What's the Brand New Feature for ED in 2024?

I saw mention of this the other day and thought base building may already be going through stress testing via carriers. i.e. how many can a celestial body handle, how many can a system handle, etc. If they ever get that far, there will be a maximum, per whatever, associated. I hope there are enough that delivering stuff using an SRV becomes possible, but not so many that every place you look, there's a base. One of the only annoying things I find with Starfield is every place I've chosen to land on any planet, within a few hundred meters, there's a base. Interesting for the first few places, but then impossible and ridiculous each place. (I certainly haven't been everywhere yet though)

Starfield has small maps (tiny areas on a planet) with generated points of interest. Some mods can increase or decrease the POI density. On January 10, 2023, only 0.059% of the galaxy has been discovered. Given the modest number of active players there will never be too many bases. They could limit the bases per planet and star system. A cluster of cooperating or competing player bases would generate cool emergent gameplay.

On June 2, 2016 I posted a ground base industry concept by ToCoSo.

Allowing groups of players to dominate systems and areas with bases and points of control, sounds like that other game, what was it called again? Oh yes, EvE Online! The gameplay that generates is that every player not with us gets destroyed, so no thanks, don't want to be scared to travel to certain areas of the bubble in Open because there's an enemy player blockade, next thing you know there will be demands for the game to be Open only to stop players getting around the blockade in solo....oh wait, there already is!

Oh yes and another reminder that Starfield is a "single player" game and comparing things in Starfield to thinks in ED and wanting them to be the same doesn't make sense at all!

ED won't become EVE for multiple reasons:

  1. EVE has just 7800+ star systems with 4 security classes. EVE's Concord (NPC faction) increases safety in high sec systems by punishing players who do crimes. EVE has more concurrent players than ED (currently online 17,588, max 29,299 (2024-02-08) in a relatively smaller sandbox. ED has around 400 billion systems and 10 times less concurrent players which are sparsely, spread out in the Milky Way. The chance of player encounters is tremendously low.
  2. EVE has jump gates which are chokepoints for ships entering a system. In ED players can jump to another system from nearly any point in space. So players who dislike Powerplay can't be barred. System permits are set by the devs.
  3. EVE has only one game mode: open MMO. The corps (guilds) can claim Null sec systems (0.0) while players are safer in high sec. If you're in Null sec and encounter other players there's potential for PVE or PVP. In ED players can switch to solo mode (single player) to circumvent aforementioned interaction.
  4. If base building is added to ED, 1 base would cover a fraction of a planet. Most of the planet remains free to explore. The bases could contribute to the sphere of influence of major and minor factions. As a result the Bubble expands and changes. ED has too few concurrent players to effectively patrol a handful of star systems.
  5. In January 3308 (2022), players explored a total of 222,083,678 systems which is merely 0.05% of the Milky Way. There hasn't been anyone in 99% of the galaxy. If you put EVE in ED it would cover less than 0.000001%.

TLDR: base building + powerplay 2.0 wouldn't prevent players who abhor PP from doing their usual activities.

One step at a time! It wouldn't be the one time that it has been suggested that PvP and other game activities that rely on it be given a selected small area to take part in, one step at a time!

I'm hoping that we get the precursor of base building.

Namely, taking a ticket and waiting in line to deal with the space council's planning department. Just don't forget to take the architect's drawings, unlike last time.

Can you feel the immersion oozing....
The trick is to buy a plot where someone else has already done all the planning and permits and given up before actually building anything. Then you can fast-track it through the local council and architectural bureau. The hardest part would be finding a contractor who doesn't screw things up too much and getting through all the audits and final paperworks.

🙃😛

I was 100% suggesting/hoping it not be like Starfield since the number of POI's, bases, etc, to me, is too high.

Technically it already exist in some systems, but never heard about KoS any players outside some factions.

Usually it was about hunting people, which arrived at bounty board, connected with drop in security/eco/inf/all 3, tho.

And I fully understand and respect that. If people mess with player factions (which is very long term goal, some bgs squadrons are as old as bgs), by doing their grindground in systems hunting them isn't wrong.

It is very problematic especially for players supporting anarchists.

My guess for a new feature would be some sort of automated system that'll end up eventually replacing the manual Community Goals.
Powerplay v2 and the Thargoid war content between them should already cover that in the basic sense of "generate an indefinite number of hauling and combat activities with progress bars that result in an in-game effect", and in a mechanical sense do it better than CGs by allowing multiple activities to contribute at various weightings.

But then that was also true of Powerplay v1. I suspect replacing CGs is probably impossible because it's not the mechanical aspect of them which people are interested in.

This thread is the perfect recipe for for setting oneself up utter disappointment (and bitterness towards FDev) when the new feature will be actually announced (if not postponed)
But what's new? 😇😂
True, but on the other hand, Frontier choosing to be "mysterious" instead of setting expectations isn't new either.

To be fair, that new feature isn't due next update and according to Arf we will get more details on the PP rework before its release.

Off topic: one of the main complaints about Starfield with non-space nerd gamers is that the planets are empty with not enough POI-s. Goes to show how making a realistic-scale space game is really hard and never going to fill the expectations of everyone. For the record, I agree with your opinion that there needs to be empty space in a space game or it just breaks my suspense of disbelief.

Sure - but when they "set expectations" of Beyond 3.3 including an ice planet rework and Squadron Carriers that didn't go so well for them either.
Mentioning the Powerplay rewrite (as "feature overhaul") in mid-2022 rather than now, when it's (hopefully!) mostly ready, again, doesn't really seem to have helped.

"A new feature, hopefully this year" is probably about as specific as they can get without too much risk of it being wrong in a way which will annoy people later.

That's true.

But given the circumstances, I don't see why people who speculate on a discussion forum deserve the constant ridicule.

It wont be base building especially in a shared environment, that would be a complete and utter disaster.

True - maybe meeting minutes, employee expenses, accident logs, job applications, payroll information, tax records and visitor registers will get some use in the new "ED: Accountants" expansion, where Frontier are excited to bring the thrills of VAT returns, employment tribunals and safety inspections to a mainstream computer game for the first time.
Don't forget Cat Media! So clearly the new feature is creating cat memes to vandalise stations with!

But seriously, from the list in the OP, none of the above. If it's something so fantastical, I already have my doubts that it will be effective.

It would be in FD's interest to piggyback the new feature off extant content that is otherwise under-exploited.
