What's the Brand New Feature for ED in 2024?

Had an idea while observing, why not have the ability to board capital ships, like the ones that appear in conflict zones. Would quite enjoy sneaking onto them to do missions and cleaning them 😉 I mean have you seen the state of federal stations. I know I know they can't help it there only feds but standards guys. At least boarding an imperial ship you know it would be pristine, organised and well layed out plus you wouldn't catch anything 😁
Cleaning them....You do realise these things are roughly 2km long ? And probably have an entire army on board ?

Especially since anyone doing "data-mining" to determine that "base building functionality" is in the game is skipping over the more obvious (and rather less risky to one's account!) method:
1) go to an Odyssey base
2) look at the buildings

Didn't someone data mine a Panther Clipper once, oh and a Thargoid. One of the problems with data mining is that FDEV can include features for testing purposes in the game code base, rather than maintaining a completely separate game code base just for testing, makes it easier. However some things when tested don't work out how they are expected and get dropped. So maybe there was stuff for base building and they were using this data for testing on a test server, but that's no guarantee it will actually be implemented if they find it causes to many problems.

I still reckon it's thicker atmosphere with weather and water, that qualifies as new features right?

an extra 2% on jump drives.1% on hyper drives, -50% on ground & ship combat zones, no changes on PP, and A 50% increase on arxc for all items on the store

Fdev will add a brand-new feature to the core gameplay of ED. The tentative release date is end of 2024.

What could it be? Such as:
  1. Ship interiors
  2. Base building, mining resources
  3. Station management
  4. New planet types and biomes
  5. EVA outside a ship in space
  6. Deep NPC interaction with AI voices
  7. On foot VR mode
  8. Procedural cities on planets
  9. Guild system for player groups
  10. Hunt procedural alien wildlife
  11. Something else
Mm maybe we get gas giant mining get a special ship that allows you to get close to the gas to mine out of the planet

Water, well liquids would definitely qualify as a new feature.

I am quite confident that it will be base building. There is a lot of info out there that kinda prooves this. Yet there is still the possibility for it to be something different, which would also be cool.

However... man, a modular base on a planet of my choosing with production facilites for engineering mats would be absolutely amazing...

Would you, say, be willing to eat a sock if you're wrong?

When they say "This will be an exciting new addition to the core gameplay" makes me think it will be an activity rather than assets, but of course new activities can be tied to new assets.

What I would want :-
  1. On Foot VR with appropriate gestures and interaction.
  2. Ship Interiors. I'd be happy with only able to walk around your ship while docked, landed or even around crashed ships.
  3. Settlement Building / Management.
What I'm expecting :-
  1. Settlement Building / Management.
  2. Ship Interiors, probably only on crashed ships though.
  3. Maybe a new planetary type to land on.

Just had a thought, which is kind of scary on its own...

New feature, which would kind of include ship interiors, would have to do with all those pre-FSD exploration and colony shiups tha twent out into space and disappeared over the years. I think it would be a lot of fun to go exploring near and far space looking for all of those lost generations. We have enough of the galaxy that hasn't been disexplored yet, that it shouldn't be too much of a problem to 'plant' the ships around without causing rework of existing planets and systems.

Mechanics of the move would be locating and exploring the ships when found. Where did the crews go? Is the ship floating in space? Good time for a boarding mission (ship interiors at least for colony and megaships). Are there possibly hidden colonies out there somewhere, where a dmaaged colony ship went down and several generations of survivors have managed to eke out an existence?

Would you get salvage rights for discovered 'lost' ships? Go eva to cut your way into a derelict in space.

I see limitless possibilities here, and it would definitley make exploration more interesting.

That's presumably where they're going with Powerplay 2.0 - I wouldn't expect it to be a direct replacement for PMFs (or even necessarily interact with the Political BGS much at all), but that didn't feel like the direction they were indicating with that announcement either.

Obviously "meaningful" will be very subject to taste and player opinions vary substantially on whether (other) players should be able to make noticeable changes to the game world.
Good catch by @Lex Rottie originally, and it also makes me wonder if Frontier might tie squadrons in closer with Powerplay. But well, they'd have to tread extra carefully there. (In a general sense, reworking anything that involves competitive multiplayer is already treading on eggshells.)

Are Frontier cynical enough to start a rumour about a new feature when even they don't yet know what it will be, and then see where our speculation goes?
It's a bit too late for that, as by now they should have a general plan at the very least(!) if they want to release by the end of the year. In the meantime, giving players some things to speculate on is still giving them something to engage with, or rather, in.

Of course, an entirely new feature's release could easily end up being delayed to 2025, citing more time needed to polish and so on, and keeping Q3/Q4 of this year with content updates only. As long as those include new ships, I don't think many would complain.

In doing my rounds of exploration for the past month or two, I noticed a lot of planets that have thicker atmospheres we cannot land on still list resources that we should be able to collect.

That just convinces me that they always intended to get cigar atmospheres in there. Hopefully now they will have more time or resources to do that. Maybe they will include some creatures that might want to invite you for lunch.

Essentially, I'm still hoping for gas giants you can dive into and mine stuff while trying to avoid being eaten by space whales.

Hula girl bobblehead would be nice too. 👍
