Nothing about rivers in the codex is there?
Also, fitting the theme, the brightest star in the Eridanus constellation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achernar
(spelling being different because the IAU only officialized it in 2016)

...there's also a close star with the same etymology, Acamar, which was the original "end of the river" as ancient Greeks could not see the former. Hmmmm.

Famous anarchies from the lore:

Elite:
Onisou (insufficient info to locate)
Xeesenri insufficient info to locate)

Frontier:
  • Bedaho (Astrogator/Saud Kruger/Narwhal/Brenquith/Gold skins)
  • Phekda (likely settled too late but very resource rich, home to Ancients of Mumu)
  • Zelada (aka Veliaze)

First Encounters:
  • Acksoex (aka Bedaho due to planet Home)
  • Ackwada (Brenquith)
  • Arexack (due to long-standing religious war)
Zelada and Veliaze are to separate anarchies, in Frontier and First encounters. They aren't particularly close.

Acksoex and Bedaho are also separate systems. Bedaho is a democracy.

Ackwada and Arexack are corporate state in Frontier.

They should have, but I suspect The Club storyline was dropped.
The Club isn't a story line as much as a tool for FD to justify changes in the game. As long as nothing happens, they are dormant.

Drew clearly said that the Club was made up by FD, not him. There is no reason to drop them. They may become useful at some point.

Shibboleths my dears. Shibboleths will get you every single time.

The Federation had their ass handed to them by pirates in Veliaze, Amiay, and Ququve. As a consequence the renamed a system to save face from an entire battle group burning. That tale is recounted in Zelada. Nevermind the losses continue further out towards Oltiqu (now known as Gateway) where Federal officials sided with the locals handing the rebellious Frontier worlds a victory that would be made worse at Alioth. Quphieth and Alioth are the same system in Frontier but told from an Imperial and then Federal perspective (there is but one Donaldson starport).

There is but one Home planet in all of Elite. Planets didn't change names even when the powers the control the system did change. From the First Encounters journal:

ANARCHY HITS HAMMER’S FIST

J.J.

From Hammer’s Fist, Home, Acksoex, Lemuel M’Bono sends this report:

“Today the ‘Home’s Hepplewhite, home to a hundred and thirty hard-core journalists, was under siege when hosts of Imperial reporters, backed by recidivists from the local community delivered a barrage of missiles and insults at the hotel. Barricading ourselves inside, we returned fire and the situation might have deteriorated had not a courageous group of Frontier correspondents armed with ‘Sudorjuice Cocktails’ launched a rear attack on our aggressors from Mrs Doom-Parker’s Boarding House.”

The assault was eventually quelled by the newly-formed ‘Home Police Department’ (HPD), an ad hoc organisation composed of members of the Hammer’s Fist citizenry who have declared their intention of reimposing order on the settlement. Incensed by reports that the Emperor, Hengist Duval is dispatching a Naval war fleet to ‘protect’ his literary hacks, we are now petitioning the Federal Government to retaliate appropriately so that our faithful and hard-working employees in Acksoex may enjoy the protection they so richly deserve.

Ackwada: Please consult your history books and tourist beacons. Ackwada was retaken by the Imperials after a particularly ugly episode involving Rockforth Legal Academy. To quote the First Encounters journals:

ANARCHY REIGNS - GUN LAW ON ACKWADA

M.C.S

The results of anarchy are well demonstrated by this month’s destruction of the so-called ‘Legal Academy’ on Thompson’s Planet, Ackwada. Even in the Independent Systems, they make an attempt at a legislature and the Academy was designed to cover the illicit dealings of their controllers, the Rockforth Company.

Now the results of decades of corruption have finally borne fruit and those who set the wheels in motion are dead; dust and water vapour. Nothing more. In a System where lawlessness prevails, someone with more money and a grudge paid a squadron of fighter-bombers to attack and destroy the base and everything around it. With a disregard for human life that is the hallmark of the Independents, they fired dozens of missiles at point blank range in broad daylight, removing the Academy and all those in it from existence.

The only benefit to come from this monstrous act of murder and mayhem is that our sister journal, the Frontier News is, thankfully, saved from the threat of closure as the remaining Board Members of the Rockforth Company have dropped all legal cases in the absence of their lawyers and advisors.

We repeat the Empire’s offer to all those who would prefer to live under stable rule to defect whenever the opportunity arises.

You are free to enter any one of our worlds where the local Imperial Guard will ensure that its Hospitality Suite is at your disposal.

Arexack: The Church of Kumbyar has entered the chat. If you would like to debate them by all means. That has only been one of the bloodier conflicts in the Elite Universe.

I'd like to point out further that one of the founders of the Alliance, Meredith Argent, has a family originally from the Federation - her father being a Federal industrial magnate. Ayethi, too, has embraced the warm hold of Empire.

Language, coordinate systems, and history can mislead depending on who was telling the tale. Reality, on the other hand, does not have to give a damn about a particular group's feelings. You want the warm and fuzzies, go with fantasy.

To quote the Alliance on the Empire from the Codex:

"The common belief is the Federation will always pretend to be something it is not. At least with the Empire, you know what you are dealing with."

The Imperials may be snobbish and stubborn but at least they are good at it.

The Club isn't a story line as much as a tool for FD to justify changes in the game. As long as nothing happens, they are dormant.
....

Well, that was a rather creative attempt at dodging reality. Good luck with that. May the odds forever be in your favor.
They should have, but I suspect The Club storyline was dropped.
The delusion is strong with this one.

Care to explain The Colonia Bridge? Project Dynasty seems to be alive and well. I'd also like to point out the Club wanted to consolidate power under the Empire. Who built a number of those Ocellus stations despite it being a supposedly Brewer Corporation initiative? Also, who built the first Coriolis? Jaques in Vetitice/Facece. Lave's Coriolis was the first of the much larger ones. But, yes, the Club is dead and we have absolutely nothing to fear. We can also all just ignore that agreement between President Tyrell Biggs and Emperor Hengist Duval in 3008.

Hello cmdrs,
I've been interested in Soontill and Raxxla lately and I've already learned a lot, but being a little lazy, especially for reading 1559 pages of thread, could someone tell me what tracks you're currently on and what are they (generally) the ones you have already studied? I also have another question, concerning the relationship between Raxxla and Astrophil and Stella because, not being English, it is complicated for me to read these poems completely ?

Those news articles are not history. They are just reactions to the player in FFE doing certain missions. If you drop the mission, they never pop up. The Journal extracts are taken from the code of FFE and contain all the possible news articles.
If you do the missions, systems don't change government type. Even if some journalist writes that anarchy reigns.

If you play FFE you see that what the journalists write, is usually quite far from what really happened. The journals are sort of a parody on the British news papers, from the 90's. A little bit informative, but mostly just funny.

Strongest indication for the existence of Raxxla so far is Drew's blog entry[7] the inclusion of Raxxla in the Codex.
I'd actually like to clarify on this particular point: a claim is just a claim until it has a factual basis. There is nothing in the Raxxla codex that really moves it past a myth. This is all the more true when the organization making the claims may not have the best of track records regarding truthfulness.

Where the validation of Raxxla being real first comes into play is the existence of Sol and Earth. Raxxla myth depends upon Earth at a very fundamental level. Raxxla depends on the Oisir-Raxxlans misbuilding the Talmor Lens at Earth. Only with a unified universe can Raxxla exist. This is partly why The Dark Wheel novella has numerous references to Earth, fuel scoops, and Hydrogen.

To be clear, Earth is just where humanity bumps into the alien technology that made Raxxla possible. Earth is not Raxxla itself. Earth, however, is deeply important to Raxxla being more than a myth. The other key piece is Lavian Brandy. This is because it is brewed in oak barrels imported directly from Earth per the in-game description and advertisements.

Additionally, the Earth connection implies Raxxla or something based off the alien technology found at Earth and Mars was known by even the first waves of colonists. Granted, not all of humanity may have known (the nature of the Martian Relic is still a secret even in 3309) but some people very much knew something was out there before we even left Sol.

Find the pirates that stole the Tesla and Starman and you probably have the group that knows about Raxxla. If I was guessing, a station near a planet named New America would be a good starting point. I'd start with Zeessze and Facece. Though, I seem to remember bumping into another New America somewhere else so checking GalMap may be in order.

On that note, The Pilot's Federation knows more than they say:

This is damned close to Starman's suit.

I don’t think there are many here that doesn’t think Raxxla exist as a lore element. The question is more if we can trust that it’s implemented in the game.
All the things you list above would be the same for Frontier and First encounters as well. Those games did not have Raxxla implemented.

I also doubt that FD has used anything from Alien world. That book is still under copyright. They would probably have to pay and credit Holdstocks family, for that to work.

I am 99.99% sure Braben and Bell personally commissioned the Steven Eisler books and every single one of the ones done jointly between Holdstock and Malcolm Edwards. There is too much emphasis on Earth all prior games, The Dark Wheel novella, the official novels, and said series of books released before the release of the first game.

Lakon Spaceways is and always will be from Sol. The Type-6 Transporter is proof of that. Nevermind, all the lore connected to Faulcon Manspace and Faulcon-Delacy in this game and all prior games. Additionally, Saud Kruger is in the book "Tour of the Universe". Saud Kruger is likely nearly as ancient as both Lakon Spaceways (previously known as Laker Spaceways) and Sirius Corporation.

Sol has forever been a part of the lore.

Raxxla is mentioned in the TDW novella.

Also, a reminder that Galaxy 1 contains Lave and Vetitice (later renamed Facece) but had Sol edited off the maps.

A reminder about the Old Worlds Coalition: the Morten-Marte incident is canonical. Which also means the Empire has forever been part of the lore even in the first game.

The first game happens in the same Universe as Earth and Achenar. Universal Cartographics is part of the Club conspiracy to bury the past.

NOTE- this is a General Comment, not aimed at anyone specific!

Either you believe Raxxla is in-game or you don’t. If you don’t then you must believe Michael Brooks and David Braben are liars and untrustworthy, since they’ve both said on multiple occasions it is in-game. We have also been told:
(MB) “It’s something in the game world (not text) and very hard to find”, “It’s not a random thing”, “Anyone can find it, and more than once”

(Allen Stroud or Drew Wagar) “it is a topic within the Alien lore book”

If you don’t trust the CEO and original Executive Director of a game then why are you playing it and why are you trolling this thread.
Note-this is a rhetorical question! I dont want any responses to this post. If you are such a troll I dont want to hear from you, I would report you to FD for trolling and permanently block you. By definition anyone posting on this thread believes in the existence of Raxxla and is interested in solving the puzzle of what and where it is. Because I dont think it will be anything like the description in Holdstock’s novella. As Han_Zen has pointed out above that would be subject to Intellectual Property Rights issues.

Rant over-I’m in a bad mood...today Ive vacuumed and shampood all the carpets in the house and have just finished cutting the lawn, narrowly avoiding skewering myself since I accidentally mowed a green plastic covered metal plant support lying in the long grass, which is now in multiple (sharp!) pieces...I suspect copawlot or visiting fox of trying to get rid of me!

It has become clear to me over the last month or so, since @Rochester pointed out the existence of the Underworld from classical mythologies and the leads to it from the Codex, how much obfuscation Michael Brookes has put into this puzzle, he clearly put a lot of effort into it. It has brought home to me what a genius he was! He was a master of saying something that meant nothing or everything, which is actually a very difficult thing to do! (Just watch any TV drama involving witness interviews). I suspect IRL he had an impish mischievous sense of humour & I wish I’d had the chance to meet him.

I think I see a reason why those early E/F missions were deleted. I suspect they were his first design of the puzzle and he decided to reinvent the clues to be more polished and make the journey more obvious and more interesting to those with an understanding of mythology. I suspect his unwritten book was also obfuscation.

Right, now for a beer!!
Who ate all the salted cashews???
