The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Zombaland (Triple Eight Championship, Race 5)

It's another bright new day on Zomba A 1 A and time for a review of the latest submissions.

In regulation ..

.. Inga Stevenson continues with the exotic anti-zombuur weaponry, bringing a necrotic-flesh targeting nanobot swarm (not to be confused with the necrotic flesh-targeting variety ... yes, I had to double take on that as well) on the Ship of Theseus to land in 7th place, significantly less than a minute behind the Sag Wagon! Further up the board and Kevin The Stabber (and if anyone here is well suited to the task at hand, surely it's Kev?) brings a simple Jack Knife to the party and puts in a fantastic run, landing gently at the finish to take 3rd place, again, really not very far at all behind Epaphus! (just sayin' neither of you should be feeling comfortable). I may have to call on a mechanic soon to see if I can do something about the seconds dial of the leaderboard display which seems to be playing up again!

Hmmm, just did some "research" and not only is this also a "jack knife" but the guy doing it is called Kevin? Now I'm wondering if I've misinterpreted Stabber's weapon choice. 🤔

Anyhoo ... over in the unlimited class and things are now looking like this:

Just a single new entry from Tobias Von Brandt who's impaling the (hopefully slow moving zombuurs) on his (annoyingly) slow moving landing gear!

One of a number of racers whose attempts to return to their ship after the Pippin Beacon SRV section were foiled by a lack of headroom meaning they had to abandon the SRV and run back to the ship on foot instead. In related news, I gather Zorgon Peterson have a new ship coming soon which, at least on paper, looks like it ought to have this ground clearance issue solved!

Good luck out there people, flay fast!

OK I think I am going to take the hint and abandon the racing for the day. I had two "too fast for orbital cruise" dropping in at Pippin today, and then on the one I did make it through I was halfway towards the relay in the SRV and suddenly the marker shot 7Km up into the air

No amount of selecting/deselecting would work and I couldn't see it easily when I got to the centre, so the game has beaten me today.

You can select the Comms Power Grid instead if that happens.
But at least you've figured out why the distance won't change. Sneaky ZomBuurs hiding 7km in the air.
If you run into the problem where the SRV distance to Pippin Beacon doesn't change (I've only seen this once) then I'll also accept targeting the Comms Power Grid which is right next to it.

Ah thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't checked before going cause it had not been an issue before, thought I might be able to recognise it from memory, but it was night :D Now I know.

Buur must have pulled the release cord on his ejector seat when he heard I was coming. I'll remember to turn off the lights next time!

It's been pretty quiet in Zombaland the last 24hrs (if you ignore the distant sounds of psykit swearing). No change in regulation, however I have now managed to fix the problems with the seconds display so let's take a fresh look at that leaderboard:

OK, now let's turn to unlimited class where we have two new entries.

First up is Martinjameson flying the quite popular Sidewinder and going mediaeval on the zombuurs with a mace. A decent run considering the SRV had to be abandoned and just 34 seconds behind Inga Stevenson to end up in 9th place. Meanwhile Tobias shaves a minute off his time, dispatching zombuurs by consults notes "SCO into the sun". That moves him up into 5th place now! A Gentle Lander bonus and that would be on the podium ... just saying! ;)

We're now rapidly heading into the weekend. I'll probably do a penultimate leaderboard update tomorrow afternoon and then leave everyone in the dark until the final times are revealed sometime mid afternoon (UK time) on Monday.

I've added a 2nd circle (in red) to my earlier image showing exactly where that Comms Power Grid is located in the eventuality that the main Pippin Beacon targeting is off.

Thanks, hopefully I won't need it tonight. It didn't help that I ended up approaching from a completely different side to how I have every other time too, so I was already thrown off.

I've tried two more runs today, I completed both of them, but I also messed up in both of them. The last run was going to be much faster, but the last stop I landed, then hit launch, then realised I needed to go to the terminal 😩 lost about 30 seconds waiting to be able to request docking clearance again (wasn't going to risk just plonking down so close and getting blown up).
Then coming into the finish and I got stuck in the toast rack and lost another bunch of time. So as it turns out both of the runs were slower. Still I take solace from the face that all 3 of the SRV sections were within 4 seconds of each other.

I'm pretty sure you don't.

I have decided the game hates me :D

Tried 6 runs today, only finished one and it was slower. I had lots of too fast for orbital cruise, and one 'Dropping - Too Close' where the game decided that the planet I'd been landing on all morning wasn't actually landable.

wanders off grumbling
